Paul Mescal has praised his Hamnet co-star Jessie Buckley, describing her as “a red wine actor” who he’d work with “until the cows come home.” Speaking at the London Film Festival premiere on Saturday, 11 October, the Irish star explained that he felt Buckley’s performances are “full-bodied, like raw, [and she] goes to the well every time the way that she works.” Buckley plays Agnes Shakespeare/Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare’s wife, opposite Mescal, who stars as the playwright in Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel. The cast also includes Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, Jacobi Jupe, Noah Jupe and Olivia Lynes. Hamnet opens in the US this November before its UK release on 9 January 2026.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2. The Christian’s bold proposition is that right thinking can only begin with active, obedient faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is not popular, not politically correct. But it follows the basic, essential positions of the Biblical Christian faith. The Deity of Christ, His place in the Triune Godhead, His sovereign authority, His resurrection and all its implications, the authority of Scripture as Divine revelation – all these and their doctrinal conclusions lead the Christian believer to make them the foundation of right, logical thinking. Faith has its reason. We arrive at this radical faith through accepting that the Bible is a God-inspired Book. Even against the claims of the post-truth generation, the post-modern rejection of the Bible’s meta-narrative, the Bible for the believer is the source book of truth. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Christian religion claims that the Bible is the objective, certain source of God’s will for His human creation. Given to us through the writings of prophets, apostles and others. In our still liberal democracies, the choice of religious belief, or non-belief, is guaranteed by the Constitution. Ideally, the Church through its teachers and members presents the Biblical teachings as best as it can, leaving the choice of acceptance to the hearers. So, the Church proclaims that, faced with the reality of his sinful situation, man is called to repentance, to a decisive change of thinking, attitude and behavior. He is called especially to change his thought life, which is the source of his lifestyle. Man is a responsible being and will give account to his Creator for his behavior on this earth. God “commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17: 30, 31). The Christian appeal begins from the fact that man is “dead in trespasses and sins.” (Colossians 2:13). He needs salvation, transformation, deliverance from all that causes him to practice wickedness. This transformation can only happen through the life-giving power of God the Holy Spirit. The radical nature of the Christian gospel is emphasized at this point. Jesus said clearly: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3). After this rebirth, “not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:13), the thought life, its desires, goals, sinful activity will be changed, as right thinking begins. Here is the reality of repentance, a fundamental change of mind that leads to change of behavior. The “living and active” word of God is the means by which this transformation happens, this new life begins. “You have been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever…this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:23, 25). The first right thought is faith that God exists, He has not been silent, He has spoken and we have a record of His words to humanity in the Bible Scriptures. To believe this is to act on that conviction. The Bible writers exhort, “..be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22). For the Christian, right thinking cannot be only a matter of external good works and self-righteous behavior. They are called to “do the will of God from the heart.” (Ephesians 6:6). Especially in private. They must be convinced decisively of the facts of their faith. Only then will he live and act according to Biblical precepts. He is called to obedience of God’s good and perfect will. It is through this real, observable, obedient, life-changing faith, a gift of the Holy Spirit, that he is declared righteous by God. The world around can only know of his change of mind, his repentance, of his rebirth, by his works, the fruit of his faith. “I will show you my faith by my works.” (James 2:18). The foundation of right thinking and right behavior is the humble acknowledgement that man and woman are the creation of Almighty God. They have been given the ability to choose morally, have failed, but are now in need of rebirth and restoration. The “whole duty of man is to fear God and keep His commandments.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). The first and great commandment is to love our Creator with all our being. Confession and admittance of our great spiritual need, faith in Jesus Christ as God with us, risen from the grave, coming Judge, willing obedience of God’s commands found in the Bible Scriptures, are the marks of a transformed person. The right thinking that begins here offers a new and realistic perspective of life in this sin-filled, troubled world of violence, corruption and hatred of God. The result of this life-changing faith is a blessing and benefit to self, family and community. It is an insurance and assurance that prepares the soul for sufferings, death, judgement and eternity. It gives a certain promise of a new world where righteousness, peace, joy, love are the ways of life. “Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” (2 Peter 3:13). The apostles and first believers, soon after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, went everywhere, even in the face of danger to their lives, to proclaim the gospel: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). Indeed, to know that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, God with us, and to follow Him, is the beginning and sustenance of right thinking. As to the wisdom of the world that mocks at these things, and its thinking, Paul wrote, “the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” (1 Corinthians 3:19). On the day of Pentecost, with the coming of the Holy Spirit, Peter preaches the first sermon of the gospel. When the audience asks “what shall we do?”, the apostle responds “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” (Acts 2:38). Faith in Christ and repentance, change of life from sin to obedience and holiness, is still the gospel call to needed salvation. There begins right thinking about our human reality in the presence of Almighty God and Christ Jesus the coming King and Judge.

