Senior Ground Segment Engineer

ReOrbit is looking for a dynamic and experienced professional to join our Helsinki team in a crucial role where you will be responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and continuous improvement of ground segment systems supporting our missions.Your primary focus will be on ensuring the readiness, security, and reliability of ground stations, mission control infrastructure, and data flows. You will collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners to deliver robust ground segment solutions that meet mission requirements.This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This position is based in Helsinki, Finland.It's an exciting chance to join a dynamic start-up, with the opportunity to make a real impact, to reach our goal of pushing the boundaries of space data transfer.ResponsibilitiesGround Station Operations: Oversee the setup, configuration, Specification and operation of ground stations, including antenna systems, RF equipment, and network infrastructure.Mission Control Systems: Manage and maintain mission control software, automation tools, and interfaces for telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C).Data Flow & Security: Design and monitor secure data flows between ground stations, mission control, and downstream users, ensuring compliance with security requirements (e.g., telecommand validation, key management, configuration control).Operational Readiness: Develop and execute operational readiness tests, rehearsals, and validation activities for ground segment systems.Documentation: Prepare and maintain ground segment documentation, including Operations Concepts (ConOps), Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and risk assessments.Incident Response: Lead or support troubleshooting and resolution of ground segment anomalies, including participation in on-call rotations and anomaly review boards.External Coordination: Liaise with third-party ground network providers, manage service level agreements, and integrate external ground station services.Virtualization & Cloud: Support the deployment and management of virtualized ground segment environments and cloud-based mission operations infrastructure.Disaster Recovery: Ensure disaster resilience and business continuity for ground segment systems, including backup, recovery, and security protocols.Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement improvements in ground segment processes, automation, and operational efficiency.Skills And RequirementsUniversity degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., telecommunications, computer science, aerospace).Proven experience in ground segment engineering for satellite missions (LEO or GEO).Hands-on experience with ground station hardware, RF systems, and mission control software.Familiarity with secure data handling, telecommand validation, and key management.Experience with virtualized and/or cloud-based ground segment environments.Strong documentation skills (ConOps, ICDs, risk assessments).Ability to coordinate with external service providers and manage SLAs.Excellent troubleshooting and incident response skills.Proactive, adaptable, and able to work in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.Fluency in English is mandatory.Willingness to travel internationally up to 25% of the timePlanning, work package management, scheduling and coordination of activities.What does ReOrbit do?ReOrbit builds the foundation for the next generation of space applications by transforming satellites into truly intelligent, interconnected platforms, defined by software.
