Join us in driving innovative energy solutions that contribute to a more resilient energy future. Role DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced Operations and Engineering Manager to lead the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and engineering activities of our reciprocating engine power plants in Alberta. This role is critical for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable power generation while coordinating with third-party engineering consultants and contract O&M (Operations and Maintenance) providers to optimize plant performance and compliance. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical and controls systems, with hands-on expertise in protective relaying, automation, and data historian programming. This position requires a proactive leader who can balance operational generation demands with engineering oversight within a regulated distribution and transmission utility environment, including regular travel for field plant requirements and inspections.Key ResponsibilitiesOversee daily operations of power plants, including monitoring equipment performance, managing power output, and ensuring uninterrupted service to meet site dispatch demands.Direct maintenance activities working with contract O&M providers, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on engines, generators, and auxiliary systems to minimize downtime and extend asset life.Coordinate engineering efforts with third-party consultants and O&M contractors, including reviewing new facility designs, implementing upgrades to existing facilities, and integrating new technologies for improved efficiency and reliability.Facilitate weekly coordination meetings with internal teams, consultants, and contract providers to align on operational plans, maintenance schedules, and project updates.Support budget management, including invoice reviews and approval for services from third-party providers, ensuring cost-effective operations and accurate financial tracking.Conduct out-of-town field inspection visits to remote plant sites as required, assessing equipment conditions, verifying compliance, and supporting on-site troubleshooting.Ensure compliance with Alberta-specific regulations, including the Alberta Electrical Utility Code (AEUC), Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES), Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS).Develop and implement operational procedures, emergency response plans, and outage management strategies.Analyze plant data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and recommend improvements in coordination with 3rd party O&M providers.Manage utility interconnection and protection schemes, ensuring alignment with Alberta's grid reliability standards.Collaborate with stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, utilities, suppliers, consultants, and contract providers, to support plant operations, expansions, retrofits, or compliance audits.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or a related field; professional engineering designation (P.Eng.) in Alberta is preferred.Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in power plant operations and maintenance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role focused on reciprocating engine, Gas Turbine and BESS technologies.Strong electrical and controls background, with demonstrated experience in utility-scale power systems.Must hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license for travel to remote sites and field inspections.Willingness to work in a 24/7 operational environment, including on-call duties, occasional out-of-town travel, and flexibility for weekly meetings. Required Skills and ExpertiseWorking knowledge of SEL RTAC (Real-Time Automation Controller) and Breaker Relay programming for utility and equipment protection schemes, including compliance requirements with Alberta's DER Utilities and AESO standards.Familiarity with Alberta-specific protection requirements, such as those for grid interconnection, fault detection, and anti-islanding, as per the AEUC, AESO, Fortis & ATCO Information/Standards Documents.Proficiency in Ignition Automation Historian programming for data logging, trending, and reporting in SCADA systems.Experience working with contract O&M providers, including contract management, performance oversight, and integration of external services into plant operations.Strong organizational skills for managing invoices, budgets, and administrative tasks related to third-party engagements.Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex systems and implement solutions under pressure.Strong leadership and communication abilities to manage cross-functional teams, facilitate meetings, and liaise with external partners.Commitment to safety protocols, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and electrical hazard mitigation as per Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Code.Company BenefitsVersorium offers competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for career growth within a growing smart energy platform.
