Mother And 6 Year Old Son Set On Fire By Ex

It's a tragic end to months of harassment and assaults that Magana faced at the hands of her obsessed ex. Courtney Menzies travelled north today to find out more about this tragedy. Here is that story. This is all that's left of the home that 35 year old Angelita Magana and her common law husband, Miguel Novelo, had moved into four days earlier with Magana's two children. And with the fiery destruction of their home came the deaths of both Magana and her 6 year old son, Tishan Godoy. Young Tishan was asleep in a room with his sister, 17 year old Shadia Magana, when there was a loud noise, causing their mother to go check on them. That's when Magna's ex common law husband, Francis Godoy, barged into the room, poured gasoline on them, and lit them on fire. Chaos erupted along with the flames, which engulfed Godoy as well. He ran out of the house - a ball of fire in the night - leaving behind the devastation he caused - and collapsed on the grass in the front yard, his clothes completely burnt off. Novelo awoke and tried to save his family, but he was unable to reach young Tishan and also received burns. Shadia Magana was saved by a worker who was sleeping outside and who also got burnt in the process. Voice of: Leon Belgrave, Worker "She was inside the room, she suddenly came out of the room when I was at the door. The girl was covered in flames, I took off my shirt and tried to out the flames. I hugged her and ran downstairs to put her under the water pipe. When I grabbed her, pieces of her skin stayed on my hands, her hair." "You weren't afraid for your life?" Leon Belgrave, Worker "No, I thought whatever happens happens but I'll try to help." "Were you hurt, did you get burnt?" Leon Belgrave, Worker "Yes, my hands when I grabbed the girl. A part of my arm." But while the teenager escaped the fate of her mother and sibling, she's not out of the woods yet since she received burns on 90% of her body and is currently sedated and intubated at the KHMH. Godoy was also transported to the hospital, where he is also suffering from third degree burns across his entire body. But this wasn't the first time Godoy tried to harm Magana. He was in prison for both rape in 2024 and most recently for common assault - and he was just released on October 7th. He then broke into Magana's old home and threatened her and the children. Voice of: Miguel Novelo, Common Law Husband of Deceased "He had a problem, he had a court case for rape with her that hasn't completed. and he had another one that just came out last week, where he had a restriction, that's what happened." "She was afraid because he had already entered about 2 days prior, he had already entered her home from the roof. He covered her mouth and asked her if she would get back together with him but she said she couldn't because she saw it was impossible to have a life with him. So he asked her if she had anything with someone, if she was going to live with someone else and she said yes. He said he will kill both of her kids." Magana was working on a restraining order but due to complications at court, they were unable to get it. However, Novelo said they were planning to go back today to get it. But it was too late and Godoy carried out his threats - killing even his own son and severely injuring his former stepdaughter. And it's not just the family that's grieving but also the school that Magana worked at, and her son attended. Dale Cal, Principal, St Michael's RC School "It was devastating, what can I say, the entire school atmosphere just feels different, just sad, terrible news." "There's a lot to say about her. She's this woman who would fight for every single thing that she can do for her child. She would be doing things to tell, working for the school. she has been employed here at our school for the past 2 years, this would have been her third year. It's basically a voluntary work from a parent we can say because it's not like we have a pay for her, parents contribute for her pay, that's how we handle the school helper here at school, we don't fall under the government's pay. So basically she does it for the love of the school, trying to help, so that speaks a lot about her attitude and character." "Our infant 2 student Tishan, her son, lively child. Very full of spirit, happy child, running up and down like every other child. It's, I don't know what else to say, it's just really sad to see such a young life end in this very terrible manner." "The children, we are allowing them to speak to the teacher, they're speaking, they're asking questions, they have things to express along with the class teacher so basically we're listening to them and having our school engaged in prayers this morning so each class took their turn also to write little notes and say their last goodbyes to Tishan." Godoy is currently under police guard at the KHMH.
