Country Manager – JapanFMCG | Consumer BeautyOur client is a global leader in the beauty and personal care industry, with a portfolio of high-performing, consumer-loved brands sold across multiple channels. Japan is one of the company’s most strategically important markets, offering significant potential for growth and brand building. We are seeking an exceptional commercial leader to take full ownership of the Japan business, driving strategy, P&L, and market execution across sales, marketing, and channel development. Key ResponsibilitiesThe Country Manager will define and execute the strategic direction of the Japan business in alignment with APAC and global priorities.
This includes delivering sustainable, profitable growth through market expansion, portfolio optimisation, and operational excellence, while ensuring strong cross-functional collaboration with regional and global teams. A core focus will be on developing and implementing robust commercial strategies across Japan’s beauty and personal care channels, including drugstores and pharmacies, mass market retailers, cosmetic specialty stores, e-commerce platforms, and professional dermatological clinics. The role will also be responsible for identifying and capturing new distribution opportunities and developing innovative go-to-market approaches.
The Country Manager will lead the full Japan organisation, encompassing both commercial and corporate functions, to ensure cohesive execution of business priorities. This includes shaping market strategies, overseeing brand-building initiatives, and delivering differentiated in-store and digital activations tailored to each channel to drive consumer engagement, category growth, acquisition, and retention. The role will also lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
This includes attracting and retaining top talent, ensuring the organisation has the skills and capabilities to meet current and future business needs, and creating an environment where people can thrive and perform at their best. The Ideal CandidateThe successful candidate will be degree-qualified with at least 15 years of leadership experience in FMCG, beauty, or consumer goods, including a minimum of 5 years in a senior role in Japan. A proven track record of delivering significant business growth or leading successful market turnarounds, supported by strong P&L management expertise and commercial acumen.
Demonstrated the ability to shape winning market strategies, lead both commercial and corporate functions, and build high-performing teams. Experience in navigating complex retail and e-commerce environments is essential, as is the ability to act as a decisive and inspiring leader with the vision, agility, and stakeholder influence to succeed in a fast-changing market.
