The Senior Project Director will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight to ensure all construction projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. Working collaboratively with the project delivery team, this role will be responsible for managing and developing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of accountability, communication, and excellence across all phases of project execution.The Senior Project Director will oversee multiple project managers, superintendents, and support staff, providing mentorship, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities to ensure consistent project delivery standards. This role will also play a key part in resource planning, workload distribution, and talent management to align staffing with project needs and company goals.In addition, the Senior Project Director will develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and other stakeholders, providing regular updates on project progress and proactively addressing challenges. They will report to and work collaboratively with the VP of Operations to establish, refine, and implement project management procedures and protocols that support Fortis’ commitment to quality, safety, and operational excellence.Responsibilities:Develop overall project strategy, objectives, and execution plansDefine project scope, goals, and deliverables in alignment with organizational objectivesOversee feasibility studies, risk assessments, and resource planningEstablish project governance structures and decision-making processesLead, mentor, and develop a team of project managers, superintendents, and support staff to ensure high-quality project deliveryEstablish clear goals, performance expectations, and accountability measures for all project team membersOversee staffing plans, resource allocation, and workload balancing across multiple active projectsConduct regular project team meetings to review progress, address challenges, and ensure alignment with project goals and schedulesOversee recruitment and provide coaching and professional development opportunities to strengthen leadership and technical skills within the project teamEvaluate team performance, conduct performance reviews, and implement improvement plans as neededPromote cross-functional collaboration among project management, field operations, estimating, and preconstruction teamsEnsure effective scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation across all project phasesApprove major project plans, changes, and milestoneMonitor progress against key performance indicators (KPIs)Develop and manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost-control strategiesNegotiate and approve major contracts, subcontracts, and procurement agreementsOversee financial reporting, claims management, and change ordersEnsure compliance with contract terms and financial objectivesServe as the primary liaison between clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teamsCommunicate project progress, risks, and issues to senior management and stakeholdersBuild and maintain strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and repeat businessEnsure adherence to health and safety standardsOversee quality assurance and control proceduresEnsure all construction activities comply with legal, regulatory, and industry standardsIdentify potential project risks and implement mitigation strategiesLead crisis management and problem-solving efforts when issues ariseEnsure proactive risk monitoring throughout the project life cycleFoster a collaborative and safety-conscious work cultureProvide executive-level project reports on schedule, cost, scope, and qualityMaintain comprehensive project documentation and recordsSupport post-project evaluation and lessons-learned initiativesOversee project completion, commissioning, and handover to the clientEnsure defects liability management and closeout documentation are completedSupport transition to operations or facilities management as requiredQualifications:Post-secondary diploma or degree in a related engineering or construction management disciplineMinimum 10 years of proven experience in project management from project pursuit to project closeout, overseeing commercial construction projects (hard bid, AFP and/or negotiated)Previous management experience within a mid – large general contractor; experience in a unionized environment an assetP.Eng and/or LEED certifications an assetAbility to read blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plansA solid understanding of all construction trades and construction techniquesKnowledge of local, provincial, and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances, and legislation, including OH&S regulations and Building CodesDemonstrated ability to exercise necessary cost control measures.Familiarity with Labour relations and collective agreement managementFamiliarity with project accounting systemsA valid class G Driver’s license and access to a vehicle is requiredAre you ready to come #BUILDSTRONG with team Fortis?!
