Footy club suspended from Perth league after ‘Silly Sunday’ costume controversy

A statement released on Tuesday afternoon, following the Perth Football League’s board meeting the day prior, said the club would be suspended for two years for the “severe breach” of the league’s integrity standards. PFL chief executive Andrew Dawe said the incident exposed deep governance and leadership failures at Osborne Park Football Club. “A two-year suspension reflects the severity of the breach, and gives the club time to rebuild governance capability, re-engage with the City of Stirling to see if they can find a home for the club and time to demonstrate considerable reform before the possibility of returning to the competition,” he said. Osborne Park Football Club was invited to provide a submission to the board, the statement read, but failed to do so. When the news emerged in early October, club president Jeremy LaBianca released a statement saying the club was “really embarrassed that we allowed this to happen and that we didn’t intervene on the day”.

Europe’s STOXX 600 slides on global risk-off mood, mixed earnings

European shares fell on Tuesday to the lowest point in more than two weeks, echoing a broader risk-off mood across global markets, as investors gauged a mixed bag of earnings reports. The pan-European STOXX 600 index was down 1.2% at 565.73 points, as of 0813 GMT, with all major bourses in the red. European stocks started the month on a tepid note after recording gains for four consecutive months, as investors weighed multiple prevailing risks. The lack of official US data due to an ongoing US government shutdown has clouded the outlook for Federal Reserve’s rate cuts, while traders are increasingly nervous about the multiple deals struck between major players in the artificial intelligence space. Back home, corporate third-quarter earnings were also in full swing. Shares of Edenred slid 8.5% after the French vouchers and benefit cards provider projected its annual core profit growth to slow down in 2026. Geberit gained 2.2% after the Swiss plumbing materials maker nudged its full-year sales outlook higher. In the UK, BP reported a smaller-than-expected drop in third-quarter underlying profit, though its shares were trading little changed.

Revanth Reddy Seeks Germany’s Assistance to Make Telangana Hub for Innovation

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy here on Tuesday sought the assistance of Germany for making Telangana a hub for innovation. He said this while interacting with a delegation from Germany led by its German Consul General Michael Hosper. He also sought help from the delegation in appointing teachers to teach German language to students in the city. The Chief Minister said that Telangana wants German partnership in investing in the State and requested German companies to invest in IT, pharma, and automobile sectors. He also urged cooperation in providing training in vocational education and skill work through TOMCOM. The delegation explained to the Chief Minister that Deutsche Borse is launching its Global Capability Center (GCC) in Hyderabad on Tuesday as part of its expansion. Revanth Reddy thanked the delegation for choosing Hyderabad for the establishment of GCC and added that more investments should be made in Hyderabad, and the State government would fully support this and provide all kinds of assistance. The delegation explained to the Chief Minister that with the establishment of the GCC, as many as 1,000 people will get jobs and employment opportunities in the IT sector in the next two years.

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has revealed there are already players who are looking for an opportunity to represent the senior women's national team. Bjorkegren's side has comprised players who grew up in Ghana before jetting off abroad, as well as players of dual citizenship committing to represent the West African country. Abigail Kofi Kim, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Josephine Bonsu are players of dual citizenship who have chosen to represent the Black Queens in recent times. Quizzed on beefing up his team for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following their qualification, Bjorkegren revealed he and his technical team are already on the lookout for talents. "We have so many good players in Ghana and a little bit everywhere, I will say. There are some players who are already abroad and are already knocking on the door [to play for the Black Queens]," he told Joy Sports. "But we also have many local players who are doing so well. I am looking forward to being more involved in the local leagues and local football to connect more with the coaches here because they are doing the most important job for us. "If they do a good job, it will help the national team in the future. We see the Black Princesses are doing pretty well as well." The Black Queens will need to be at their best at the 2026 WAFCON tournament to be staged in Morocco, as it will also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Coalition tried to cut its climate losses – the result is predictably gory

In her book Plots and Prayers, Niki Savva writes about a Coalition cabinet meeting that took place just before Malcolm Turnbull’s overthrow in 2018. When discussion turned to the National Energy Guarantee (NEG) – Turnbull and Josh Frydenberg’s bid to cut emissions while keeping energy affordable – Christopher Pyne argued: “We can keep dragging our bloodied stump across the political firmament, leaving a trail of gore behind us, or we can cut our losses and move on [from the NEG].” The Liberal Party’s choice of Scott Morrison to replace Turnbull and his subsequent election victory might have been seen as vindication for Pyne’s view, except that the bleeding and the losses continued. Voters in urban Liberal heartlands, unconvinced by Morrison’s approach to climate change, turned to teal independents, turfing out Frydenberg and other moderate Liberals. That Morrison and his deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce, had eventually committed the Coalition to a policy of net zero emissions by 2050 was offset by their defeat in the 2022 election.

