Aryna Sabalenka takes down Elena Rybakina to extend Wuhan Open winning run

Aryna Sabalenka extended her unbeaten run at the Wuhan Open to 20 matches with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Elena Rybakina on Friday, keeping alive her quest for a fourth straight title and setting up a semi-final clash with Jessica Pegula. In the 13th chapter of a rivalry that has played out on the biggest stages, including the 2023 Australian Open final, it was Sabalenka who struck first against Rybakina by breaking in the eighth game with a scorching forehand winner. Sabalenka, who won the Wuhan title in 2018-19 and again last year after the tournament returned following the Covid pandemic, clinched the opening set with a hold and broke Rybakina's serve in the first game of the second set to tighten her grip on the match. The world No 1 closed out the victory despite a few service wobbles late on, improving her win-loss record against Rybakina to 8-5 and earning a measure of revenge for a defeat in their last encounter this year in Cincinnati. "She's a great player, very nice girl and always tough to play against," Sabalenka said. "We have a really huge history against each other, always great battles, and I'm always excited to play her. She always pushes me to the limit. I'm super happy with my performance today, with the win and the support in the stadium. "I feel a really great connection with Chinese fans I guess. I feel at home every time I'm playing in this stadium. Honestly, it (the winning run) is crazy." Up next for the big-hitting Belarusian is American Pegula, who came from behind to beat Czech Katerina Siniakova 2-6 6-0 6-3 for her 50th match win of the season and boost her chances of qualifying for next month's season-ending WTA Finals. Sabalenka has won eight of her 10 meetings with Pegula, including in the US Open final last year, and the US Open semi-finals this season. German Laura Siegemund meets American third-seed Coco Gauff in another quarter-final later on Friday, before second seed Iga Swiatek of Poland meets Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in a rematch of their 2024 French Open final.

New Delhi, October 10: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday expressed India's commitment to Afghanistan's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence and announced India's upgradation of Technical Mission in Kabul to the status of Embassy. He said that Afghanistan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi's visit to India marks an important step in advancing bilateral ties and affirming the enduring friendship between two nations. In his opening remarks during his meeting with Muttaqi in New Delhi on Friday, EAM Jaishankar also recalled the talks held with Afghan Foreign Minister after the April 22 Pahalgam attack and earthquake in Kunar and Nangarhar. He said, "India is fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Afghanistan. Closer cooperation between us contributes to your national development, as well as regional stability and resilience. To enhance that, I am pleased to announce today the upgrading of India’s Technical Mission in Kabul to the status of Embassy of India." He expressed India's interest in Afghanistan's development and progress. EAM Jaishankar said that he and Muttaqi can speak about the maintenance and repairs of finished projects and steps to complete others. Afghanistan FM Amir Khan Muttaqi Arrives in India for Week-Long Visit to Strengthen Bilateral Ties, Discuss Regional Issues. "As a contiguous neighbour and a well-wisher of the Afghan people, India has a deep interest in your development and progress. Today, I reaffirm that our longstanding partnership that has seen so many Indian projects in Afghanistan stands renewed. We can discuss the maintenance and repairs of finished projects as well as steps to complete others to which we have already committed. Beyond that, other development priorities of Afghanistan can be discussed by our teams." Highlighting India's assistance to Afghanistan over the years, he said, "India has long extended support for the health security of Afghanistan, including during the Covid pandemic. We are now ready to commit to six new projects, whose details can be announced after the conclusion of our talks. A gift of 20 ambulances is another gesture of good will and I would like to handover 5 of them to you personally as a symbolic step." "India will also provide MRI and CT scan machines to Afghan hospitals and deliver vaccines for immunization and cancer medicines. We have also supplied drug rehabilitation materials through UNODC and are open to doing more. As a first responder, Indian relief materials were delivered to the earthquake sites within hours of the disaster last month. We would like to contribute to the reconstruction of residences in the affected areas. India has also been a significant provider of food assistance to the Afghan people. A further consignment will be delivered in Kabul today," he added. EAM Jaishankar expressed concern over forced repatriation of Afghan refugees. He said, "The plight of forcibly repatriated Afghan refugees is a matter of deep concern. Their dignity and livelihood is important. India agrees to help construct residences for them and continue providing material aid to rebuild their lives." He said that the two nations have "productive history" of cooperating on water management and irrigation. He further said, "We note the interest on the Afghan side in taking this further and are ready to collaborate on the sustainable management of its water resources. Your invitation to Indian companies to explore mining opportunities in Afghanistan is also deeply appreciated. This can be discussed further." He announced that India will expand avenues for Afghan students to pursue studies at Indian universities. He said, "Our educational and capacity building programmes have long nurtured the Afghan youth. We will expand avenues for Afghan students to pursue studies at Indian universities. Sports is another longstanding connection. The emergence of Afghan cricket talent has been truly impressive. India is glad to deepen its support for Afghan cricket. As you are aware, India has introduced a new visa module for Afghan people in April 2025. As a result, we are now issuing greater number of visas, including in medical, business and student categories." "We have a common commitment towards growth and prosperity. However, these are endangered by the shared threat of cross-border terrorism that both our nations face. We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We appreciate your sensitivity towards India’s security concerns. Your solidarity with us in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack was noteworthy," he added.

Plaid Cymru ready to replace Labour, says leader

Plaid Cymru is ready to replace Labour at the Welsh Parliament election next year, the party’s leader will say. In a speech at the annual party conference, Rhun ap Iorwerth will position Plaid as a government-in-waiting, with “new energy and new ideas”. “Let’s be clear. We’re not here to act as Labour’s conscience. We are not here to repair Labour. We are here to replace them,” he is expected to say. Labour has led Wales since the Senedd was first established as the National Assembly for Wales in 1999. But recent polling has forecast Plaid and Reform to be the two biggest parties in Wales at the election in May. Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Mr ap Iorwerth said: “What has happened now is that a host of elements have come together which has led to a belief in people’s minds that that leadership of Wales, for the very first time, is within grasp. “And Plaid Cymru is a party that now is putting forward that radical idea on health, on education, on creating better and better-paid jobs, on tackling poverty, that Labour’s failed to deal with.” He added: “We’ve had one party, as it happens, in power over 26 years and I think they’ve run out of steam, I think they’ve run out of ideas, and having a chance to put a Plaid Cymru government in place, new leadership for our country after 26 years of standing still frankly, we can put a new energy into getting to grips with health, getting to grips with education and the economy. “Devolution is only the means to take action on behalf of our country. Now we need to use those tools for the betterment of our country. “I believe that Plaid Cymru can do that and we’re asking to build an alliance of the people ahead of the election next year to give us that change and make it a positive one.”