The stage was set and the FNB Namibia Eagles delivered in style with a four-wicket victory against South Africa in their first-ever international cricket match on Saturday. Playing in front of a festive crowd of about 4 000 at the official opening of the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground, Namibia restricted SA to 134/8 and then after a see-saw chase, birthday boy Zane Green smashed the winning runs off the last ball of the match. Green played a great innings of 30 not out off 23 balls to take Namibia to the target, but pace bowler Ruben Trumpelmann won the player of the match award after taking three wickets for 28. With great support from the other bowlers, Namibia managed to contain South Africa to a reachable target of 135. The young Max Heingo made a stunning debut with two wickets for 32 runs, while Gerhard Erasmus, Ben Shikongo, and JJ Smit each took one wicket to limit SA to a reachable target of 135. Middle-order batter Jason Smith was their top scorer with 31 runs, while Ruben Hermann scored 23 and Lhuan-dre Pretorius 22. In reply, Namibia got off to a tentative start with Louren Steenkamp scoring 13 and Jan Frylinck and Nicol-Loftie Eaton 7 each, but Erasmus led a brave revival against South Africa’s array of pace bowlers, and when he was dismissed for 21 the match was still very evenly balanced at 66/4 midway through their innings. Namibia’s middle-order batters all made telling contributions with JJ Smit scoring 13 and Malan Kruger 18, but it was Green who shone bright on his 29th birthday with 30 not out off 23 balls, while Ruben Trumpelmann added 11 not out as Namibia capped a historical day with a magical victory.
The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has issued two alerts due to adverse maritime conditions that will affect both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama in the coming days. On the Pacific coast, winds with westerly and southerly winds are expected to intensify from this Saturday, October 11th, to Tuesday October 14th. These conditions will cause increased waves and rough seas along the entire Pacific coast of the country. Meanwhile, along the Caribbean coast, adverse maritime conditions are forecast due to the presence of swells and increased wind speeds. These will affect the central and western Caribbean regions, including windy conditions in the east. This alert will be in effect from Saturday, October 11th to Tuesday, October 14th. Sinaproc recommends extreme caution for swimmers, small boat crews, and vulnerable coastal communities due to the risk of sea incursions into low-lying areas. The institution reported that it will maintain constant monitoring and surveillance of the situation to safeguard the safety of the population.
Five men accused of executing contract killings that left two Durban Metropolitan Police Service officers and an African Narional Congress Youth League secretary dead will stand trial in May 2026, it was decided in the Durban High Court this week. The accused, arrested by the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), allegedly shot their victims execution-style after mistakenly killing the wrong target in their initial assassination attempt. The case was deemed trial-ready by the Durban High Court earlier this week. The accused men – Fana Wellington Shabalala (39), Thulani Holly Shozi (36), Zamokuhle Mnyandu (44), Ntobeko Hadebe/Msezane, (29) and Mthokozisi Ntando Blose – are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of murder, unlawful possession of an automatic rifle, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The five men are alleged to have been contracted and paid to kill Lindokuhle Madonsela, who was an ANC member and a Durban Metro Police officer, between May and June 2020. The state alleges they conspired among themselves, with Shozi being the one to assist his co-accused and their alleged accomplices with movement details of Madonsela. However, on 25 May 2020, in a matter of mistaken identity, the accused allegedly shot and killed ANCYL secretary Thamsanqa Kingdom Gcabashe, who was coming from a prayer meeting in the evening, mistaking him for Madonsela. Gcabashe had just been appointed as ANCYL secretary. Additionally, he lived together with the metro police officer Madonsela at Mpumalanga township in Hammarsdale. “Gcabashe saw the accused inside his yard, armed with handguns, and tried to run away. However, two shots were fired while they were chasing him. He fell to the ground, and they continued firing shots at him. He died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the skull and its contents,” reads the indictment against the accused. When the accused realised Gcabashe was not their target, they allegedly continued with their mission to kill Madonsela. On 9 June 2020, approximately two weeks after the murder of Gcabashe, Ndumiso Thusi, a metro police officer, arrived at Madonsela’s home with his car to pick him up for work at around 05h30. He parked outside the house, and as soon as Madonsela got into the car, they were approached by a vehicle with some of the accused as occupants. The state alleges that the accused, who were armed with an AK-47 rifle and handguns, opened fire on Thusi and Madonsela. “Thusi died at the scene from a penetrating gunshot wound to the head. Madonsela also died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds with multiple organ involvement,” the state alleges. During court proceedings, deputy director of public prosecutions Lawrence Gcaba told the court dates have been agreed on for the trial next year. He said the trial of Shozi and his co-accused would run from 19 May until 19 June. Judge Jacqueline Henriques certified the matter trial-ready and postponed it to 2026. – IOL

