The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is mainly located with the other Departments of Chemistry and Life Sciences in the Arrhenius Laboratories for Natural Sciences, which are situated in the northern part of the University Campus at Frescati. We are approximately 270 employees, that work at the Department, and are engaged in internationally highly recognized research covering a broad range of subjects.More information about us, please visit: The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.Main responsibilitiesThe work will consist of experimental studies of the neuronal networks of the brain. The techniques that will be used may include different forms of histochemistry (e.g. immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization) with subsequent evaluation in microscopes, recording and manipulation of neuronal activity, as well as assisting in behavioural animal experiments, and subsequent analysis of the data collected. You will initially work under the supervision of an experienced graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, with the aim that you will subsequently be able to perform the methods independently. Participation in common group activities (such as weekly meetings with scientific presentations) and responsibility that the laboratory and its equipment is maintained in good order are also part of the employment, as well as assisting in data analysis.Qualification requirementsThe successful applicant is motivated by a desire to work hands-on with neuroscientific questions in an international laboratory environment. Previous practical work in experimental neuroscience is a considerable advantage, and particular emphasis will be placed on experience of working with experimental animals. Priority will be given to applicants with experience in applying modern experimental neuroscience techniques such as electrophysiology, optogenetics, visualization of neuronal activity (e.g. by Ca2+ imaging) in brain and other neuronal tissues, and studies of animal behaviour. A university degree (BSc or MSc or equivalent) in biology/biomedicine, ideally with a specialization in neuroscience, is required.Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. You are expected to take responsibility and be attracted by problem-solving, and enjoy working in a position that requires considerable flexibility and an ability to communicate and work in a collegial manner. Your personal characteristics include a good sense of order and attention to detail.
