This is how we live the Maya Way, even when no one is watching.Position OverviewThe Manager of Specialized Instruction provides leadership, vision, and direct support for all aspects of specialized instruction across the Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools network. This role ensures high-quality, compliant, and inclusive special education services that meet the diverse needs of all learners while strengthening instructional excellence and collaboration between general and special education.The Manager of Specialized Instruction serves as a member of the School-Based Leadership Team, reporting jointly to the Chief of Schools Team and the Principal of the High School, and provides coaching and oversight to all special education staff. The Manager supervises the Lead Case Manager at the Young Adult Learning Center (YALC) to ensure alignment of systems, compliance, and instructional practices across campuses.This position plays a critical role in creating equitable access for all students and in cultivating a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement among teachers and support staff.ResponsibilitiesSpecific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:Leadership & OversightProvide direct leadership and management of all specialized instruction, compliance, and intervention programming at the Maya Angelou HS and serve as the LEA rep across the charter network.Serve as a key member of the School-Based Leadership Team, collaborating with Assistant Principals, Deans, and instructional leaders to align systems of support, accountability, and student intervention.Ensure all components of IDEA, OSSE, and PCSB requirements are implemented with fidelity and documented accurately.Collaborate and support the Lead Case Manager at YALC to ensure consistent execution of policies, procedures, and compliance expectations across campuses.Collaborate with the Enrollment Team to ensure accurate identification, intake, and documentation of all students with IEPs and 504 plans during enrollment and throughout the year.Support the recruitment, screening, and onboarding of SPED teachers, case managers, and instructional aides under the guidance of the Principal.Foster a positive, growth-oriented culture within the SPED department, modeling professionalism, accountability, and collaboration across teams.Use progress monitoring and data analysis to identify student needs, guide intervention planning, and evaluate the effectiveness of supports.Collaborate with school leaders and staff to align MTSS practices with specialized instruction, ensuring equitable access and consistent execution across campuses.Instructional Leadership & CoachingProvide ongoing coaching, feedback, and professional development to SPED teachers, case managers, and instructional support staff to improve instructional quality and compliance.Lead professional learning on differentiation, accommodations, progress monitoring, co-teaching, and inclusion best practices.Conduct regular classroom walkthroughs and observations, providing actionable feedback to enhance student learning outcomes.Ensure effective implementation of self-contained and inclusion instructional models, maintaining consistent expectations for quality specialized instruction.Serve as an instructional leader for inclusive practices schoolwide, supporting differentiation and accommodations in all classrooms.Compliance & AccountabilityOversee the timely completion of all IEPs, progress reports, and reevaluations to ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.Monitor and analyze SPED data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and use in instructional decision-making.Support case managers in writing measurable IEP goals aligned with student data, classroom performance, and network priorities.Maintain transparent communication with the Chief of Schools and Principal regarding compliance indicators, student progress, and departmental needs.Use data to monitor progress, evaluate program effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement.Familiarity and competence with Special Programs, Child Find, Child Count and other Special Education related platforms and processes.Collaboration & CommunicationPartner with general education leaders and teachers to align SPED practices with the school’s core instructional framework.Collaborate regularly with Assistant Principals to ensure co-teachers and inclusion staff are meeting expectations and deliverables.Support school culture and climate efforts by collaborating and guiding school leadership on interventions and behavioral supports for exceptional learners.Coordinate with related service providers, counselors, and interventionists to ensure comprehensive student support.Communicate regularly with families about student progress, services, and goals in partnership with case managers.QualificationsMaster’s Degree in Special Education or related field (required).Valid OSSE or equivalent state certification in Special Education (required).Minimum 5 years of experience in special education, including teaching, compliance, and leadership responsibilities.Strong understanding of IDEA, IEP development, and specialized instructional practices.Demonstrated success in coaching educators, leading professional development, and improving student outcomes.Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and data management skills.Commitment to educational equity, inclusion, and the mission of the Maya Angelou Schools.Salary and BenefitsMaya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.
