Today, in Kanker district, under the ‘Puna Margem – From Rehabilitation to Revival’ initiative, 21 Naxalites have abandoned the path of violence and surrendered. This is a meaningful testament to the success of our ‘Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy – 2025’ and the ‘Niyad Nella Nar Scheme,’ which is fostering a new wave of trust and transformation in Naxal-affected areas.” (ANI)

Trump's charm offensive in Asia sends Nikkei 225 to record heights

Bangkok, Oct 29 (AP) Shares were mostly higher Wednesday in Asia as Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index surged more than 2 per cent to another record. US futures were mixed and oil prices were little changed. US President Donald Trump has been touring Asia and his upbeat comments on relations with major economies like Japan and China have helped fuel rallies while US stocks have pushed further into record heights. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 2.4 per cent at 51,410.40. After a charm offensive in Japan that culminated in USD 490 billion in investment commitments, President Donald Trump met with South Korea’s leader on Wednesday, though a trade deal with that country appeared more elusive. Still, South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.2 per cent to 4,058.37. The Shanghai Composite index was up 0.5 per cent at 4,006.21. It has been trading near decade highs ahead of Trump’s expected meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of a regional summit in South Korea. Trump and Xi have been locked in an escalating trade war, with Washington imposing high tariffs and tightened technology controls and China retaliating with curbs on rare earth shipments, one of its key sources of leverage. The fact that a meeting is planned suggests there is room for some progress in easing tensions, experts say. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 1 per cent to 8,926.20 after the release of higher than expected inflation data, an annual rate of 3.2 per cent, dashed hopes for an interest rate cut anytime soon. Taiwan’s Taiex gained 1.2 per cent and India’s Sensex was up 0.3 per cent. On Tuesday, the US stock market pushed further into record heights. The S&P 500 added 0.2 per cent to 6,890.89. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3 per cent to 47,706.37, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.8 per cent to 23,827.49. All three indexes set all-time highs for a third straight day. Wall Street is waiting for a few events that could shake things up. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve will announce its latest move on interest rates, while some of the stock market’s most influential companies will report how much profit they made during the summer. Investors expect the Fed to announce a rate cut given the slowing job market. It would be the second time this year that it’s lowered the federal funds rate in hopes of helping the job market. United Parcel Service rallied 8 per cent Tuesday after delivering stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. PayPal climbed 3.9 per cent after saying it made a bigger profit during the summer than analysts expected. It also said it plans to pay its shareholders a dividend every three months, while announcing a deal where internet users will be able to pay for purchases through OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Skyworks Solutions climbed 5.8 per cent after saying it would merge with Qorvo in a cash-and-stock deal where Skyworks shareholders will own roughly 63 per cent of the combined company, valued at USD 22 billion. Qorvo’s stock rose nearly as much, 5.7 per cent. Microsoft was one of the strongest forces lifting the market after rising 2 per cent. That sent the company’s total value on Wall Street above USD 4 trillion. On the losing end of Wall Street was Royal Caribbean, which lost 8.5 per cent despite reporting a stronger profit than analysts expected. Its revenue for the latest quarter fell short of expectations. Homebuilder D.R. Horton sank 3.2 per cent after reporting a weaker profit for the summer than analysts expected. Amazon, meanwhile, rose 1 per cent after saying it will cut about 14,000 corporate jobs, or about 4 per cent of its corporate workforce, as it ramps up spending on artificial intelligence while cutting costs elsewhere. In other dealings early Wednesday, US benchmark crude oil inched up 2 cents to USD 60.17 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, also rose 2 cents, to USD 63.85 a barrel. The US dollar rose to 152.36 Japanese yen from 152.11 yen. The euro slipped to USD 1.1631 from USD 1.1651. (AP) GRS GRS

