This position performs advanced fieldwork involving the reading, inspection, and troubleshooting of residential and commercial water meters. Serves as the lead worker for the meter reading team, providing guidance, direction, and support to other meter readers and serving in the absence of the Meter Reader Supervisor.We offer an excellent benefits package to include health, dental and vision, defined contribution plan (457b), life insurance, wellness programs, vacation, sick leave, 12 paid holidays, employee assistance program, tuition reimbursement and more!Your future begins here...Click APPLY now to take the first steps towards your new career!Locates and reads residential and commercial water meters; records readings and enters information into handheld device.Reports leaks or malfunctions requiring repairs to meters, meter boxes, and water lines.Reports unusual circumstances at water meters; enters work codes into handheld device.Enters and completes work orders.Serve as lead meter reader; serve in the absence of the Meter Reader Supervisor. Assists customers by addressing concerns. Provides customers assistance on how to locate, read and monitor water meter and consumption. Answers general questions about utility programs. Performs upload and download of meter reading information from handheld electronic devices to system software, identifying complex consumption problems and recommends corrective measures.Pumps water, digs dirt, and removes mud from meter boxes.Lifts meter boxes and manhole covers when necessary.Turns water on and off.Writes work orders, requests, and daily production reports.Uses handheld device to read automated meters as required.Re-checks meter readings to ensure accuracy and reliability.Operates and maintains an assigned vehicle.Performs other related duties as assigned.Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent one to three years of customer service experience with meter reading preferably in a public works area such as electricity, gas, cable, phone or water service utility; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.Additional RequirementsBackground investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of city streets and geography.Knowledge of job-related computer software and hardware.Knowledge of water meter operation.Skill in the operation of job-related vehicle and equipment.Skill in public and interpersonal relations.Skill in oral and written communication.Minimum StandardsSUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Water Services Supervisor. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city rules and regulations, safety guidelines, vehicle operating procedures, and computer operating procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related meter reading duties. Requires the application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents, and moderate analytic ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions. Inclement weather conditions and field hazards contribute to the complexity of the position.SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the reading of water meters. Assisting and supporting others or individually providing data or facilitating services for use by others; minor to moderate consequence. Success in this position contributes to the accuracy of utility billing.PERSONAL CONTACTS: Regular contact within the department and other departments, outside agencies, and the general public (supplying or seeking information) on specialized matters. Contacts are typically with co-workers, customers, and members of the general public.PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, involving occasional exposure to some disagreeable elements (dust, heat, fumes, cold, noise, vibration, or wetness), and accidents are improbable, other than minor injuries.
