This role involves preparing specimens for laboratory testing, maintaining work areas, and adhering to infection control protocols. The Phlebotomist interacts with patients professionally and provides accurate information regarding collection procedures.Essential FunctionsPerforms venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood specimens as orderedProperly labels, logs, and processes specimens according to laboratory protocolsPrepares collection trays and ensures the cleanliness and restocking of work areasProvides clear instructions to patients regarding collection procedures and testsMonitors patient condition during and after specimen collection to ensure safetyDocuments specimen collection in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)Assists with clerical tasks including filing, data entry, and managing patient recordsEnsures compliance with infection control and safety protocols in all patient interactionsResponds to inquiries from patients, staff, and other departments regarding laboratory servicesParticipates in training, quality assurance, and continuing education as requiredKnowledge/Skills/Abilities/ExpectationsKnowledge of specimen collection techniques, equipment, and protocolsStrong communication and interpersonal skills for patient interactionAttention to detail for accurate labeling and documentationProficiency in data entry and laboratory information systemsAbility to handle stressful situations and provide compassionate careKnowledge of infection control procedures and safety standardsAbility to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs in a clinical settingQualificationsEducationHigh school diploma or equivalent requiredCompletion of a formal phlebotomy training program preferredLicenses/CertificationsPhlebotomy Certification preferredBasic Life Support (BLS) Certification within timeframe required by facility policyExperienceSix (6) months of acute care phlebotomy experience or one (1) year experience in outpatient lab setting preferred
