Size And Composition Of Your Current TeamWill be 9 people in the corss functional product teamRole ResponsibilitiesSanoma Learning is looking for a Data Scientist / AI Engineer to join our growing AI capability embedded within our product teams.
In this role, you will work on AI-powered features used by teachers and students across Europe, contributing to real products – not just experiments. As part of a cross-functional team, you will help design, implement, and optimize GenAI-enabled components, especially those involving LLMs, RAG pipelines, and AI agents, ensuring they deliver real educational value and operate reliably at scale. This is a hands-on role for a technically strong and product-minded professional eager to apply AI in meaningful ways.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Head of Data and AI, you’ll work closely with product managers, engineers, and designers, while also collaborating with other data scientists and AI experts across Sanoma Learning. Key Responsibilities Develop and maintain AI components both in prototypes and in production-facing digital products, including teacher tools, student apps, educational content platforms, AI tools for employees. Apply GenAI techniques such as large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and prompt engineering in real-world product use cases. Collaborate with engineers and designers to integrate AI into product workflows with strong UX, performance, and educational impact.
Ensure that AI features are robust, scalable, and cost-efficient, using techniques like prompt optimization, caching, and inference tuning. Contribute to shared tools, pipelines, and AI evaluation frameworks, helping Sanoma Learning scale its AI maturity. Work in alignment with MLOps standards for versioning, deployment, testing, and monitoring. Ensure compliance with privacy and safety standards, including GDPR and responsible AI guidelines. Continuously stay updated on GenAI tools and techniques, bringing innovation into your product area where relevant. Document solutions and participate in internal knowledge sharing across the data science and product community.
Must-have RequirementsEducation Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. Relevant certifications in AI/ML, cloud platforms, or MLOps are a plus. Experience 3–5 years of hands-on experience in AI engineering, machine learning, or applied data science roles. Practical experience deploying GenAI solutions, including work with LLMs, vector databases, and retrieval systems. Experience in cloud-native environments (e. g. , AWS/GCP/Azure), with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Airflow, or Prefect. Familiarity with LLM evaluation and prompt testing methodologies is a plus.
Understanding of data governance, privacy, and AI compliance (e. g. , GDPR). Prior experience in EdTech or digital publishing is beneficial but not required. Skills Solid understanding of transformer-based models and prompt engineering techniques. Proficiency in Python and experience with libraries such as LangChain, LangGraph, or OpenAI/Anthropic APIs. Familiarity with vector databases, embedding pipelines, and chunking strategies. Ability to develop agentic workflows and multi-step AI task execution. Working knowledge of MLOps, version control, and model deployment pipelines. Strong analytical thinking and experimentation mindset. Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional environments, with good written and verbal communication skills.
