Job Description

The GIGA seeks to hire aStudent Assistant (m/f/d)to support the research project “Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalisation (MOTRA),” funded by BMFTR, for up to 10 hours per week, starting as soon as possible for 6 months with the possibility of extending the contract. The student assistant will be required to be physically present in Hamburg at least once every two weeks. Remuneration is based on the hourly rate for student assistants at the University of Hamburg and currently amounts to €13.98 (bachelor's student) / €16.05 (master's student) per hour.TasksCo-development of issues and stances to evaluate in German politics.Coding of X (formerly Twitter) posts by German politicians.Literature search and management using Zotero.Participation in script writing and programming.General RequirementsProficiency in German, ideally as a native language, and EnglishExcellent analytical and comparative skillsGood interpersonal skills and ability to work independentlyEnrolment as a student of political science, sociology, economics, criminology, or related disciplines at a German university (if BA; 3rd semester or higher starting in April 2025)Desired RequirementsFamiliarity with research on radicalisation and extremism (e.g., right-wing, left-wing, or islamist extremism)Experience with the collection, management and analysis of social media dataExperience with the collection, management, and analysis of survey dataKnowledge of Python and R or StataKnowledge of natural language processing (NLP) or other computational social science techniquesPlease send your application as one PDF file, including a brief motivation letter, a CV, and a transcript of records, via e-mail to Dr. Andrew Crawford no later than 10 December 2025.Further information on the MOTRA project can be found here.
