Job Description

Company DescriptionMeridian is the largest producer of renewable electricity in Aotearoa and we strive to deliver clean energy for a fairer and healthier world. We only generate electricity from 100% renewable resources – wind, water and sun, because we believe that’s the best way forward for our planet and our communities. And, we’re doing what we can to help Aotearoa reduce their carbon emissions and support others in our generation communities to do the same. We also retail electricity to more than 365,000 homes, businesses and farms across New Zealand through our Meridian and Powershop brands.

Job DescriptionWhat you'll be doing; As a summer intern with Meridian Energy, you'll get the opportunity to work on some of New Zealand's most iconic hydro and wind generation assets, as well as being active in all aspects of the company. The programme will push you to develop real-life business and technical skills. We only take a small number of interns each year, and we only want the best! In return, we’ll make sure you get some great hands-on experience.

You’ll be trusted with owning significant projects and will be supported by a friendly team of experts along the way, who will help develop your knowledge, skills, and professional profile. We are lucky enough to have 2 available locations (Christchurch or Twizel), and you’ll be placed at either one of them – both with awesome opportunities and unique benefits. What you’ll get?Hands-on experience at some of Aotearoa’s most iconic energy generation sites, working alongside experienced mechanical engineers to tackle real-world challenges.

From materials science and thermodynamics to vibration analysis and control systems, you'll apply your academic knowledge in practical, high-impact settings. Over the course of 400+ professional hours, you’ll deepen your technical expertise, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and gain a firsthand understanding of how New Zealand’s energy systems are kept running smoothly. This is your opportunity to explore the full scope of the country’s energy infrastructure while building the skills, insights, and connections to power your future. This programme may also open the door to limited opportunities within our Graduate Programme, though placement is not guaranteed.

What are we after? If you're studying Mechanical Engineering and are currently in your 3rd year, then our summer internship is the programme for you! We’ve got a strong culture - we like to work hard and have fun whilst we’re doing it. We live by three ‘How to Be’s’: Be gutsy, be a good human, and be in the waka. Why Meridian?Meridian is truly flexible, diverse, and inclusive: in our workplace, you can feel comfortable bringing your whole self to work.

Our internship is a great pathway to our grad roles, giving us a strong indication of your work ethics, and giving you an understanding of why Meridian is a great place to work. What next?If this sounds like you and something you’re keen to be a part of, and you want to bring your good energy and use your power to make a difference (pun intended), then apply today by uploading a copy of your CV and a Transcript with your application, telling us why you want to be considered.

Feel free to also add a cover letter to your application, to give us even more reasons to bring you on board! Please note - you’ll need to be available for interviews via teams the week of 25th August 2025 (NB timeframes may be adjusted and we will advise you in advance of any changes).
