Job Description

Job DescriptionStuff is seeking a Live and Breaking Editor to help lead fast, accurate, and compelling coverage of national and international news as it unfolds. Working alongside the Chief Live and Breaking Editor, you’ll guide a team of reporters to deliver live content that’s sharp, audience-focused and platform-ready. This is a key role in shaping our real-time news offering. You’ll commission and edit breaking content, support major live events, and help develop new formats and work with AI tools to enhance how we report in the moment.

Collaboration across teams and a strong understanding of audience needs are essential. What You’ll Be DoingLeading the national live news agenda and delivering rapid, high-quality coverage of breaking and trending stories. Commissioning, producing, and editing content that resonates with and grows our audience. Supporting the team to break original stories and respond swiftly across platforms. Helping to deliver planned live coverage of major national events. Testing and rolling out new formats and AI tools in collaboration with other senior leaders. Sub-editing and publishing content, ensuring it meets the highest editorial standards.

Encouraging innovation in live storytelling, while upholding Stuff’s editorial code and Pou Tiaki commitments. Managing, mentoring and developing a team of reporters, helping them to thrive and meet their goals. Building strong relationships with editors across the newsroom to ensure cohesive coverage. What You’ll Bring To The RoleSignificant newsroom experience and proven leadership skills. Exceptional news judgement and the ability to make decisions quickly. A strong understanding of digital audiences and a commitment to audience-first journalism. Ability to commission, edit and elevate multi-platform content. Knowledge of media law and editorial best practice.

Confident in using data and metrics to shape content strategy. A collaborative, calm and solutions-focused approach, even under pressure. The ability to foster young talent and help others succeed.
