University: Universidad Politécnica de MadridCountry: SpainDeadline: 2025-07-30Fields: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Engineering, PhysicsThe School of Aeronautics (ETSIAE) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) invites applications for PhD and postdoctoral positions as part of the European Research Council (ERC)-funded project “Off-coustics. ” This project is dedicated to advancing the understanding and minimization of the acoustic footprint generated by offshore wind and tidal turbines, with the ultimate goal of designing environmentally friendly and silent offshore energy farms.
The Off-coustics project employs a combination of numerical simulations and experimental investigations to study the physics of aero/hydro-acoustic generation and propagation, aiming to mitigate adverse impacts on marine ecosystems. Open Positions– Experimental Aero/Hydro-Acoustics: Responsibilities include conducting wind tunnel and water tank experiments on wind and tidal turbines, and quantifying aero/hydro-acoustic emissions under varying operational conditions. – Computational Aero/Hydro-Acoustics: Responsibilities include developing and implementing aero/hydro-acoustic functionalities within the high-order discontinuous Galerkin solver HORSES3D. Requirements– A PhD in engineering or applied mathematics. – Expertise in either experimental aeroacoustics or computational fluid dynamics (CFD). – For experimental roles:
experience with microphones and hydrophones. – For computational roles: proficiency in finite elements, high-order discontinuous Galerkin methods, Python, Fortran, and high-performance computing (HPC). – Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Spanish is advantageous but not mandatory. Benefits– Competitive salary (2-year contracts for postdoctoral researchers, 3-year contracts for PhD candidates). – A dynamic, multicultural, and stimulating research environment. – Involvement in innovative, ERC-funded scientific research.
