ContextThe World Health Organization (WHO), a global leader in public health since 1948, is committed to ensuring health for all through science-driven programs and coordinated international efforts. WHO works to expand universal health coverage, lead responses to health emergencies, and promote healthier lives worldwide. As part of its mandate, WHO is implementing the Sudan Health Assistance Response to Emergencies (SHARE) project to address critical health needs and sustain core public health functions in Sudan.
Given Sudan's extreme vulnerability to climate change and its low capacity for adaptation, WHO is focusing efforts on enhancing the climate resilience of the country’s health system through targeted contingency planning and risk assessments at health facilities. Description of DutiesThe Climate Change Expert will support WHO’s Project Management Unit in executing climate-related interventions under the SHARE and SHEIP projects. Key responsibilities include:
Delivering outputs aligned with WHO’s commitments and partner agreementsConducting vulnerability and impact assessments for hospitals and public health facilitiesDeveloping action and contingency plans for climate risks such as floods and heatwavesOverseeing the implementation of climate resilience activitiesReviewing climate hazard impacts and recommending mitigation measuresBuilding awareness and leading stakeholder communication on climate risksFacilitating capacity-building initiatives, trainings, and workshops on climate and healthSupporting data collection, analysis, and knowledge sharingPerforming other related tasks as assigned by the supervisorProfile RequirementsBachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Climate Change, or related fieldsAt least 5 years of relevant experience, particularly in health facility assessments, climate planning, and emergency preparednessProven ability to develop contingency and preparedness plansStrong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skillsFluent in English; proficiency in Arabic is desirableSolid computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams)Experience with the UN or similar international organizations is a plusAbility to work under pressure in multicultural, fast-paced environmentsSelf-motivated and able to manage tasks independently with tight deadlinesApplication deadline is 28 July 2025
