Job Description

Job Purpose:The Research Development Senior Specialist is responsible for managing internal funding opportunities, supporting faculty and researchers in building research capacity, diversifying research funding, and communicating KU’s research impact to stakeholders. The role involves designing and implementing programs, policies, and initiatives that enhance research excellence and innovation while strengthening KU’s visibility and reputation as a leading research institution.Key Roles & Responsibilities:Internal Research Funding & GrantmakingManage internal research funding programs, as KU’s internal sponsor for grantmaking.Oversee internal funding opportunities aligned with KU’s strategic research priorities.Administer complete program cycles, including calls for proposals, application review, and award allocation.Manage the external peer review process to ensure fairness, transparency, and quality of funding decisions.Coordinate the handover of awarded projects to Research Operations for post-award management.External Funding DiversificationSupport to develop and implement strategies to increase KU’s success in securing funding from government agencies, industry, philanthropic organizations, and international funding bodies.Work in close collaboration with Research Operations to align internal and external funding strategies.Monitor trends, funding opportunities, and emerging partnerships to maximize research funding potential.Research Outreach & CommunicationWork on developing outreach and engagement initiatives to communicate KU’s research achievements and impact.Collaborate with the Communications Office to highlight success stories, research breakthroughs, and societal contributions.Strengthen KU’s visibility among policymakers, industry partners, funding agencies, and the broader community.Strategic Initiatives & Special ProjectsIdentify, design, and lead strategic initiatives that advance KU’s research agenda and align with institutional goals.Address emerging challenges and capitalize on new opportunities to strengthen KU’s regional and global research standing.Support cross-institutional initiatives that foster interdisciplinary research and innovation.Research Capacity BuildingProvide training, workshops, and resources to enhance faculty and researcher competencies in grant writing, research design, and impact assessment.Develop guidance materials and best practice tools to improve research competitiveness and funding success.Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration in research across KU.Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordinglyCoordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when neededDemonstrate a strong commitment and practice to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line ManagerQualifications & Experience:A Bachelor’s Degree in Research Management, Science/Engineering or related field.Work experience with research development, grant management, or research administration within a university, research institution, or funding agency.Knowledge of funding landscapes, impact assessment methodologies, and best practices in research management.A minimum 7 years of experience
