Job Description

Step into a high-impact role where your legal expertise directly supports public confidence and good governance. As a Senior Lawyer in our in-house legal team, you’ll manage a diverse caseload including prosecutions, appeals, and statutory litigation for multiple Queensland Government agencies in various jurisdictions. The Business and Corporate Partnership (BCP) division provides strategic advice, leads key programs implementation and delivers corporate services that enable the department to achieve its objectives.

When you join BCP you will be partnering with our colleagues across the divisions to drive and find solutions and help foster a workplace culture focused on our people. Join our in-house legal team as a Senior Lawyer and play a key role in providing expert legal services to three Queensland Government agencies: the Department of Primary Industries, Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development and the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation. In this flexible full-time role (temporary to June 2027), you'll lead and manage complex prosecutions, statutory appeals, and tribunal litigation.

Your responsibilities will include providing high-level legal advice, appearing in court or instructing counsel, and managing sensitive matters with independence and confidence. You'll engage with internal clients up to Deputy Director-General level and contribute to governance reporting and legislative improvement. You'll report to the Managing Principal Lawyer (Appeals and Prosecutions) and work as part of a 15-member team dedicated to delivering efficient, consistent, and cost-effective legal services. You'll also help guide and support junior team members, and coordinate with external legal providers to ensure high-quality, timely outcomes for the state.

Key Responsibilities IncludeManaging a caseload of criminal and civil litigation, including prosecutions and appeals. Appearing as an advocate and/or instructing legal counsel in matters before the Magistrates Court, District Court, Land Court, and QCAT. Providing expert legal advice to internal stakeholders on complex legal issues. Reviewing briefs of evidence, reporting outcomes to executives, and drafting key documentation. Supporting process improvement and mentoring less experienced staff.
