Job Description

The role of Director of Sustainability and Conservation will lead the sustainability strategy and initiatives of Six Senses Laamu, and oversee the impact of the resort’s marine conservation team, Maldives Underwater Initiative. This will involve maintaining Six Senses Laamu’s partnerships with national and international organizations, develop and implement the marine conservation strategyThe Director of Sustainability and Conservation will be responsible for assuring all resort activities align with Six Senses guidelines and values regarding nature preservation and regenerative impact, and will involve liaising with other departments, stakeholders, local authorities, and tourism operators.

The Director of Sustainability and Conservation will work with our extended network of scientific advisors from international universities and local partners to provide evidence-based management decisions in addition to the preservation and sustainable use of the natural environment. The role will be directly responsible for managing a team of 10+ staff covering the resort’s sustainability initiatives, community engagement and marine research and conservation.

The ideal candidate has a good knowledge of sustainability in a hospitality context and tropical ecosystems, experience in effective workplan and project management, and is able to collaborate with outside organizations, plan and achieve long-term, ambitious sustainability and conservation goals. Duties And ResponsibilitiesAs Director of Sustainability and Conservation, I will assume full responsibility for the efficient operation of the Sustainability function to provide ongoing compliance with Sustainability Guidelines and execution of the approved resort-specific Sustainability Action Plan.

I will be responsible for results in Sustainability and coordinate all Sustainability programs as well as the related training together with Human Resources and the respective departments. The duties and responsibilities will include: Ensure that each Sustainability initiative, be it for host or guest, reaches its fullest potential. Safeguard the pillar of Sustainability and make sure that all these brand initiatives are fully embraced, adopted and implemented within the hotel.

Manage the Sustainability Fund on a monthly basis and ensure the funds are collected and distributed in an effective and transparent manner, documenting the projects and initiatives the fund supports. Develop and maintain relationships with sustainability-related partners, key community organizations and representatives such as schools, special interest groups, local government departments and tourism associations and enhance existing or add new partnerships if applicable. Serve as chief ESG data collector, coordinator, and record keeper in conjunction with relevant departments for reporting into the Greenview Hotel and Green Engage platforms.

Effectively manage Sustainability KPIs (SPIs) reporting, goal setting, and data collection and serve as the lead consultant for cross-departmental solutions. Organize and support research and feasibility studies surrounding areas for possible sustainability interventions, such as pest control, renewable energies, and responsible waste management. Engage with the local community on a regular basis to ensure the property is an active and supportive member through Sustainability Fund projects and sustainability-related activities. Develop and lead sustainable staff events on a monthly basis that are engaging and supportive of a culture of sustainability among the team.

Connect the hotel with globally recognized sustainability events, initiatives, and ‘citizen science’, such as Earth Day, World Ocean’s Day and Global Shoreline Clean-Up for guests and hosts. Cultivate strategic partnerships with organizations to receive Sustainability Fund support, and in-kind support from Six Senses hosts, based on guidance around themes and causes from the General Manager and Home Office Sustainability. In conjunction with the Experiences team, develop and lead Sustainability-related experiences for guests that highlight the Hotel’s sustainability efforts, the local community/culture, the unique environment and Sustainability Fund projects.

Implement the most suitable sustainability practices for the operation that are relevant and in line with Six Senses policies.

Oversee NGO partnership agreements in all areas, reviewing project progress and future developmentReview research project proposals, in collaboration with the Research Coordinator, and other MUI staff as appropriate and assist in review of peer reviewed publications from MUI researchEnsure the effective implementation of MUI program and project work plans and deliverables for Research, Community and EducationEnsure effective collaboration and aligned long-term planning between Six Senses marine biologists and NGO partnersResponsible for identifying and applying for relevant awardsEstablish and deliver pre-established financial returns related to revenue generation, profitability and ROIC.

Conduct orientation sessions for all new hires around the topic of Introduction to Sustainability, Waste Management Frameworks, Climate Change, and others as applicableEngage in improving supplier relationships and managing the sustainable supplier database, creating strategic stakeholder interactions to assist in aligning all suppliers with our sustainable principlesDevelop, manage, and execute Earth Lab programs to connect guests to sustainabilityPublic speaking and educating both guests and hosts on climate change, plastic free initiatives, and zero waste lifestylesCollaborate with Marketing and Sales teams to provide timely information for stakeholders and media.

Maintain updated waste management documentation, build relationships with recyclers, and create innovative solutions for on-site upcycling opportunitiesOperate the property consistent with all legal, statutory and financial requirements and documentation, reporting systems, contractual obligations, security and safety protocols, communications, product and service standards, host management practices and budgetary controls are implemented, reviewed and maintained to ensure the successful operation of the hotel. Essential Requirements: To execute the position of Director of Sustainability, I must have the required qualifications, technical skills and experience in a similar role in luxury hotels/resorts/retreat with proven results and includes the following:

Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, or closely related field. I also have the technical skills and at least four years’ experience in a sustainability-related role within hospitality with proven results. Fluent in English; I understand that additional languages are preferred.

Experience with multi-disciplinary teams, as well as familiarity with tropical or coral reef nationsStrong skills in project planning, financing, management, implementation, and evaluationExcellent presentation and communication skills, and very comfortable talking and engaging with stakeholdersDesirable attributes Experience with ESG reporting platformsKnowledge of and experience with GSTC standards and sustainable certificationsExperience in Maldives and understanding of national governance and regulationsKnowledge of tropical marine environments, particularly coral reef, seagrass, and Blue Carbon habitat projectsDemonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategic plans and policyExperience working in high-end hospitality industryDon't quite meet every single requirement, but still believe you'd be a great fit for the job?
