Job Description

An exciting opportunity exists for a highly experienced forensic chemist to lead an analytical services team in delivering expert chemical criminalistic evidence to operational police and courts of law including fire debris analysis for the presence of ignitable liquid residues, examination of paint, glass, gunshot residue, lachrymatory agents (capsicum sprays), light bulb examinations and the botanical certification of Cannabis. Refer to role description for more information. Your Key AccountabilitiesThe core capability requirements for this role are:

Lead and manage forensic chemists to deliver high quality trace chemical and Cannabis evidence for police investigations and courts of law, in compliance with Queensland Police Service (QPS) Forensic Service Services Quality System. Prioritise, conduct and overview complex trace chemical evidence examinations, including use of instrumental methods of analysis, technical reviews of case files, peer reviews of statements and reports, ensuring provision of a timely and quality service. Attend pre-trial conferences, prepare statements and reports, conduct and overview presentation of forensic trace chemical evidence and provide expert testimony to courts of law.

Lead and manage the administrative, operational and quality management activities and processes within the Analytical Services Unit, including development and performance of staff and coordinator and delivery of training. Foster professional relationships with clients and stakeholders and represent QPS on committees and advisory boards. Provide high quality strategic advice, reports and submissions to senior management relating to the Unit's service delivery.

Lead the development, research and implementation of innovative processes and practises including the coordination and training of QPS personnel relevant to trace chemical examinationsRole RequirementsMandatory Minimum of five years demonstrated experience in the field of forensic chemical trace evidence within a State or Commonwealth Department or other recognised agency. Possession of a ā€œCā€ Class Driver's Licence as travel for official business is a requirement of the role. Qualification Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Science with major study components in chemistry from a recognised tertiary institution, or an equivalent qualification.

Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience Subject/s completed from a tertiary institution in plant biology, botany or cell biology would be highly desirable. Relevant post-graduate qualifications in chemistry, forensic science and/or management would be highly desirable. Relevant experience in the analysis of one or more of the disciplines of ignitable liquid residues, paint, glass, gunshot residue, lachrymatory agents (capsicum sprays), light bulb examinations and botanical identification of Cannabis including accompanying court experience would be highly desirable.