NEW YORK (AP) — For months, bubbling trade tensions between China and the U.S. seemed to calm to a simmer, with words like “thaw” and “truce” swapped in for warnings of economic “war.” Now, hostilities appear to be returning to full boil. A series of tit-for-tat moves this week by the two superpowers has thrust trade hostilities back in the global spotlight, roiling markets and raising alarms of what might come next. “Let’s poke the bear again,” economist Aleksandar Tomic, an associate dean at Boston College, said of the renewed sparring. “Let’s stir the hornet’s nest.” A look at where things stand in the U.S.-China trade standoff: Signs of trade-war escalation roil markets Tensions between China and the U.S. transcend any presidency or political party. But Donald Trump’s return to the White House has brought new levels of rancor. A volley of tariffs were introduced, raised and reduced in the year’s first half, igniting retaliation from Chinese leader Xi Jinping. But more recently, several months of relative calm had prevailed. That truce showed signs of fizzling this week, though, with China announcing strict new limits on exports of rare earth minerals crucial to high-tech products. Trump, in turn, threatened an additional 100% tax on Chinese imports by Nov. 1 and export controls on American software. Both sides also hit one another’s ships with new port fees. Whether public moves by Washington and Beijing are meant to advance private talks between the two sides is unknown. But they roiled stock markets, with Friday bringing the S&P 500 its worst day since April and a new dose of uncertainty about what is next. “Either this is it, the so-called tariff truce is over and both sides are going to rapidly escalate or these are negotiation talks ahead of the talks between Xi and Trump,” said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Capital Markets in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jostling for advantage, with exports as bargaining chips With so much unknown about any possible behind-the-scenes negotiations between the two nations, it is hard to gauge who might have the upper hand. But China may sense an opening, with Trump challenged by a government shutdown and the impacts of the ongoing trade war. American soybean farmers who long relied on Chinese sales are now being passed over for exports from Brazil, Argentina and elsewhere. U.S. investors have happily watched markets driven upward by excitement over artificial intelligence, but China dominates the world in the rare earth minerals that are key to technological hardware. American consumers who have come to expect an endless supply of cheap goods that roll off Chinese conveyor belts are bracing for higher prices. “It becomes an issue of who can replace supply chains faster. And, at least right now, I think China is winning that one,” Tomic said. “I don’t know what the cycle of a soybean is, but I bet you can grow a soybean faster than you can build a toy factory.” Are tariff threats empty or a negotiating strategy? Trump has suggested a deal is still possible. He has frequently made threats that turn out to be empty, used as part of a negotiating strategy. For now, Trump has not formally canceled a meeting planned with Xi later this month on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, though he said nothing was certain. “I don’t know that we’re going to have it,” he said in the Oval Office on Friday. “I’m going to be there regardless, so I would assume we might have it.” Chandler said it might appear to be a sudden, dramatic blowup between the U.S. and China, but it is really just more of the same from two parties embroiled in an acrimonious, long-running feud. “It’s sort of like a divorce: The wife and the husband are accusing one another of things that, from the outside, look more complicated,” Chandler said. “This kind of story doesn’t have a good guy. We want to have a good guy and a villain. But these are just two large countries both seeking national advantage.” Matt Sedensky can be reached at msedensky@ap.org and https://x.com/sedensky Matt Sedensky, The Associated Press

President José Raúl Mulino described as morbid and in bad faith the publication by a ‘willy-nilly’ newspaper, which states that the president’s daughters toured the Diplomatic Villa accompanied by “an architect convicted in the Blue Apple case.” According to this newspaper, “the restoration of the ceiling, walls, and floor of the Diplomatic Villa was finalized after a tour in July 2024” and will cost $7.1 million. The article mentions that the Minister of Culture, Maruja Herrera, was accompanied by Monique and Alexandra Mulino, daughters of President José Raúl Mulino. It also highlights that the photo of the tour shows architect George Moreno, convicted in the Blue Apple case. According to this ‘rag-tag’ newspaper, the president’s daughters, as well as the ministers, are aware of Moreno’s legal situation, since the ruling against him “was widely reported in the media and on social media.” Mulino’s reaction was not long in coming and he made his statements on his X account. “I must clarify the publication in the newspaper today, in which, with all the morbidity and bad faith, they published photos of my daughters during a single visit they made to the diplomatic villa to see their condition, as the architect and designer that they are,” the president wrote on his social media. For her part, Monique Mulino also defended herself and said she has nothing to hide, which is why she published the photos of the tour. According to the president’s daughter, she has never participated or intervened in bidding processes, much less sought to benefit anyone. “Everything I do in the Office of the First Lady is free of charge, with the sole purpose of supporting my parents in leaving a worthy legacy,” she said. “It’s not fair to use my name or image to attack the government’s management or distort the truth,” she added. She doesn’t indicate the alleged errors in the news reports. Nor does the president. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time this rag newspaper has attacked one of the current president’s daughters.