Two arrested in Odisha over Kolkata murder case

Kolkata, Oct 29 (PTI) Kolkata Police on Wednesday arrested two persons from neighbouring Odisha for their alleged involvement in the murder of a young man in a hotel in the metropolis, an officer said. The two accused, identified as Shashikant Behera and Santosh Behera, were nabbed from Sambalpur. “We are trying to determine the motive behind the killing. The duo is being questioned,” he said, adding they would be brought to West Bengal on transit remand. Last week, the body of one person, identified as Rahul Lal, was found in a storage compartment in a hotel room in the Park Street area of Kolkata. Preliminary investigation suggested he was strangled to death with a bedsheet. Investigators linked the killing to Sambalpur through leads from the deceased’s Aadhaar card and mobile phone number. Lal had a criminal background and was previously arrested for theft and fraud, he said. “Multiple cases were registered against him at the Park Street police station. He was allegedly involved in selling stolen goods, including antique items, to interstate smuggling networks for hefty profits,” he said. Police suspect that Lal had recently acquired a valuable stolen artifact and had arranged a meeting with members of an Odisha-based smuggling ring to negotiate its sale. “The hotel room was booked for that meeting. Investigators suspect he was murdered and the artifact stolen. A search is on to trace the item and identify others involved in the crime,” he added. PTI SCH ACD

Cyclone Montha: Waterlogging in Hyderabad, heavy rainfall in districts

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], October 29 (ANI): After Cyclone Montha made landfall off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, parts of Hyderabad experienced waterlogging due to heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall was reported in parts of Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar districts. The parts of Rangareddy district also witnessed rainfall due to the cyclone’s impact across Telangana. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a likelihood of heavy rainfall over eastern and southern Telangana, which is expected to extend to neighbouring areas on Wednesday due to the impact of Cyclone Montha. As a result, the weather in Hyderabad, the state capital, changed abruptly today, and the city experienced rainfall.Meanwhile, Cyclone Montha crossed the coast near Narasapuram, between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, at around midnight between 11:32 PM and 12:30 AM, and has since moved northwestward, said Dr Karuna Sagar, a scientist at the Meteorological Department in Amaravati. The IMD scientist also mentioned that it will continue moving north-northwestward and enter Telangana.“The severe cyclonic storm over central Bengal moved west-northwestwards and it crossed yesterday over Andhra Pradesh coast, especially south of the Kakinada, near to the Narsapur, So it crossed around midnight, 11.30 to 12.30, and further it moved northwestwards and it weakened into the cyclonic storm by 2.30 a.m. of today. So it will continue towards moving the north-northwestwards, and it will enter into the Telangana region also, we are expecting like that,” Sagar told ANI. In addition to Telangana, Andhra Pradesh is also experiencing the impact of Cyclone Montha, with water overflowing onto the road connecting Bapatla to Suryalanka and disrupting traffic movement towards Suryalanka Beach. Bapatla RDO Gloria, MRO Saleema, and Deputy MPDO are currently inspecting the situation. Sagar, while discussing the weather of Andhra Pradesh, indicated that a red warning has been issued for several districts, including Nellore, Nandyal, Prakasham, Palnadu, NTR, and Guntur. Neighbouring districts such as Bapatla, Krishna, Eluru, and West Godavari are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Hence, an orange warning has been issued for the neighbouring districts. In Rayalseema, heavy rain is expected.“Since already heavy rainfall happened, extremely heavy rainfall happened, even today, small amount of rainfall also caused a lot of damage. So that’s why we are giving red warning to these districts, Nellore, Nandyal, Prakasham, Palnadu, NTR, and Guntur districts. The neighbouring districts like Bapatla, Krishna, Ellore, West Godavari, we are expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall. So that’s why we are giving orange warning. The remaining northern districts, we are expecting one or two places heavy rainfall. Even in the southern districts, like Rayalseema, the completely southern districts, we can expect heavy rainfall,” said Sagar. (ANI)

