Zero Gravity Oy is developing a next-generation imaging payload for CubeSats.Location: Espoo, FinlandWe are seeking an Optical Payload Engineer to design, prototype, and test a miniaturized imaging system combining advanced optics and precision electronics.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and prototype novel optical architectures for CubeSat payloads — exploring compact, high-resolution imaging concepts beyond traditional lens systems.Develop innovative optical configurationsDevelop and operate a calibration bench for optical performance testing.Integrate optical sensors and focal plane assemblies into CubeSat payloads.Support optical layout design and simulation (Zemax / MATLAB / Code V).Conduct laboratory calibration (SNR, MTF, radiometric accuracy).Ensure full compatibility with CubeSat bus interfaces Document optical design, calibration procedures, and performance results, contributing to ESA-style technical reviews and qualification documentation.RequirementsMSc or PhD in Optics, Photonics, Imaging, Applied Physics, Electrical/Nanotechnology Engineering, or a CubeSat-related field.Strong understanding of Optical Physics and Photonics principles.Hands-on experience in optical laboratories, including alignment, calibration, or imaging experiments.1–5 years of relevant experience in optics, imaging systems, or space instrumentation (not mandatory for exceptional graduates).Being able to think independently, good problem solving and innovation skillsExperience with PCB design tools (KiCAD, Altium, or EAGLE).Familiarity with optical system design and testing.Knowledge of imaging sensors, signal acquisition, and analog/digital front-end design and expertHands-on experience in lab testing and payload integration.Join Zero Gravity Oy to help develop a compact, high-performance optical payload enabling the next generation of space imaging missions.💡 Preferred Experience System-level thinker with the ability to navigate between optical, electrical, and mechanical domains.Strong problem-solving skills and “out-of-the-box” creativity.Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.Publications in top academic journalsCollaborative mindset and readiness to work with research and industry partners (Aalto University, ESA).🧩 Soft SkillsSystem-level thinking and cross-disciplinary communication.Problem solving skills and out of the box thinkingCollaborative mindset for working with Aalto University and ESA partners.What You’ll GainWork on real CubeSat payload hardware with measurable performance goalsCollaboration with Aalto Small Satellite Lab and ESA technical partners.Growth opportunities and possible business trips within EU for the conferences.How to ApplyPlease send your CV, motivation letter, and university transcript and references to:📧 olga.bodet@zerogravity.fi or careers@zerogravity.fiSubject line: “ESA Payload Project”
