Trump to appear on ‘60 Minutes’ after settling lawsuit with CBS News

Washington: President Donald Trump is returning to “60 Minutes” this weekend, his first appearance on the show since he settled a lawsuit this summer with CBS News over the newsmagazine's interview with Kamala Harris. Trump was interviewed by CBS' Norah O'Donnell Friday at Mar-a-Lago for the appearance, which will air this Sunday. The president has an uneasy history with television's most popular newsmagazine. But he has signalled friendlier relations with CBS News after the takeover of its parent company this summer by new Paramount CEO David Ellison, the son of wealthy supporter Larry Ellison. CBS News offered few details Friday on how the interview came together, or whether there were any ground rules put in place. O'Donnell, the former “CBS Evening News” anchor, is not one of the show's regular correspondents. Trump walked out of a “60 Minutes” interview with correspondent Lesley Stahl shortly before the 2020 election, complaining of bias, and his team released an unedited transcript of the conversation. Despite invitations, he did not agree to a “60 Minutes” interview during the 2024 election campaign. But he complained that the newsmagazine's interview with Harris, his Democratic opponent, was edited deceptively in order to make her look good. CBS News strongly denied any wrongdoing, but Trump filed a lawsuit against the company. Paramount decided to pay Trump $16 million to settle the case this summer, shortly before the Federal Communications Commission approved Paramount's merger with Ellison's Skydance Media. In the wake of the Trump lawsuit, “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens resigned this past spring, saying that it was becoming clear that he could no longer run the programme independently. Since taking over at Paramount, Ellison has sent signals of a closer relationship with Trump. He hired Kenneth Weinstein, the former head of a conservative think tank and a donor to Trump's 2024 campaign, to serve in a role investigating complaints that the network had shown bias in its reporting. Paramount also purchased the Free Press website in October and named its founder, Bari Weiss, as the new editor-in-chief of CBS News. Weiss reportedly had a role in booking the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and aide Steve Witkoff for a “60 Minutes” interview two weeks ago, talking about the peace deal in Gaza. Flying back from the Middle East on Oct 12, Trump told reporters that “Larry Ellison is great, and his son David is great. They're friends of mine. They're big supporters of mine, and they'll do the right thing.”

'Right Time To Invest In India's Shipping Sector’: PM Modi To Global Investors At Maritime Leaders Conclave

Mumbai, Oct 29 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday exhorted global investors to take bets on the Indian shipping sector, pointing out that this is the "right time" for such a move. The Prime Minister also met a select chief executives of global majors, including DP World and APM, at a specially convened meeting on the sidelines of the India Maritime Week 2025 held here. "For all of you hailing from different countries, this is the right time to work in the Indian shipping sector and also expand (your presence)," Modi said during a public address before the closed-door meeting with CEOs. Modi listed several targets being chased by India in the maritime sector over the next few years, and underlined the importance of the global community in the same. "You all are an important partner who will help us achieve all our aims. We welcome your ideas, innovations and investments," Modi said. He said that India allows 100 per cent foreign direct investment in the shipping and ports sector, and also provides incentives under the "Make In India, and Make For The World" vision. Addressing an audience, including leaders of various companies, the Prime Minister affirmed India's commitment to strengthening the supply chain resilience at a global level. He also said that India is engaged in creating world-class mega ports, and cited the work undertaken on the Vadhavan Port to the north of the financial capital, which entered the top-10 firms in the world on the first day. The government is also looking to grow the capacity at 12 major ports by four times and increase India's share in containerised cargo at the global level. Later, Modi held a meeting with top CEOs of shipping sector companies from across the world. As per people in the know, he met AP Moller-Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla, DP World Group Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Mediterranean Shipping Company Chief Executive Soren Toft, Adani Ports and SEZ Managing Director Karan Adani and French company CMA-CGM's Senior Vice President Ludovic Renou. The Prime Minister also thanked Port of Singapore (PSA) for the nearly Rs 8,000 crore investment in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority's fourth terminal, pointing out that this is also the largest FDI in the port sector in India. Modi said more than 150 new initiatives have been launched under the 'Maritime India Vision', resulting in nearly doubling the capacity of major ports, a substantial reduction in turnaround time, and a new momentum in cruise tourism. Delhi 'Acid Attack': Woman's Uncle, Brother Arrested, Father Sent To Judicial Custody