India to emerge as global refining and energy hub: Hardeep Singh Puri

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], October 28 (ANI): India’s petroleum and energy sector is undergoing a transformative expansion, poised to play a defining role in shaping the global energy future, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, on Tuesday.Addressing the inaugural session of the Energy Technology Meet in Hyderabad today, he stated that India’s energy journey reflects remarkable progress, driven by visionary policy frameworks, rapid innovation, and sustained investment across refining, biofuels, and green energy.According to a release by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, the Minister noted that while the global energy market is expected to grow at a slow pace–with several refineries worldwide facing closure–India stands out as a bright spot, projected to contribute nearly 30-33 per cent of global energy demand growth in the coming decades. He pointed out that India’s refining capacity currently stands at about 258 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and is on track to reach around 310 MMTPA by 2030, with long-term plans to scale further to 400-450 MMTPA.This expansion, he said, will consolidate India’s position among the top three refining hubs globally as around 20 per cent of existing global refining capacity–over 100 refineries–faces potential closure by 2035.Highlighting India’s achievements in biofuel blending, Puri said that the country had advanced from a 5 per cent target in 2006 to achieving 10 per cent ethanol blending five months ahead of schedule in 2022. Building on this success, the Government preponed the target for 20 per cent blending from 2030 to 2025-26. The Minister underlined that well-designed policies and robust support systems have enabled such accelerated achievements, demonstrating India’s capability to set and meet ambitious energy goals.Puri also observed that India’s refineries are world-class, globally integrated, and export-ready. India is already the fourth-largest refining nation and among the top seven exporters of petroleum products, exporting to more than 50 countries worth over USD 45 billion in FY 2024-25.The refining sector, he added, contributes nearly one-fifth of the country’s revenue, with both public and private entities showing strong financial and operational performance. Domestic petroleum consumption has increased from around 5 million barrels per day in 2021 to about 5.6 million barrels per day currently and is expected to touch 6 million barrels per day soon, supported by India’s robust economic growth and rising per capita income.Referring to the growing integration of petrochemicals with refining, Puri said that India’s petrochemical utilisation is still only about one-third of the global average, offering significant potential for growth. The petrochemical intensity index has already risen from 7.7 per cent to 13%, reflecting the sector’s upward trajectory. He emphasised that new refinery expansions are being planned as integrated petrochemical complexes to enhance efficiency, value addition, and export competitiveness. The Minister also underlined the importance of innovation and indigenisation in the energy ecosystem. He said that India has achieved nearly 80 per cent import substitution across the energy value chain. While acknowledging that certain critical components, such as catalysts and specialised equipment, continue to be imported, he emphasised the need for a balanced approach to Atmanirbharata, focusing on efficiency and global competitiveness rather than complete self-containment.He added that the government has initiated the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and established a National Centre for Catalyst Research to promote R&D and domestic manufacturing in key energy technologies.Speaking about green energy, Puri noted that India’s progress in green hydrogen has been particularly promising. Recent tenders by IOCL and HPCL have reduced the price of green hydrogen from around USD 5.5/kg to nearly USD 4/kg, marking a major step toward commercial viability. He said that green hydrogen, natural gas, and biofuels will be central to India’s energy transition, with the Global Biofuels Alliance expected to catalyse international trade and adoption of biofuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).Puri stressed that India’s energy strategy encompasses both fuel and petrochemical growth as part of a calibrated transition toward sustainability. He said that while the share of traditional fuels will gradually reduce, they will continue to play a major role for decades as India moves toward its 2047 goals. Simultaneously, the share of natural gas in the energy mix is being raised from 6 per cent to 15 per cent, green hydrogen is being scaled up, and renewables are expanding rapidly–all underlining India’s commitment to meeting its climate goals without compromising energy security.Recalling India’s historic refining legacy, from the first refinery at Digboi in 1901 to today’s global-scale facilities, the Minister said that post-2014 reforms and ecosystem strengthening have unlocked a new era of growth and innovation. He highlighted ongoing projects such as the Barmer Refinery and Andhra Refinery as key examples of the sector’s forward momentum. With over 100 biogas plants operational and 70 more in the pipeline, he said that India is building an ecosystem that connects technology, investment, and sustainability.Puri concluded that as India advances toward becoming a USD 10 trillion economy, its energy sector will not only meet domestic requirements but also serve global markets. The Minister expressed confidence that by 2035, India will move from being the world’s fourth-largest to possibly the second-largest refining power. He emphasised that India’s young demography, rising energy demand, and proactive policy environment will ensure that the country not only participates in but actively shapes the global energy future. West Bengal CEO assures no genuine voter's name will be dropped in SIR exercise

