Who We Are: The Orthodox Union (OU) is the largest Orthodox Jewish organization in the United States. Founded in 1898, the OU supports a network of synagogues, youth programs, Jewish and Religious Zionist advocacy programs, programs for the disabled, localized religious study programs, and international units. The OU maintains a kosher certification service, whose circled U symbol is found on the labels of many kosher commercial and consumer food products. Position Summary: The Bookkeeper is responsible for reimbursing mashgichim for work-related expenses and issuing payments for their factory visits and inspections.
This role also includes billing the visited food companies when applicable. The position requires strong attention to detail, math skills, and comfort working with data and receipts using internal OU systems and software. This position is Full-Time, Hybrid — 3 days in-office (Lower Manhattan), 2 days remote per weekKey Responsibilities: Analyze and process expense reports using internal company software, including calculating pay and billing rates according to established guidelines. Review and total expense receipts, including foreign currency conversions as needed, and attribute expenses appropriately across various accounts.
Manage the reimbursement process and issue payments to mashgichim for site visits and inspections in a timely and accurate manner. Generate billing for Kashrus companies when applicable based on completed visits. Ensure the accuracy and compliance of submitted expense reports and documentation through regular communication with mashgichim and a weekly audit of processed work before finalizing payments. High School diploma requiredKnowledge of Hebrew and familiarity with Jewish kosher practices is requiredPrior office experience a plusProficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and PDFsBasic mathematical skills required for calculating reimbursements and billing ratesStrong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detailClear and professional communication skills, both written and verbalAbility to work collaboratively as part of a teamSalary and Benefits: The salary for this position is between $50,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience.
