If the land is well, if the sea is well, the people will thrive.   Te āheinga / The opportunityJoin us in shaping the future of water management as a Hydrology Monitoring Officer with Northland Regional Council. This role is full-time, fixed term commencing January 2026 through to early December 2026, covering a period of parental leave. In this dynamic and hands-on role, you’ll be at the forefront of hydrology field operations—collecting and processing rainfall, groundwater, river level, and flow data to national standards.You’ll be responsible for servicing and maintaining hydrological infrastructure and data collection systems, from rainfall sensors and water level recorders to telemetry and flow gauging equipment. Your fieldwork will span the Northland region, involving river flow gauging, flood monitoring, and low-flow assessments—even during extreme weather events. You’ll also assist with groundwater investigations, including water quality sampling and pump tests, helping to build a clearer picture of our region’s water resources.Precision and quality are at the heart of this role. You’ll process hydrological data to meet National Environmental Standards, uphold rigorous quality control protocols, and interpret data within your area of expertise. If you're passionate about environmental science, thrive in the outdoors, and want to make a tangible impact on Northland’s water future, we’d love to hear from you.He Kōrero Mōu / About YouTo thrive in this role, you'll bring a tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as science, hydrology, or environmental monitoring, along with over five years of hands-on experience in hydrology. In addition you will bring the following:Strong background in hydrological data collection, flow gauging, and the installation and maintenance of hydrometric stations and equipment.Confident using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and have a Familiarity with time series software like Hilltop and telemetry systems such as Hydrotel is a plus, as is experience processing hydrological data to meet National Environmental Standards.Skilled in analyzing data to identify trends and extremes, and adept at communicating your findings through clear reports and presentations.Experience in local government would be an advantage.Ability to build positive, productive relationships with ease and communicate professionally and clearly with a range of stakeholders.Full driver’s licenceWe understand that sometimes the right person doesn't ‘tick all the boxes'.
