RECLAIM Project – Reusing excavated crushed rocks as innovative materialsFróðskaparsetur Føroya – the University of the Faroe Islands – invites applications for a PhD position in civil engineering as part of the RECLAIM research project. The University of the Faroe Islands is the primary higher education and research institution in the Faroe Islands, the nation’s only university and its foremost knowledge centre. The University undertakes research and research-based teaching, providing for synergy between research and teaching to serve the evolving needs and priorities of the Faroes and their wider region.
About the PositionThe RECLAIM project addresses the urgent need to reduce reliance on imported aggregates by evaluating the potential of locally excavated rock for use in construction. The Faroe Islands currently rely heavily on imported aggregates for civil engineering applications such as roads and buildings. These aggregates are transported by ship, resulting in high CO₂ emissions and increasing the vulnerability of infrastructure projects to external supply chain disruptions. Meanwhile, large quantities of basalt are excavated locally during tunnel construction, but only a small portion is used in construction.
This PhD project aims to address this challenge by exploring how locally sourced rocks can be effectively characterized, tested, and used as a reliable construction material. The candidate will investigate the rocks with a multidisciplinary approach, including geological methods like thin sections, civil engineering methods like Micro Dewal test and experimental concrete and asphalt testing. Additional AI will be applied for classification and prediction of material properties. The expected outcome is a scientifically validated and practical framework for integrating Faroese rocks into construction practice, promoting a more sustainable and resilient built environment.
This PhD position is ideal for candidates with a background in civil engineering, geoscience, or materials science, and an interest in sustainable infrastructure and interdisciplinary research. Your profileMaster’s degree in civil engineering, materials science, geology or a related fieldBasic knowledge of geology is requiredInterest or some ability in AI-based data analysis is advantageousProficiency in English is required, while previous knowledge of Faroese or a related Nordic language is desirable, but not mandatory.