BREAKING: Rachel Reeves refuses to rule out manifesto-breaking Autumn Budget tax hikes

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has refused to stand by Labour's election vow not to hike income tax, VAT or national insurance at the Budget. It came as Ms Reeves used a rare pre-Budget speech to say "each must do our bit" to build the Britain of a future and "contribute to that effort". Appearing to lay the ground for tax hikes on November 26, Ms Reeves said she will "not always do what is popular - but do what is right". But the Chancellor said she will make the "choices necessary" including protecting the NHS and reducing the cost of living for struggling Brits. Asked about Labour's election vow - not to increase taxes on working people, including income tax, VAT and national insurance - Ms Reeves replies: "I will set out the individual policies at the Budget on 26 November, that is not what today is about." She added: "As Chancellor I have to face the world as it is, not the world as I want it to be. And when challenges come our way, the only question is how to respond to them, not whether to respond or not. " During the speech before the markets opened, Ms Reeves said the Tories' austerity slashing programme had dealt a "hammer blow" to the country alongside a "rushed and ill-conceived Brexit". She said it was her job to be "honest about the consequences those choices have had" and to get inflation falling in the coming months. "Those who continue to push for easy answers are irresponsible now," she added. Courts block deportation of Indian man wrongly imprisoned for 43 years

Two separate courts have ordered immigration officials not to deport an Indian-origin man who spent four decades in prison before his murder conviction was overturned.Subramanyam Vedam, 64, is currently detained at a short-term holding centre in Alexandria, Louisiana, that's equipped with an airstrip for deportations. Vedam, known as 'Subu', was transferred there from central Pennsylvania last week, relatives said.An immigration judge stayed his deportation on Thursday until the Bureau of Immigration Appeals decides whether to review his case. That could take several months.Vedam's lawyers also got a stay the same day in the US District Court in Pennsylvania, but said that case may be on hold given the immigration court ruling.Vedam came to the US legally from India as an infant and grew up in State College, where his father taught at Penn State. He was serving a life sentence in a friend's 1980 death before his conviction was overturned this year.He was released from state prison on October 3, only to be taken straight into immigration custody.The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is seeking to deport Vedam over his no contest plea to charges of LSD delivery, filed when he was about 20. The agents, according to the Chicago Tribune, crashed into Dayanne Figueroa's car as they sped away from a hostile crowd of protesters. Several agents are seen emerging from the vehicle, guns drawn, and dragging Figueroa out of her car. She was on her way to get coffee. Hours later she was released without charges. Kidnapping Trump is now claiming that any polls that don't show him soaring in popularity are "fake". In reality, his polls hit a record low this week, with a measly 37% approval rating. Worker trapped under collapsed medieval tower in Rome dies

Parts of the 29-metre (95 ft) Torre dei Conti crashed to the ground at around 1030 GMT on Monday and a second collapse followed 90 minutes later, videos posted on social media and Reuters video showed. Clouds of dust came billowing out of the windows to the sound of collapsing masonry. The second incident took place while firefighters were working on the structure with aerial ladders. The man was pulled out of the tower by emergency services late on Monday, after about 11 hours, but was in a state of cardiac arrest when he arrived at the hospital and was declared dead early on Tuesday, a hospital statement said. "Despite the sustained efforts of the medical teams in Rome, Octav Stroici, who had been trapped under the rubble of a historic building undergoing restoration works, has sadly passed away," the Romanian Foreign Ministry said on X. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed her condolences. A second worker, also Romanian, was pulled out almost immediately and hospitalised with serious but not life-threatening head injuries, while two more workers suffered minor injuries and declined hospital treatment. None of the firefighters were injured. Jarvis: Open enrollment could come with sticker shock

