Robotics for Textile Handling: This project focuses on the design and development of fast, force-sensitive robotic grippers capable of recognizing, unfolding, and sorting garments. Incorporating elements such as motion planning, digital twins, and advanced control systems, the research addresses key challenges in automating textile handling, reducing waste, and improving resource efficiency. Both projects address pressing societal needs by promoting sustainable solutions in the textile industry, a sector facing significant environmental and logistical challenges.

Project Details– PhD 1: AI for Textile Recognition– Work with hyperspectral, NIR, and Raman sensors. – Build embedded AI pipelines for textile sorting. – Contribute to the advancement of textile sorting technologies. – PhD 2: Robotics for Textile Handling– Design and develop fast, force-sensitive robotic grippers. – Implement motion planning, digital twins, and control systems. – Innovate solutions for real-time garment recognition, unfolding, and sorting. Both positions are fully funded for four years and are embedded in an interdisciplinary team with a practical, hands-on approach. The successful candidates will work in close collaboration with international partners and contribute to impactful research outcomes.

The expected start date for these positions is before November 1, 2025. Candidate ProfileRequirementsThe ideal candidates for these PhD positions are talented engineers with a strong background and a drive for innovation. The requirements include: – A Master’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field, with a solid foundation in optical and spectroscopic instrumentation (hyperspectral, NIR, Raman systems). – Demonstrated hands-on experience in rapid prototyping (PCB design, laser cutting, 3D printing) and middleware development for measurement systems integration. Experience in high-throughput sorting lines is an advantage.

– Proficiency in developing, training, and deploying AI-driven sensor-fusion pipelines, including preprocessing, deep-learning model architectures, and on-device inference on edge-compute platforms. – Strong analytical problem-solving skills, with experience in experimental design, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and validation of innovative engineering solutions. – Ability to anticipate technical and schedule risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement quality assurance processes to meet performance and compliance benchmarks. – Leadership capabilities to guide interdisciplinary teams, foster collaboration, and drive continuous improvement and innovation. – Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to present findings and collaborate effectively within international teams.
