We’re looking for an exceptional leader to take on the pivotal role of Area Operations Manager (AOM) for Auckland – a senior leadership position within Hato Hone St John’s Auckland District Leadership team. As a member of the District Leadership Team, the AOM is responsible for providing strategic oversight, operational leadership, and managing key internal and external relationships. You'll lead a team of people leaders, driving operational performance and ensuring excellence in the delivery of emergency ambulance services in alignment with our National Ambulance Strategy.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact in emergency ambulance services across Tāmaki Makaurau. Key responsibilities: Working as part of a very dynamic team of Senior District Operational Managers, reporting to the Auckland District Operations Manager. Selecting and developing leadership capability in Watch Operations Managers to enable their success as leaders of others. Providing direct leadership and support to Watch Operations Managers through mentoring, performance planning, regular 1: 1 reviews, and ongoing feedback. Coaching and role-modelling positive leadership, teamwork, and collaboration across the district.
Supporting, motivating, and influencing both direct and indirect reports to ensure the delivery of effective and efficient Emergency Ambulance Services (EAS) that meet contractual obligations and drive continuous improvement. Working in partnership with Kāhui Mauaka (Māori Responsiveness Team) to embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles (partnership, active protection, tino rangatiratanga, mana motuhake, options and equity) into district strategies and plans. Supporting the development of cultural competency across your teams. QualificationsKo wai koe - About you: To be successful in this role, you will bring:
A strong track record in managing complex operations and driving positive change, with experience in an emergency services environment. Proven experience leading leaders and creating high-performing teams. Strong tactical and operational leadership skills, with the ability to respond to dynamic situations and support day-to-day decision-making under pressure. An authentic, collaborative leadership style and ability to build trusted relationships across a wide range of stakeholders (including hospitals, police, fire, and defence). A strategic mindset, with a focus on improving patient outcomes and addressing health inequities in Aotearoa with an emphasis on improving Māori health equity.
Flexibility and confidence managing a diverse, dynamic workforce, including volunteers.