Kolkata, Oct 28 (PTI) West Bengal chief electoral officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal on Tuesday said not a single genuine voter’s name would be struck off the list following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. He was hopeful that the the list would be 100 per cent fair and transparent. “I would like to assure you that not a single legitimate voter’s name would be excluded from the list. We are hopeful that it would be a 100 per cent fair voter list,” Agarwal told reporters. He was talking to reporters following an all-party meeting at the CEO office here. The Bengal CEO said currently there are 7,66,37,529 voters in the state. “We didn’t have time in Bihar. We have got the time in Bengal. So, there’s no opportunity to create any confusion. The increase in voters compared to 2002 is normal. Many people’s names have been transferred,” he said. Elaborating on the process, Agarwal said from November 4, the survey will begin door-to-door in Bengal. “Enumeration forms will be distributed door-to-door. The BLOs will go door-to-door to collect the information. All data will be available on the BLOs’ app. It will be compared with the voter list from 2002. Based on that, SIR will be issued. Each voter will have a separate QR code,” he said. The CEO clearly stated that if one’s parent’s name is in the voter list from 2002, there is no cause for concern. “However, if any person’s name is missing from the voter list following the revision of the electoral rolls, a notice will be sent and a hearing will be held,” he stated. Agarwal also said in case of any confusion, there would be a help desk in each district to resolve issues. PTI SCH MNB

Cyclone Montha: Heavy rain causes landslides in Odisha, normal life affected

Bhubaneswar, Oct 28 (PTI) The severe cyclonic storm Montha on Tuesday brought heavy rain in coastal and southern Odisha districts, causing landslides and damaging houses besides uprooting trees, officials said. The landfall of Montha started Kakinada in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh about 7 pm and the process will continue for three to four hours, the Met office said. The preliminary reports of damages were received from eight southern Odisha districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur. Normal life, however, was affected in a total of 15 districts in the region. A report from Anaka Gram Panchayat in Gajapati district said big boulders fell from nearby hills, blocking roads to five villages. “The place was earlier identified as landslide landslide-prone area. Therefore, arrangements have been made for early clearance of the blockade,” said Balakrushna Mallick, a local panchayat functionary. Another landslide was also reported from Linga–Barabha road in Partoda panchayat Kashinagar block of Gajapati. Trees were also uprooted in Gunupur, Gudari and Ramnaguda areas of Rayagada district. “Reports of damage from different districts would be compiled once the cyclone crosses the state,” an official at the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) office said. However, a report from Gajapati district said that a supply assistant engaged in managing cyclone shelter at Potara panchayat died after suddenly falling ill on Monday night. The deceased, identified as Surendra Gamang, had been bringing people to the cyclone shelter on Monday, said Panchayat Samiti member Lokanath Dalai. The police were yet to confirm the cause of Gamang’s death. A report from Mohana in Gajapati district said a mud-walled house collapsed due to incessant rains, leaving one person injured. The tin roof of a house in the area was blown away in strong winds, an official said. Dr Manorama Mohanty, the director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, said, “The landfall of the severe cyclonic storm Montha has started about 7 pm and the process will continue for three to four hours.” During the landfall, the wind speed was 80 to 90 km per hour with gusting up to 110 kmph, Mohanty said. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed the state’s preparation for the possible impact of the calamity that has already affected normal life across 15 districts in the coastal and southern regions of the state. He said that over 2,000 cyclone shelters were set up to shelter the affected people and the government has set the “Zero Casualty” goal. The CM said 153 rescue teams (over 6,000 personnel) comprising personnel of NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Service are positioned at vulnerable places across the eight southern districts and responding to the situations. An official report said that as many as 1,871 pregnant women were shifted to various health centers since Monday, of whom 452 have given birth. The administration has already announced the closure of schools and anganwadi centres in nine districts till October 30, while East Coast Railway has announced cancellation, diversion, and short termination of some trains operating in the Waltair region and connected routes. The leave of government employees has also been cancelled till October 30. The administration has also sealed all sea beaches to prevent tourists and local people from entering the shores, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) D K Singh said. A report from Puri said that a lifeguard was injured after he was allegedly assaulted by tourists at the beach on Tuesday when he prevented them from taking a bath in the sea in view of cyclone Montha. The tourist’s wife allegedly attacked the lifeguard with slippers for stopping them from entering the sea, police said. As the sea conditions remain rough to very rough, the state government has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal, along and off the Odisha coast, till October 29. A statement issued by the East Coast Railway said that as many as 61 trains were cancelled, two diverted, and five short-terminated/short-originated five trains, while eight others were rescheduled. The weather agency also suggested hoisting of local cautionary signal (LC-III) No-III at Gopalpur Port and Distant Warning Signal No-II (DW-II) at Paradip, Dhamra, Puri, Chhatrapur and Chandbali ports of Odisha. In a video message, Leader of the Opposition and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik urged people to cooperate with the administration in tackling cyclone ‘Montha’. “You know the storm Montha is coming. We have successfully faced many storms in the past. So don’t be afraid. Be alert. Give full cooperation to the administration. “My request to our BJD workers, brothers and sisters, is to be with the people in this time of crisis and help them. We have always been fighting various disasters together. This time too, let’s fight the storm together,” Patnaik said. PTI AAM NN

