ABOUT THE ROLEThis position is responsible for conducting and overseeing research and innovation technical projects that address operational problems, create process efficiencies, or contribute to the attainment of long-term goals for the Department’s five business lines, in the areas of drinking water treatment and delivery, wastewater collection and treatment, climate change and energy conservation, waste and forestry management. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOINGInitiates and conducts research, including with external research partners, focused on Public Works’ business needs to support and advance the Department’s master plans.Formulates long range programs to promote and conduct research and adoption of innovative technologies for all departmental lines of business. Consults, coordinates, and works with various internal stakeholders, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, contractors, water and wastewater industry professionals and research universities on complex studies and investigations and reports on material design, testing, and usage. Oversees third party consultants and manages feasibility/functional studies and projects. Meets with operations and other staff to discuss operational challenges and provides technical expertise and possible solutions.Collaborates with engineers and technicians in the department on process and technology optimization and modernization; reviews and analyzes system and business performance and identifies areas for optimization; plans, co-ordinates and implements projects related to the review and optimization of new and existing systems and processes.Evaluates engineering designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, standards, guidelines, and Regional policies.Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FORSuccessful completion of a University Degree in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Design, Chemical Engineering or related field.Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with the Professional Engineers Ontario.Minimum five (5) years demonstrated experience (inclusive of E.I.T. experience) in areas of water and wastewater, transportation, environmental or similar industrial processes including research, design, engineering, and project management.Demonstrated knowledge of relevant standards, acts and regulations.Strong project management and technical skills to synthesize data and prepare reports.Demonstrated ability to identify issues and recommend innovative solutions.Demonstrated ability in the Region’s core competencies.Intermediate skills in virtual platforms and MS Office Suite including the use of virtual platforms for conducting meetings and/or presentations.Understanding of budgeting process, strategic planning, program development and implementation techniques.Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect with a range of internal and external stakeholders while focusing on fostering collaborative work relationships.Strong report writing, research, analytical and presentation skills and work to tight deadlines.Strong ability to develop relationships and work in a welcoming and inclusive environment, where diversity is celebrated and where everyone can develop to their full potential.Ability to work independently and with teams and with ability to manage competing priorities.Ability to travel to offsite locations, as required.Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required.
