Job Description

These are exceptional opportunities to join our Board. Here at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS FT we are one of the hospitals selected to be part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme. These are rare Non-Executive Board opportunities that will help shape the future services for a population of c. 300,000 and the way they are delivered. At the Trust we aim to inspire hope and provide unparalleled care for the people and communities of Cheshire, helping them to enjoy life to the fullest. The Trust comprises:

Leighton Hospital, Crewe, Victoria Infirmary, Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre, Winsford, in addition to a comprehensive community service through the Central Cheshire Integrated Community Partnership. We have played, and continue to play a proactive role in the development of Integrated Care plans across Cheshire & Merseyside and our local Cheshire East and Cheshire West Place-based systems. We believe, and it is the cornerstone of our five-year Trust Strategy, there is the opportunity to progress innovative, responsive and effective care in the best setting for the patient, be it in the hospital or out in the community.

MCHT is well-placed to play a leading role in helping to create and drive this vision forward, supported by our ambitious plans for our estate, digital technology and corporate services that align with and will help deliver step changes in our clinical model. These new Non-Executive Directors will be integral to this journey. As a member of a unitary Board, there is a shared and collective responsibility amongst all Board Directors for the overall strategic direction and performance of the Trust.

All Board members are required to challenge, scrutinise and add value to proposals brought to Board and must satisfy themselves as to the appropriateness and integrity of the information that is submitted. Board members are also responsible for satisfying themselves that effective controls and systems are in place to ensure good governance of the Trust and the Board is accountable for its performance, through the Non-Executive Directors, to the Council of Governors, ensuring that the Board acts in the best interests of its patients and the wider community.

Whilst this post will be required to take on responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director as identified below, there is a specific requirement for one of the positions to provide independent judgement, expertise and challenge to the Leighton New Hospital Programme and the overall requirement will, therefore, be tempered accordinglyMid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond.

The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008. We employ almost 5,000 members of staff, provide around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health. The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Trust was recognised nationally for its ‘Be Safe Be EquiPPEd’ campaign, which aimed to make the Trust as safe as possible for staff and patients, through supporting the correct use of PPE. The results in the 2020 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in all elements of the safety culture theme, with 92% of respondents feeling their role made a difference to our patients. We were also recognised nationally for our workforce health and wellbeing initiatives.

At Mid Cheshire, we value our staff and appreciate that in order to give our patients the best quality, compassionate care, we also need to look after our colleagues.
