Preparators and Mountmakers(Part-Time / Seasonal)The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) seeks skilled and reliable Preparators and Mountmakers to support our Exhibitions and Registrar Teams for exhibition prepping and installation periods. Both positions would have access to the Museum’s space, equipment, and supplies. This is an ongoing, open requisition for applications. Selected candidates will be contacted throughout the year dependent upon exhibit need and scheduling. Specifics regarding required dates, duration and working schedule will be discussed during the interview process. Preparator Primary ResponsibilitiesPacks and unpacks artworksCreates packing and housing for artworksLoads and unloads artworks, fabrications, supplies, etc.

Installs and deinstalls artworks in conformity with established conservation specificationsPrepares galleries for installations—including but not limited to cleaning, scraping vinyl, demolition, painting, patching, and placing/assembling fabricationsMoves all necessary tools, hardware, installation materials, worktables, blankets, ladders,scaffolding, personnel lift, work carts, bins, lights, light canisters, audio-visual equipment, stanchions, fabrications, and mounts, etc.

Operates shop machinery, including hand and power tools and work cartsFrames artworks, prints, photographs, documents, and ephemera in conformity with established conservation specificationsMakes, mounts, positions, and installs labels and other graphic elementsMaintains an organized and clean working environment and communicates inventory/supply needsPerforms routine exhibition maintenance and maintains exhibition lightingCleans cases, platforms, and framesPerforms related duties as requiredMountmaker Primary ResponsibilitiesResponsible for the design, fabrication, and installation of artwork support systems, made from materials such as steel and brass among others, both from the Museum’s collection and incoming exhibition loansDesign unique mounting solutions for fragile and complicated works of art for displayCollaborate with internal stakeholders, including the exhibition designer, conservators, registrars, and curators on the mount design and executionHandle the artwork in conformity with established conservation specifications Generate mount documentation and installation and deinstallation instructionsMaintain an organized and clean working environmentMaintain proper use and care for equipment and suppliesCommunicate inventory/supply and equipment needs Set up and takedown of mount making studio before and after usePerform related duties as required Education And ExperienceExtensive knowledge of museum art handling and packing standards, and appropriate care for a wide range of objectsFor mountmakers, excellent acetylene torch skills, familiarity of chemical hygiene, and experience fabricating brass mountsGeneral knowledge of fabrication and construction methodsBasic knowledge of electrical practice, electronics, and mechanical installationsAbility to interpret and follow detailed instructionsAbility to work in a team environment and to work tactfully and effectively with fellow staff, vendors, curators, and the publicAbility to safely operate and or work from personnel lifts, scaffolding, and laddersStrong initiative and work ethic with flexibility to respond to and act in changing circumstances, often under pressureExcellent verbal and written communication skillsExcellent interpersonal skillsExcellent organizational skills and attention to detailExcellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlinesStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsOccasional work on weekends and evenings as necessaryCOVID guidelines:
