Laser Process Engineer – Robotic Welding & Surface Treatment

Posted: 1 days ago

Job Description

At Tata Technologies we make product development dreams a reality by designing, engineering and validating the products of tomorrow for the world’s leading manufacturers. Due to our continued growth, we are now recruiting for a Laser Process Engineer – Treatment, Welding, Busbar Welding & Battery Cell Decoating (with Robot Integration) to be based at our customer site in Gothenburg.Role Purpose: Own end-to-end commissioning and optimisation of laser process stations for battery pack manufacturing, covering laser surface treatment, laser welding, busbar welding, and laser decoating of battery cells. Ensure process capability, safety compliance, and integration with ABB/Yamaha robots and PLCs to meet standards for quality, cycle time, and maintainability. Key Responsibilities: - Commission, stabilise, and optimise laser processes for: • Laser surface treatment (e.g., cleaning, activation, texturing) • Laser welding (lap/butt, fillet, seam) including parameter windows and spatter control • Busbar welding (as specified by process documentation) including path strategy and thermal input control • Laser decoating of battery cells (foil/can/terminal coatings) with edge quality and HAZ control - Define and validate robot paths/trajectories with Robotics Programmers (ABB RobotStudio / Yamaha RCX Studio), including TCP setup, approach/exit, dwell times, and coordinated motion with process triggers. - Calibrate optics: focus, standoff, beam alignment, scan head parameters (galvo settings), and assist gases. - Develop process recipes (power, speed, frequency, duty, pulse width, focus offset, shielding/assist gas settings); run DoE for parameter optimisation and robustness. - Implement inline quality controls: seam tracking/teaching, pyrometry/photodiode monitoring, weld depth surrogate metrics, bead geometry checks, and laser power monitoring. - Validate safety systems and interlocks (door/guarding, emergency stops, light curtains), and ensure functional safety conformity in conjunction with PLC engineers. - Troubleshoot defects (porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, burn-through, delamination after decoating) and drive corrective actions (path rework, parameter tweaks, fixture improvements). - Own FAT/SAT documentation, CP/CPK trials, GR&R where applicable, and handover packs (SoP, recipes, maintenance plans). - Coordinate with vendor line builders, PLC/robot teams, and quality/manufacturing engineering; maintain backups, version control, and change logs. Required Skills & Experience: - Direct hands-on experience with industrial laser processes in automotive or EV battery manufacturing, including treatment, welding, and decoating applications. - Proficiency with laser sources (fiber, diode), scan heads, optics, and beam delivery; understanding of heat input and metallurgy for common battery pack materials (Al/Al alloys, Cu, Ni, coated steels). - Demonstrated integration experience with ABB/Yamaha robots and PLCs; comfortable defining robot–laser handshakes, triggers, and coordinated motion. - Familiarity with inline monitoring (camera/photodiode/pyrometer), seam tracking, and SPC for process capability. - Working knowledge of fixturing/clamping for thermal stability and dimensional control. - Safety: laser class compliance, guarding, interlocks, exhaust/fume extraction, and LOTO procedures. - Strong problem-solving, DoE/statistics capability; excellent documentation and change control discipline. Nice to Have: - Experience with battery cell terminal preparation, tab welding, and busbar joining strategies. - Exposure to MES/QMS connectivity for traceability of process parameters and results. - Prior commissioning on high-mix, multi-variant laser cells in automotive OEM environments. If you are passionate about bringing innovation to the projects you work on and want to join a global company, then this is the place for you.Tata Technologies: Engineering a better world.Tata Technologies would like to thank all applicants for their interest, each application will be reviewed against the set criteria for the role.