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested the brother and uncle of a 20-year-old college student who allegedly faked an acid attack in northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar area. The two were identified as Wakeel, 42, and his nephew, the woman's brother. Her father, Akil Khan, who was earlier arrested in a separate rape case, has been sent to judicial custody, police said. According to police, the investigation revealed that Akil, his brother Wakeel and his son concocted the acid attack to get even with the rape accusers. "To execute the plan, Akil carried out the act himself by pouring a chemical (toilet cleaner) on his daughter's hand and bag near Ashok Vihar before fleeing … on a motorcycle," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh said in a statement. The officer said the woman, a second-year BCom student, is enrolled with the Non-Collegiate Women's Education Board of Delhi University. The woman had originally claimed that three men hurled acid on her near Ashok Vihar while she was headed for extra classes on Sunday. She identified the attackers as Jitender and his two associates. However, the investigation later revealed that the two associates were her own relatives, who her family had a property dispute with. During their probe, police found no trace of acid at the spot nor any CCTV footage of the alleged attackers. A Forensic Science Laboratory team also found no discarded acid bottles. "After a detailed investigation, it was found that the student's father and uncle had staged the attack to falsely implicate Jitender and others. The student's brother dropped her near Ashok Vihar on a scooter, after which she took an e-rickshaw and got off 300 metres before her college gate. This sequence of movement raised suspicion," the DCP said. On Monday, police arrested Akil Khan over a rape complaint filed against him by Jitender's wife. Akil Khan is also an accused in a 2018 acid attack case in Mangolpuri, registered by the mother of the same brothers whom the student tried to implicate in the fake acid attack story. In her complaint, Jitender's wife alleged that between 2021 and 2024, she worked at Akil Khan's socks factory, where he sexually assaulted her and blackmailed her with her private photos and videos. The matter was reported at the Bhalswa Dairy Police Station. The DCP said that Jitender was not involved in the incident. "He was working in Karol Bagh on the day of the alleged attack, which has been confirmed through CCTV footage and his location details," he said. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Calls All-Party Meeting To Oppose SIR, Calls ECI Move 'Hasty'

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 29 (PTI) As the Election Commission of India gears up to implement SIR of voter lists in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said the Cabinet has decided to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the steps to oppose the initiative. Vijayan, at a press conference here, said the decision of the EC to "hastily" implement the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was a matter of concern. He said that the Kerala Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution pointing out the dangers of this move, which poses a challenge to the very democratic process of our country, and had urged that the SIR be withdrawn and that the revision of the voters’ list be carried out in a transparent manner. "Now, the decision has been taken to go ahead with the SIR, disregarding the views of political parties as well as those of the State Chief Electoral Officer. "The State Election Officer himself had opined that implementing this process now is impractical, given that local body elections are due to be held in the state. This decision must be strongly opposed," the CM said. He said that the state cabinet meeting held during the day decided to convene an all-party meeting on November 5 to discuss the next steps. Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Kerala, Rathan U Kelkar, on Wednesday said that the intention behind SIR was to "create a pure electoral roll by including all eligible people and excluding those ineligible". Regarding the concerns of the political parties, Kelkar said that they "need not be alarmed" as any concerns they have can be addressed as he would be holding weekly meetings with them during the implementation of the initiative. His remarks came while speaking to PTI-video after holding a meeting with the political parties in the state. Kelkar said that he held the meeting to inform the parties about the schedule of SIR implementation, the preparedness activities and the "modus operandi of implementing" it in Kerala. He said that he requested the political parties to provide their extensive support in implementing the initiative, especially at the time of house-to-house verification carried out by Booth-Level Officers (BLOs). "At that time, the presence of booth-level agents of the parties will be very useful," he said. The first step of implementing SIR would be distribution and collection of pre-printed enumeration forms, he said. The printing of the forms has commenced and they will be ready for distribution to all eligible voters by November 4, the Kerala CEO said. "After that, the only thing the people have to do is verify their credentials in the pre-printed form and give it back to the BLOs or submit it online. Once we get the forms, the process of verification of the claims and objections will happen," Kelkar said. The CEO said that the political parties were concerned that the process might impact the upcoming local body elections in the state as many officials would be also working as Returning Officers and the booth-level agents will also be busy with the poll process. "So, we have requested them to nominate more booth-level agents who would not be actively involved in the poll process and also intimated to them that only a portion of the officials managing the SIR will play the dual role of Returning Officers as well," Kelkar said. He said that the SIR implementation and the local body polls will go on "simultaneously" and "seamlessly". He expressed confidence that the SIR process will get all the requisite support from the state and the political parties. Kelkar said that he has informed the political parties about the "strategy" that will be adopted to implement SIR and the "transparency and fairness with which we will be acting". "So, I do not see any issues going forward," he asserted. Earlier in the day, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the party will oppose the implementation of the SIR of voter lists in Kerala, just as it has done inside and outside Parliament. Terming the initiative as an "affront to democracy", she said, "Given how they (EC) have done it in Bihar, we have fought against it in Parliament and outside it. We will continue to fight against it everywhere." PTI HMP HMP ROH SA

UK Man Arrested For Raping 20-Year-Old Indian-Origin Woman Raped In ‘Racially Aggravated’ Attack

