Job Description

Summer Student: Engineer - Digital PackagingBased om RotoruaApproximate dates - 1 December 2025 - 20 February 2026Scion specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader-based circular bioeconomy.Scion hosts a number of summer students, each with differing specialities, from tertiary institutes across New Zealand at both our Rotorua and Christchurch Campus. The programme involves a student completing a 12-week, full-time, research project under the direction of Scion supervisors (allowing time for holidays over the Christmas and New Year). Students are able to gain hands on, paid, work experience in the field of which they are studying, where they get to work shoulder to shoulder with Scion's internationally recognised staff. We are seeking a motivated student to work on our Vibration-induced Energy Harvesting for Packaging Integrity project. The Primary Objective Of The Work/projectThis project focuses on evaluating and improving vibration-induced energy harvesting devices for Smart packaging. Using Scion's hexapod shaker table, the student will simulate transport conditions to test prototypes that convert mechanical vibrations into electrical energy. The goal is to enhance device performance and reliability, contributing to Scion's vision of sustainable, battery-free packaging systems that improve supply chain monitoring and efficiency. The student will contribute by designing and executing experiments, analysing device performance, and identifying opportunities for design improvements to help advance Scion's circular bioeconomy innovations.Research AbstractSmart packaging with embedded sensors is transforming logistics by enabling monitoring of product conditions. While these technologies improve traceability and reduce waste, powering sensors sustainably remains a challenge. Vibration energy harvesting offers a promising solution by converting ambient motion into usable power. However, comprehensive testing under realistic transport conditions is limited. This project addresses that gap by using Scion's shaker table to evaluate prototype devices, supporting the development of renewable energy systems and advancing circular bioeconomy innovations. What The Student Will DoThe student will begin with a literature review to understand current approaches to energy harvesting and Smart packaging. Based on this, they will develop a structured workplan outlining test scenarios and evaluation methods. Using Scion's shaker table, they will conduct controlled vibration experiments to simulate freight conditions, test device prototypes, and refine designs to improve energy capture. The student will work with mechanical components, sensors, and data acquisition systems, and collaborate with Scion researchers throughout the project. The internship will conclude with a final report and presentation summarising findings, design improvements, and potential applications. This internship will provide the student opportunity to collaborate with highly respected researchers that working to improve New Zealand's primary industries, and will give with valuable experience in experimental design, mechanical and electronic prototyping, and data analysis — preparing them for future roles in engineering and applied research.Qualifications, Skills And Attributes NeededCurrently studying Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering.Essential SkillsMechanical design using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor) and rapid prototyping tools (e.g., 3D printing)Electronics and embedded systems: circuit design, breadboarding, PCB layout, and microcontroller programming (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi)Data acquisition and analysis: ability to collect, interpret, and present experimental data effectivelyKey AttributesSelf-motivated and proactiveAble to work independently and within a multidisciplinary teamStrong problem-solving and troubleshooting skillsClear communication and documentation abilitiesThis position will be located in Rotorua.Applications Close - 12 September 2025
