Posted: 1 days ago

Job Description

The Department of Chemistry, with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. The Research spans all areas of chemistry such as analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry and organic chemistry. The research projects are many from theory to experiment, from basic research to more applied projects often focusing on sustainable chemistry but also advanced analytical methods of chemicals and materials. The department has a very well-developed research infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment with qualified support from staff scientists. The department also hosts the Bachelor's degree programme in chemistry and three Master's programmes: analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. PhD programmes are conducted in five areas: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry.More information about us, please visit: the Department of Chemistry.Project descriptionThe Postdoctoral Fellow position is associated with the ERC-StG project CIRCULIG "Circular lignin materials from well-defined functional building blocks".The Postdoctoral Fellow will focus on lignin electrochemistry, including the functionalization of lignins and their derivatives, as well as the use of lignin nanomaterials as supports and active components in catalytic, organic, bio-, and electrochemical reactions. Lignin-based catalyst carriers, electrodes, and other functional materials will be characterized using state-of-the-art analytical techniques. A particular emphasis will be placed on circularity, including reusability and the potential for safe upcycling and recycling. The Fellow will work within an interdisciplinary team with deep expertise in lignin spanning molecular, supramolecular, and macroscopic scales. The position is based in the Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM) research group, which develops materials from industrial side-streams, with a particular focus on lignin. The group consists of about 25 members with diverse expertise in chemistry and engineering. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work in this interdisciplinary environment and carry out bottom-up research on hybrid living materials, contributing to the broader goal of replacing fossil-based materials and advancing sustainable solutions.Main responsibilitiesScientific research and education. Development of electrochemical methods for lignin-based materials in a broad context. This includes covalent and non-covalent chemistries, material fabrication, characterization and investigation of circular processing and sustainable chemistry aspects. The Postdoctoral Fellow is also expected to instruct students and trainees, and to contribute to project management, communication, and dissemination activities.Qualification requirementsIn order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.Assessment criteriaIt is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.In the appointment process, particular emphasis will be placed on demonstrated research expertise in applied electrochemistry, especially in the areas of polymers and other soft materials. Proven skills in lignin chemistry will be considered an additional merit. Experience in developing and applying electrochemical methods and related analytical techniques for material characterization and performance evaluation will also be regarded as a merit. The ideal candidate exhibits a problem-solving mindset and a strong record of original research. The candidate must have an excellent command of English, both spoken and written.About The EmploymentThe position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances.
