PHOTOS: B.C. roller derby league surpasses fundraising goal at tournament

A Chilliwack-based roller derby league surpassed its fundraising goal of $2,000 for a local charity following an international tournament. NWO Roller Derby Association hosted its annual Daze of Derby event, a fundraiser tournament that saw 16 teams from Western Canada and the U.S. go toe-to-toe on Oct. 25 and 26 at the Landing Sports Centre. The event brought in $2,391.68 for Chilliwack’s Gender Support Network. “That’s the most we have ever raised in a single tournament,” said Kristy Gaunt with NWO. Funds raised came from the skaters’ entry fees, a 50/50 draw, a special “hi-jinx” scrimmage, by-donation admission, and massages being offered by Langara College students, which were also by donation. Last year, the fundraiser brought in about $1,500.
