Please note, however, that members of management will not be considered for secondments into bargaining unit positions.This position reports to the Manager of Urban Design in the Planning and Development Department. This position will be of interest to Urban Designers, Urban Planners, Architects, Landscape Architects, Urban Geographers and GIS Specialists.Job ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for providing research and analytical supports and technical urban design expertise in supporting and advancing various strategic departmental and corporate initiatives.As a member of department and corporate multi-disciplinary teams, the Planning Technician will: Assist in preparing urban design, built form, and public realm strategies, studies, and guiding materials Support updating policies, procedures, standards and by-laws related to urban design, built form, public realm, landscape design, and community development Provide supporting design and technical expertise on design team and department-led studies, corporate strategic initiatives and capital projects Assist in the logistics for public meetings, focus groups, and citizen engagement activities related to special studies and design document development Assist in preparing content and images for reports and presentations Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications/Skills University degree in Urban Design, Planning, Geography or Landscape Architecture. Minimum of one to two (1-2) years of experience in the Urban Design and Planning field, preferably within a municipal government setting and additional experience is an asset. Sound understanding of urban design and land use planning principles and practices. Experience in creating urban design policy and direction documents, generating conceptual design plans, and undertaking urban design initiatives. Strong, written, graphic, and oral communication skills, proven organizational abilities, and multi-disciplinary teamwork experience. Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology and software (including full Adobe Suite, SketchUp, AutoCAD, ArcGIS/QGIS, City Engine and ArcUrban) for creating GIS map layers, generating drawings and renders to communicate urban design concepts, and preparing desktop publishing deliverables. The successful candidate will be required to supply their own personal vehicle to attend sites throughout the town as required for performing job duties/corporate business.DATED: November 19, 2025 This job profile reflects the general requirements necessary to perform the principal functions of the job.
