Maritime Safety Queensland is a branch of the Department of Transport and Main Roads within the Policy, Planning and Investment Division. Our role is to protect Queensland's waterways and the people who use them—providing safer, cleaner seas.In the role of Marine Officer, you will strategically lead Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) activities and address marine issues within the Gold Coast area. You will work closely alongside the Gold Coast area Maritime Operations team and MSQ's Compliance and Service Delivery team to ensure service delivery outcomes are achieved.You will assist stakeholders and users of Queensland waterways by delivering compliance and education activities under MSQ's legislative responsibilities which enhance the safe and environmentally friendly use of recreational and commercial crafts in Queensland waters. You will also take a project management and leadership role in investigations, monitoring, on water enforcement, auditing and marine infrastructure and maintenance works.Accountabilities IncludeExternal Stakeholder Relationships Proactively consult with key stakeholders to foster, improve and maintain strong working relationships and meet stakeholder expectations. Establish effective networks with MSQ's enforcement partners, government agencies and other industry organisations to promote MSQ's role as a regulator and participate in joint initiatives (e.g. compliance campaigns) to embed the safe and efficient use of Queensland waterways. Present and/or participate in community-based events to increase community awareness about maritime regulatory requirements and provide legislative advice to customer enquiries.Internal Stakeholder Relationships Partner with MSQ internal teams (e.g. Gold Coast area, Compliance and Service Delivery, and Education teams) to: Manage compliance activities, consisting of education and enforcement strategies. Manage the allocation, adherence to conditions and overall management of mooring permits within the Gold Coast area, including maintaining a mooring audit program. Where required, assist with the maintenance of Marine Operation Base vessels, equipment and Aids to Navigation with the Gold Coast area to ensure continuity of service to the community. Train, mentor and coach staff, where required.Compliance and Investigations Exercise the powers and delegations of a Shipping Inspector and Authorised Officer as defined in the relevant legislation administered by MSQ. Monitor the condition and operation of vessels against legislative requirements to achieve positive safety and environmental outcomes. Locally administer regulatory interventions, such as issuing written directions to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation, particularly the implementation of relevant War on Wrecks recommendations. Complete comprehensive investigations about non-compliance under the relevant legislation and undertake activities as required in preparing and assisting with regulatory intervention, including court processes. Schedule, prepare, conduct and finalise audits and manage a monitoring program for Boat Training Organisations (BTO's) and Providers (BTPs). Reviewing Aquatic Event applications, recommending conditions and monitoring/auditing high risk Aquatic Events. Support the Manager (Compliance) in ensuring that MSQ's legislative compliance initiatives are timely, vigorously pursued, consistently applied, targeted to problem areas and transparent to the users of Gold Coast's waterways.Applications to remain current for 12 months.Job Ad Reference:QLD/667339/25Closing Date: Friday, 7 October 2025Occupational group Fishery & Marine