New Delhi Over 91000 Fake ENO Packets Seized How To Know Real Antacid Powder

After fake Colgate toothpaste, a fake ENO racket has come to light. In a major crackdown, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted the fake antacid manufacturing unit in the Ibrahimpur area of North Delhi. The raid uncovered a large-scale operation producing counterfeit sachets of the over-the-counter medicine. Two men, identified as Sandeep Jain and Jitender alias Chotu, were arrested at the site. Both are residents of Ibrahimpur and are believed to be the key operators behind the illegal setup. During the operation, officers reportedly seized over 91,000 counterfeit ENO sachets, along with 80 kg of raw material, 13 kg of company-branded rolls, 54,780 stickers, 2,100 unfilled packets, and a packaging machine. With such an alarming pattern of counterfeit manufacturing units producing fake pharmaceuticals and health-related products across India, how can an ordinary person know if the ENO they are buying is the real one or a fake? If you are wondering the same, worry not, we have got you covered. According to ENO’s official site, the product is made up of Svarjiksara (Shudh) and Nimbukamlam (Shushkam), which neutralise stomach acid on contact and help relieve indigestion and gas. Chemically, it is a mixture of sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, and sodium carbonate. The fake one might not be consistent with this formula, may contain cheap, substandard ingredients that could be harmful, and may not dissolve quickly or taste different. Counterfeit antacids may contain harmful chemicals or incorrect dosages, leading to stomach irritation, acid reflux, or allergic reactions. How to tell if it’s a fake ENO? To identify a fake ENO, you can either check the packaging, MRP, or inspect the quality of the product itself, including its print, company name and logo. The real products have a clean, shiny packaging with clear branding. Counterfeits may have faint or blurred print. One can also see slight differences in the size of the original and duplicate pouches, with the latter being slightly smaller. Always check the manufacturing details, such as the manufacturer’s name, batch number, address, and price, before buying the product. If the details appear blurry, are incomplete, or are not mentioned, then that’s a fake one. Is there any price difference between fake ENO and the real one? While one sachet of the antacid, containing 5 gms of the product, retails at Rs 10 at medical shops, anything below it might be a warning sign. While any side effects of a fake ENO have not been reported yet, consuming a counterfeit product can cause stomach irritation, increased acidity, and even food poisoning. Such products are manufactured without quality testing and lack medical approval.

Sabarimala gold case: Accused Murari Babu sent to SIT custody for 4 days

Pathanamthitta (Kerala), Oct 28 (PTI) A Kerala court on Tuesday granted the custody of B Murari Babu, an accused in the case of gold loss from Sabarimala, to the SIT — which is probing the matter — for four days. A magisterial court granted his custody to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on its plea seeking the same. Babu, a former Devaswom administrative officer, is the second accused in the case related to the loss of gold from the ‘Dwarapalaka’ (guardian deity) idols and the sixth accused in the matter of gold loss from the sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) door frame. The main accused in both cases, Bengaluru-based businessman Unnikrishnan Potty, is currently in SIT custody which will end on October 30. The SIT had recently taken him to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for evidence collection and returned to Kerala on October 26 evening. Last week, the SIT searched the jewellery shop owned by Govardhan, who reportedly funded the gold-plating work of the temple’s sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) door frame, officially sponsored by Potty. Subsequently, searches were conducted at Potty’s residence in Srirampura, Bengaluru, and at the Smart Creation office in Chennai, where the electroplating of the gold-clad copper plates of the dwarapalaka (guardian deity) idols was carried out in 2019. The SIT reportedly seized several quantities of gold from the first two locations. Babu was arrested by the SIT last week. The SIT probe was ordered by the Kerala High Court after it found loss of gold from the gold-plated copper claddings of the Dwarapalaka idols when they were last sent for renovation to Chennai in 2019. The revelation came during the proceedings initiated by the High Court on its own in connection with the removal of the idols this year again for renovation without informing it. PTI COR HMP HMP KH