Americans embarking on the annual task of sifting through the health plans offered by their employers to find the one that gives them the most bang for their buck are facing a new reality: many of those options no longer feel affordable. This year, the process isn’t just complex or confusing — it’s painful. The cost of health insurance for the roughly 165 million Americans under the age of 65 who receive their coverage through work is expected to increase by 6.5%, according to a recent employer survey by Mercer. That’s the biggest annual jump in 15 years. And while many employers absorbed rising benefit costs during the pandemic — a period marked by high worker stress and a tight labor market — most are now passing those costs back to their employees, even adding more on top. This year, workers are already responsible for about $6,850 of the nearly $27,000 total cost of a family premium, up 6% over 2024, according to a new analysis from KFF. The even steeper increases expected in 2026 will hit Americans’ paychecks at a time when they are already struggling with higher grocery bills, housing, utilities and other basic expenses. Yet, so far, the health-policy changes coming out of Washington do little to ease that financial strain. Instead, the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to Medicaid and its unwillingness to maintain enhanced subsidies enacted during the pandemic for Affordable Care Act plans could further intensify cost pressures throughout the health care system. So, how did we get here? Health care costs are being driven by rising wages for doctors, nurses and other health professionals, along with a period of intense consolidation among providers and hospitals. Meanwhile, more people are visiting doctors more frequently — due in part to an aging workforce and also better access, particularly for mental health services delivered via telehealth. In addition, health care budgets continue to be strained by the high cost of prescription drugs. Employer surveys across the board show that increased use of expensive obesity drugs known as GLP-1s has become the biggest concern. A new survey from KFF found that 64% of large firms say the treatments have “moderately” or “significantly” impacted their prescription drug costs. And while about 43% of large employers now cover GLP-1s, many are tightening eligibility requirements — or even dropping coverage for weight loss altogether. Unfortunately, none of the factors driving up costs seem likely to fade anytime soon. President Donald Trump recently announced several deals with major pharmaceutical firms aimed at lowering prescription drug prices, but they are unlikely to have much impact on people with private insurance. And although he has said negotiations are underway to lower the monthly cost of GLP-1s to $150, no such deal has materialized. “It’s a big concern when that big of a chunk of federal funding comes out of the health system,” says Sara Collins, a senior scholar at the Commonwealth Fund, a nonprofit foundation focused on health care research. For example, not only do hospitals depend on that funding, but they will also need to manage the rise in uncompensated care from millions of newly uninsured Americans coming through their doors seeking treatment. Some of those costs could ultimately be passed on to private insurers through tougher negotiations over the prices hospitals charge for their services. Employers grappling with these higher costs have two choices: take the hit themselves or pass some or all of it on to their employees. While many companies absorbed those costs during the pandemic, now “we’re seeing employers say, ‘Whoa, something’s got to give,’” says Beth Umland, director of employer research for health and benefits at Mercer. The best people can do is carefully review the options available to find a plan that fits their family’s needs. That might feel overwhelming — especially as the trend among employers is to offer more, not fewer plans, in an effort to ensure everyone can find something affordable, says Umland. Still, if there ever was a time to slow down and weigh all the options, “this would be the year to do it,” she says. “It’s very likely that the plan you’re in right now has changed.” Some people might notice a hike in their premiums, while others should look at the fine print of their plan to understand where costs might be hiding. More employers this year are implementing cost-sharing measures at the point of service — whether through higher deductibles, new or increased co-pays, or higher out-of-pocket maximums, she says. Many are passing along the full increase in costs, and some are even asking employees to contribute more to make up for the COVID years. Workers might also encounter newer coverage designs intended to save them money. Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plans, which limit the number of covered providers by focusing on those considered to deliver higher-quality care, are becoming an increasingly popular addition. But EPOs come with an important caveat: out-of-network providers aren’t covered at all. That means anyone considering one should take a close look at whether their current physicians are part of the network. Still, for certain health care consumers — say, a healthy, recent college graduate who rarely needs medical care — that narrower network option could be a great way to lower their costs. Without stronger federal attention to policies targeting the underlying drivers of rising costs — such as consolidation and escalating service prices — open enrollment sticker shock will become an annual event. And consumers and companies alike will remain stuck trying to manage increasingly burdensome health care expenses, forcing them to make tougher choices every year about one of our most essential needs. The news emerges just weeks after Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman shocked fans by revealing they would be departing at the end of this series. BBC executives are said to believe that The One Show's Alex Jones and The Chase favourite Bradley Walsh would make an ideal pairing to succeed Tess and Claudia. Tess and Claudia revealed they were leaving the ballroom extravaganza last month. At the time, the duo released a joint statement explaining their choice to fans, reports the Mirror . The statement read: "We have loved working as a duo and hosting Strictly has been an absolute dream. We were always going to leave together and now feels like the right time." They added. "We will have the greatest rest of this amazing series and we just want to say an enormous thank you to the BBC and to every single person who works on the show." Alex previously took part in the BBC programme in 2011 but departed the dance contest a week prior to the finale. She had been paired with professional dancer James Jordan. An insider revealed to The Sun: "Alex and Bradley are both the favourites to take over from Tess and Claudia.
