We help you discover meaningful work with teams that invest in your success, where you’re empowered to grow personally and professionally.Join one of the highest-rated workplaces on Glassdoor and experience what it means to thrive in a truly remote-first world.About the RoleWe’re looking for a Payroll Executive to deliver expert advice, end-to-end payroll processing, and compliance support to clients. You’ll work directly with customers to assess their payroll systems, ensure full legislative compliance, and implement process improvements that enhance accuracy and efficiency. This role is ideal for someone who combines deep payroll expertise with excellent communication skills and enjoys working across both operational and consultative functions.ResponsibilitiesClient Support & Consultation – Assess clients’ payroll systems and processes, identify areas for improvement, and recommend effective, compliant solutionsPayroll Processing – Manage accurate, start-to-finish payroll operations on a weekly and monthly basis for 1,500+ employees, including filing all required reports with HMRCTax-Year End Activities – Complete all statutory submissions including P11Ds, P60s, and PSAs in accordance with UK legislationCompliance & Reporting – Ensure full adherence to payroll legislation; prepare journals, reconciliations, and ad-hoc reports as requiredClient Communication – Serve as the main point of contact for clients, providing clear and timely responses to all payroll-related queriesLiaison with HMRC – Handle communication and submissions to HMRC, ensuring all queries are resolved efficientlyAdvisory Expertise – Act as a trusted advisor for customers on general payroll matters, data inconsistencies, or issues affecting payroll processingCollaboration & Product Support – Work with internal product and development teams to resolve technical payroll challenges and contribute to product enhancementsContinuous Improvement – Identify and communicate opportunities to improve internal payroll processes and support offeringsFeature Implementation – Support the implementation of new features aligned with business and client requirementsRequirements2+ years of professional experience in payroll administration, with a strong and up-to-date understanding of payroll laws and regulationsProven experience managing end-to-end payroll processes for large employee volumesProficiency with payroll software and Microsoft Office suite, especially ExcelExcellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to manage client relationships effectivelyStrong organisational and multitasking skills — able to handle multiple clients and projects concurrentlyHigh attention to detail and accuracy, with strong problem-solving abilitiesAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively across teamsNice to HavePart or fully CIPP-qualified, or equivalent payroll certificationExperience with payroll system implementation or process automation projectsFamiliarity with HR or accounting system integrationsAt Smart Working, you’ll never be just another remote hire.Be a Smart Worker — valued, empowered, and part of a culture that celebrates integrity, excellence, and ambition.If that sounds like your kind of place, we’d love to hear your story.
