Speaker Bagbin urges new MPs to serve with dedication and integrity
BY VALENTIA TETTEH
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged newly elected Members of Parliament to diligently discharge their duties with humility and a commitment to continuous learning.
He made the call during the swearing-in ceremony of the new MPs for Akwatia and Tamale Central, held in Parliament on Tuesday.
The Speaker emphasized that effective parliamentary work requires the right mindset and preparation, likening it to a farmer going to the field with essential tools.
“In order to discharge your duties effectively, you need a cutlass and a hoe, because, as a farmer, you cannot go to your farm without them,” he said.
Drawing from his over 33 years of parliamentary experience, Rt. Hon. Bagbin revealed that he still refers daily to the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament, underscoring the importance of continuous learning.
“Whether you are a professor, a farmer, or from any background, you have entered a new school, and that school starts from crèche. Do not assume you already know everything; begin learning anew,” he advised.
The Speaker also urged the new MPs to respect their senior colleagues in the House and to seek guidance from them as they navigate their parliamentary responsibilities.
The newly sworn-in lawmakers, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, representing the Akwatia Constituency, and Professor Alidu Seidu, representing Tamale Central, took the oath of office administered by the Speaker.
Bernard Bediako Baidoo won the Akwatia by-election, polling 18,199 votes to succeed the late Ernest Yaw Kumi.
In Tamale Central, Professor Alidu Seidu was declared winner of the by-election after running unopposed, following the tragic death of the former MP, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
Both MPs, who represent the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have officially assumed their duties as Members of Parliament.
With their swearing-in, the total number of Ghana’s legislators now stands at 276.
