Job Description

3- year PhD position ISO2CARE: Silicate weathering as CO2 sinkatInstitute of Applied Geosciences TU Graz (Austria)FWF-Project Start 01. 10. 2025: Details & application through (Deadline 15. 10. 2025):  https: //jobs. tugraz. at/de/jobs/c08579e4-5aa6-7e51-b4e6-6877cd6f99f5The project aims to elucidate the fundamental processes and kinetics of silicate weathering using Si isotopes as tracers. It seeks to understand how parameters such as temperature, pH, pCO2, Si concentration, and organic ligands affect kinetic and equilibrium Si isotope fractionation during the dissolution and formation of amorphous Si phases.

A main goal is to determine how changes in these parameters impact reaction products and isotope exchange kinetics. By combining experimental and theoretical approaches with a proof of concept in natural settings, the project aims to assess Si isotope compositions to evaluate silicate weathering and CO2consumption. This research is crucial for understanding and predicting weathering processes and their role in the global carbon cycle, especially in the context of climate change and potential carbon sequestration strategies. Responsibilities-     Design of experimental studies on amorphous silicon phases and their transformation(FWF-Project https: //online. tugraz. at/tug_online/fdb_detail.
