The primary objective of the Product Development Engineer - Solar and Battery Storage (in collaboration with our partners at EG4 Electronics) is to lead the design, testing, internal training, and deployment of a battery-backed, solar water well solution that will allow Amazi Water to more effectively and economically support the communities we are called to serve. This role ensures all installations are reliable, safe, cost-effective, and scalable.

Reporting & Documentation Technical LeadershipDesign and supervise the installation of solar-powered water pumping systems, control panels, and electrical wiringStandardize electrical engineering practices and ensure alignment with industry codes, Amazi Water’s quality standards and safety regulationsConduct regular maintenance and inspections of our solar water systemsMonitor and analyze systems performance data and prepare technical reports and documentationEnsure all electrical systems are scalable, serviceable, and climate resilientPerform safety audits and risk assessments for all our solar systemsDevelop and implement new solar systems projectsLead troubleshooting efforts on underperforming or malfunctioning electrical systems to minimize downtimeProvide weekly updates to both Amazi and EG4 Electronics leadership on the progress of the development and implementation of the proposed solutionDevelop and implement an effective strategy to train pertinent team members on this new solutionMeet weekly with US and East Africa-based EG4 Electronics team members to design, test, and troubleshoot prototypeContribute to engineering planning, including feasibility studies, site assessments, system sizing, and bill of quantities (BoQs) for proposed battery-backed sitesCollaborate with hydrogeologists, civil engineers, technical teams in operations teams to deliver integrated and functional systemsEnsure timely completion of electrical components within project timelines and budgetsEnsure all work complies with national electrical standards, safety regulations, and internal quality standardsEstablish inspection and testing procedures and maintain quality control throughout installation and maintenance phasesMaintain safety protocols for working with solar PV systems and electrical infrastructureProvide expert oversight on high-risk installations and upgradesContinuously seek opportunities and evaluate new tools, components or design methods improve battery-backed solution to improve system efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and technical sustainabilityConduct technical trials of new battery technologies and storage solutions for solar systemsPromote a culture of innovation by encouraging field-based testing and continuous technical improvementStay up to date on relevant technological advancements in solar, battery and water systems that could be used for solar-powered water pumping systemsMaintain accurate records of all installations, maintenance logs, and technical manualsProvide regular reports on performance metrics, system uptime, and electrical-related incidentsSupport donor and internal reporting by providing clear technical documentationQualificationsBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related fieldMinimum 7 years of professional experience in solar or electrical systems, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management roleProven experience with solar-powered systems, preferably in rural or off-grid settingsExperience with water infrastructure (pumps, control systems, boreholes, distribution networks) is highly desirableFamiliarity with solar system design tools and electrical CAD softwareRegistration with a recognized engineering body is an assetKEY COMPETENCIESStrong technical and analytical skillsDemonstrated leadership, people management, and team development abilitiesStrong project management and organizational skillsAbility to work in field-based, resource-constrained environmentsCommitment to Amazi Water’s mission and valuesFluency in French or English requiredMust demonstrate a love for Burundi and a love for Jesus ChrisWORKING CONDITIONSStandard work week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday, with flexibility required based on project needsSignificant fieldwork is expected, up to 80% of time will be spent visiting installation sites, conducting assessments, or supporting field teamsAbility to work in rural environments and adapt to varied field conditions is essentialTravel for training or technical exchange within the region may occasionally be requiredThis role is a one-year contract position.
