The Assistant Dean of Admission plays a critical leadership role within the Admission team by managing recruitment strategies, overseeing key initiatives, and directly contributing to the college's enrollment goals. This position includes extensive territory management, team leadership, and strategic planning, as well as cultivating relationships with prospective students, families, counselors, and community partners to promote Gustavus Adolphus College's mission and offerings. $48,000-58,000 annuallyMain ResponsibilitiesStrategic Recruitment and Territory ManagementDevelop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive recruitment strategies for assigned territories to meet institutional enrollment goals. Represent Gustavus at high schools, college fairs, community events, and forums through public presentations and one-on-one interactions. Build and maintain strong relationships with school counselors, community organizations, and other influential partners to expand the college’s reputation and student pipeline. Plan and execute events for key influencers, such as school counselors, community-based organization leaders, and alumni, both on-campus and in key recruitment markets.
Prospective Student EngagementEngage with a wide range of prospective students and families, including those from underrepresented, first-generation, and rural communities, to promote access and belonging. In addition to first-year student recruitment, oversee and manage the following programs: transfer, graduate, and tuition benefit, guiding students and families through complex admission pathways, including financial aid and credit transfer assessmentConduct admission conversations with prospective students (on-campus, off-campus, and virtual) and provide timely follow-up with students, families, and counselors. Present Gustavus, including the admission and financial aid processes, at campus events, information sessions, and virtual platforms.
Serve as a primary point of contact for families navigating the admission process, including detailed communication about financial aid decisions. Collaborate with the Visit/Events team to enhance the campus visit experience and increase engagement at signature events such as Fall Visit Days, Minnesota Private College Week, and Meet Gustavus. Assist in continual growth and development of primary and secondary markets. Admission Leadership and Team DevelopmentProvide mentorship, guidance, and training for admission counselors and student workers to ensure professional growth and success.
Assist in onboarding new staff members and conducting ongoing professional development programs, including systems use and recruitment best practices. Lead or contribute to special projects that advance the effectiveness and efficiency of the admission team. Application Review and Decision-MakingOversee the application review process for assigned territories, ensuring fair, thorough, and efficient evaluations. Ensure holistic and equitable application review practices that align with the College’s commitment to community and belonging. Render admission decisions in collaboration with the Dean of Admission and VP of Enrollment Management. Interview and evaluate students appealing their admission decisions, providing thoughtful recommendations to leadership.
Institutional Collaboration and RepresentationServe as a liaison between the Admission Office and internal campus partners, contributing to campus committees and initiatives that align with institutional priorities. Collaborate with colleagues across campus to align admission strategies with institutional goals, connecting prospective students with campus partners to ensure students feel aligned with what the college offers inside and outside of the classroom. Represent Gustavus at professional conferences (e. g. , MACAC, NACAC) and stay current with trends and best practices in college admissions. Data Management and Strategic PlanningAnalyze recruitment and enrollment data to inform territory strategies, team priorities, and decision-making processes.
Ensure accurate record-keeping of recruitment interactions, application decisions, and key performance indicators. Use data and student feedback to assess and improve outreach, visit experiences, and application yield strategies. Campus EngagementActively participate in campus life by attending and supporting events such as concerts, plays, athletic competitions, chapel services, and other college programs. All other duties as assigned. PrerequisitesMinimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree. Minimum of 3 years of experience in college admissions or a related field, preferably at a liberal arts institution. Proven ability to collaboratively develop and execute strategic recruitment plans. Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze data and manage multiple priorities. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Willingness and ability for travel and evening/weekend work. Proficiency with admission CRM systems (e. g. , Slate) and Google Workspace. Ability to travel in-state and out of state, along with evening and weekend hours required for special events and enrollment activities. Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree. Experience with financial aid processes and communicating financial aid decisions to families. Familiarity with the liberal arts college environment.
Demonstrated success in building relationships with school counselors, alumni, and community partners. Experience managing recruitment initiatives for graduate, transfer, or first-generation students.
