Junior Data Engineer

About the roleWe’re looking for a Data Engineer to join Matic’s Data team. Matic is growing rapidly, building products that make insurance easier for homeowners across the US. You’ll own the engineering side of our data platform: from ingestion and transformation to quality monitoring and pipeline reliability.Your primary focus will be dbt – building and maintaining SQL transformations that power our analytics and reporting. But you’ll also work with Meltano for data replication. We value curiosity and initiative: you’ll have the freedom to propose solutions and drive improvements across the stack.You’ll collaborate closely with data analysts, analytics engineers, and product teams to ensure that business metrics, segments, and KPIs are accurately modeled and trustworthy.Responsibilities Proactively identify improvements in data pipelines, raise data quality concerns early, and share your knowledge with the team — your growth and the team's success go hand in hand.Build, maintain, and optimize dbt models across staging, intermediate, and mart layers — transforming source data into clean analytical datasets.Develop and monitor data pipelines using Meltano and Python to ingest data from APIs, databases, and third-party services into Snowflake.Ensure data quality through dbt tests, monitoring – working alongside Data QA to catch issues before they reach dashboards.Support the company’s data warehouse (Snowflake) – optimize query performance, manage access controls, and evolve the data architecture as the business grows.Help data analysts and product teams get the data they need – whether that’s a new dbt model, a custom extraction script, or a Metabase/Tableau data source.Requirements Curiosity and a systematic approach to problem-solving – you dig into root causes, not just symptoms.Solid knowledge of SQL – you can write complex queries with window functions, CTEs, and aggregations without hesitation.Working knowledge of Python – you can write clean scripts for data extraction, transformation, and automation (not just Jupyter notebooks).Understanding of data modeling concepts – star schema, slowly changing dimensions, normalization vs. denormalization trade-offs.Familiarity with version control (Git) and code review workflows.English Intermediate and above – ability to communicate your ideas clearly in writing and on calls.Nice-to-have skills:Experience with dbt (dbt-core and dbt Cloud) — building models, defining sources, writing tests, maintaining documentation.Experience with cloud data warehouse: Snowflake.Familiarity with EL tool: Meltano.Basic experience with Docker and containerization concepts.Awareness of orchestration tools: Airflow.Exposure to Kubernetes concepts (pods, deployments, jobs, secrets).Familiarity with BI tools: Metabase, Tableau.Tools we use Transformation: dbt-core, SQLWarehouse: SnowflakeIngestion / EL: Meltano, custom Python scriptsOrchestration: AirflowLanguages: SQL, PythonBI / Reporting: Metabase, TableauInfrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Terraform, HelmWhat We OfferCompetitive salary and Company Equity with refresher policy every 2 yearsUnlimited Paid Time Off (personal, sick, maternity/paternity leave)Flexible working environment (home/office/hybrid)Accounting support (100% coverage)Continuous feedback culture: systematic 1-1 with your manager, performance review meetings every 6 months, and yearly compensation reviewAbout MaticThe Market Leader in Embedded Insurance: Since 2014, Matic has redefined the insurance landscape by integrating high-value coverage directly into the homeownership and auto-buying journey.
