The IP Business Partner is responsible for IP matters relating to a segment of SHL’s business, from drafting and prosecuting patent applications (in cooperation with outside patent counsel) to ensuring freedom to operate (in conjunction with our FTO team based in Taiwan, and outside counsel where appropriate), and negotiating and advising on customer and partner agreements, licensing and portfolio reviews.Main ResponsibilitiesAssist with invention harvesting and prepare new patent applicationsManage patent prosecution, including responding to office actions from the European Patent Office (EPO) as well as providing detailed guidance to non-EPO associates for the preparation of responses to office actions also in other jurisdictionsWork autonomously to manage a portfolio of cases and associated prosecution deadlines, whilst also being able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within both the global IP teamWork alongside the FTO team in assessing and clearing FTO risks for products and projects, facilitating communication with relevant stakeholdersPrepare oppositions and observations by 3rd partiesSupport IP enforcement, conflicts, and litigation, including cooperation and collaboration with other in-house and/or outside counsels, and including developing/driving strategy, gathering evidence, developing claim charts, developing positions, risk assessment, tracking deadlines, and advising stakeholdersMinimum QualificationsAn Engineering degree and broad-based interest in science and technologyA minimum of 2 years experience working as a (trainee) patent attorney in private practice or in-house, or as a patent engineerExperience representing clients/employer directly before the European Patent Office, or supporting such activitiesAn ability to focus on the detail, as well as being able to see the bigger pictureHighly developed communication skills in English, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and concisely to stakeholders of different levels and specializationsPreferred QualificationsTechnical experience in the field of medical devicesExperience with the IPFolio case management toolExperience working with in a cross-cultural teamKnowledge of laws, regulations, practices and procedures relating to patenting in Europe, US and AsiaKnowledge of German or Mandarin, verbal and writtenWe OfferFull support to complete qualification as a European Patent Attorney, or post-qualification training opportunities for more experienced candidatesChallenging assignments in a fast-growing and innovative industry.A multicultural team and modern working environment with state-of-the-art facilities and technologies.A place where we take pride in the inclusive and collaborative environment we have built - one where a true sense of belonging fosters meaningful exchange and shared growth.Various opportunities for personal and professional development within a global organization.Flexible hours and hybrid working policy.
