An open letter to politicians: What about our children?
Dear politicians,
Child sexual abuse should never be a matter of politics or mudslinging. It should never be reduced to campaign talking points, partisan blame, or empty promises.
The safety of our nation’s children is not a red issue, a yellow issue, a black issue, or a green issue — it is a human rights issue.
As you parade through our communities — shaking hands, giving handouts, hosting link-ups, photo ops, walkabouts, and rallies — we, the people, have one urgent, piercing question: What is your plan to protect the children of The Bahamas from sexual predators?
We do not care about your colorful shirts, your catchy slogans, or your loudspeakers promising “A Better Bahamas.”
The better Bahamas we seek begins with the safety of our sons and daughters — the innocent, the voiceless, the vulnerable.
Every day, our news headlines are stained with stories of child sexual abuse. Each report is another scar on the soul of this nation. Yet, your responses remain muted, recycled, and ineffective.
We are sick and tired of the raping of our children. Sick of the excuses. Sick of the bureaucracy. Sick of the endless “under investigation” headlines that fade away with no justice, no reform, and no accountability.
Hope is not enough. Speeches are not enough. Committees are not enough.
We demand a zero-tolerance policy enshrined in law — not just words on paper, but decisive, uncompromising action that strips away every privilege and protection from those who commit these vile acts. Prison time alone is not justice.
It is time for stronger legislative measures. We demand a permanent, publicly accessible sex offender registry.
We demand lifetime bans from working or volunteering around minors.
We demand mandatory rehabilitation, counseling, and long-term support for survivors and their families.
Furthermore, we demand that predators pay for the full cost of psychological and therapy services for every victim they have harmed.
To those campaigning for leadership, we ask again: What is your vision for protecting our children? What concrete measures will your party enact to prevent sexual abuse before it happens? What systems will you create to support victims — not only in the immediate aftermath but throughout their lifelong journey toward healing?
We want protection. We demand protection. We will no longer remain silent while predators roam free and our children live in fear.
The future of The Bahamas does not lie in political colors. It lies in the eyes of every Bahamian child who deserves to grow up safe, whole, and unafraid. Your campaigns mean nothing if our children are not protected.
This is your call to action. The time for talking is over. Protect our children — or lose the moral right to lead this country.