London, Oct 27 (PTI) A 20-year-old woman, identified as being of Indian heritage, was allegedly raped in what police believe was a "racially aggravated" attack in the West Midlands region of England over the weekend. The police said a 32-year-old man was arrested on Monday morning after a manhunt was launched in the wake of the attack on Saturday evening. The West Midlands Police said they were called to the Park Hall area of Walsall following concerns for the welfare of a woman in distress in the street. Detective Superintendent (DS) Ronan Tyrer, who is overseeing the investigation for the force, described the arrest in the Perry Barr area of the region as a “significant development”. “Our investigation will progress today, and, as always, our priority is the woman who was the subject of this attack,” said DS Tryer. “She has been updated this morning and will continue to receive full support from specially trained officers,” he said. On Sunday, the force released CCTV footage of the suspect, a white male in his 30s, as part of an urgent public appeal for information related to the crime they are investigating as a "racially aggravated attack”. “This was an absolutely appalling attack on a young woman, and we are doing absolutely everything we can to arrest the person responsible,” DS Tyrer said at the time. “We have teams of officers recovering evidence and building a profile of the attacker so that he can be brought into custody as soon as possible. While we are following multiple lines of enquiry right now, it’s vital that we get to hear from anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time,” he said. “It may be that you were driving through the area and have dashcam footage, or you have CCTV that we have not yet recovered. Your information could be the vital breakthrough that we need,” he said. The attacker was described as white, in his 30s, with short hair and wearing dark clothing at the time of the attack. While the police are yet to confirm further details, local community groups have claimed that the victim is a Punjabi woman and expressed concerns as the latest attack comes weeks after the "racially aggravated rape" of a British Sikh woman in the nearby Oldbury area. “At this stage, we are not linking this attack to any other offences,” DS Tyrer said in his statement. Specialist officers from the force’s Public Protection Unit, local policing officers, and forensic officers are said to be working to recover CCTV, speaking to witnesses, and identifying the suspect. Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police said his team’s focus is on supporting the investigators in identifying and arresting the attacker. “Walsall is a diverse area, and we know the fear and concern that this awful attack will cause in our communities,” said Dolby. “We have been speaking to people in the community today to listen to and understand their concerns, and there will be an increased policing presence in the coming days,” he said. Sikh Federation UK quoted local sources to say that the “young woman who was subject to a racially aggravated rape in Walsall is a Punjabi woman”. “The attacker apparently broke down the door of the house where she was living… West Midlands Police have now had two racially aggravated rapes of young women in their 20s in the last two months and urgently need to find those responsible,” the organisation said. The force has made a few arrests before releasing the suspects on bail in their investigation into the racially aggravated rape of a British Sikh woman in Oldbury last month. British Sikh MPs, Preet Kaur Gill and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, took to social media to express their shock and condemnation at a feared “repeated pattern” of violent attacks on women in the region. “Deeply shocked and saddened that we are hearing of yet another racially aggravated rape, this time in Walsall. West Midlands Police have reported a rape and assault of a young woman in her 20s in the Park Hall area, described as racially aggravated,” said Gill. “This follows the horrifying reports of a racially aggravated rape of a Sikh girl in Oldbury, and a rape of a woman in Halesowen. The repeated pattern of violence against women in our region, compounded by hate and racial overtones, is deeply disturbing,” she said. The Labour MP for Birmingham Edgbaston in the West Midlands said her thoughts are with the victims and their families as she appealed for the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. “After the shocking racially aggravated rape in Oldbury that the Sikh community is still reeling from, yet another in Walsall. We’re thinking of the victim and need to help the police at a time when more people are feeling unsafe. Spreading of hate has real consequences,” said Dhesi, Labour MP for Slough. Will set up factories, end joblessness: Tejashwi

INDIA bloc’s chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday vowed to make Bihar a leading state in the country by attracting investment and setting up factories if the opposition coalition was voted to power.Addressing successive rallies in Parbatta and Alauli in Khagaria district and Shahpur in Bhojpur, Yadav said he was contesting the elections not merely to form a government but to rebuild the state.“We need to make Bihar number one, for which there is a need to bring investments, promote education and ensure proper health facilities,” he said.Yadav criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming the senior BJP leader had said factories could not be set up in Bihar due to a lack of land. “We will set up factories in the state and bring investment to take Bihar on the development trajectory,” he said. The RJD leader alleged that the government led by PM Modi had not even set up a needle factory in Bihar. “He comes here only to defraud the people of the state. The PM sets up factories in Gujarat and seeks votes in Bihar,” he charged.Taking on the prohibition policy of the Nitish Kumar government, Yadav claimed the restrictions on liquor sales existed only in name. “While the administration allows home delivery of liquor for affluent sections of society, the poor, including women, are harassed through late-night raids,” he said, referring to allegations of seized alcohol disappearing from police custody. He accused Modi of “hijacking” Nitish Kumar, asserting that the CM was “incapable of leading Bihar anymore”.Yadav announced that if the INDIA bloc came to power, a law would be enacted within 20 days to provide a government job to every family, with recruitments completed in 20 months. “I can’t see the pain of unemployed degree holders,” he said.Yadav reiterated his pledge to regularise the services of contractual workers and to give women an annual sum of Rs 30,000 in a single instalment.
