Fishing boats with 'Chinese spyware' discovered near key UK-US military base on Chagos Islands

Fishing boats loaded with 'Chinese spyware' have been discovered near a joint UK-US military base on the Chagos Islands, it has been claimed. Labour has faced mounting criticism for its deal to surrender the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius - a close ally of Beijing - earlier this year. As part of the deal Britain will rent back the largest of the islands, Diego Garcia, as it is home to a key British and American military base. But there are growing fears that Beijing will lean on Mauritius and seek to undermine the strategically important base by spying on its operations. And on Thursdsay night, a representative of Friends of the British Overseas Territories claimed that already 'Chinese spyware has been found aboard fishing vessels near Diego Garcia'. Spokesman Robert Midgley told GB News: 'Chinese diplomats did turn up to Port Louis [the capital of Mauritius] on the day the deal was announced to congratulate the Mauritian government.' He added: 'Chinese spyware has been found aboard fishing vessels near Diego Garcia, but of course the [Foreign Office] didn't want to say anything because they didn't want to cause a diplomatic storm.' Shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel said: 'It is already obvious that the Chagos-China surrender deal puts our national security at risk and now we hear claims that Chinese spyware has been found on fishing vessels near the islands. 'If true, this news is yet more confirmation that Starmer is prepared to throw Britain's safety aside in his desperation to kowtow to China.' The handover of the islands to Mauritius will open the door for the fishing rights around the archipelago to be offered commercially to other countries, including China. Beijing's use of fishing boats to spy on its neighbours is not without precedent. Known as the 'maritime militia', for decades China has used genuine fishing ships as an extension of its navy. Operating out of ports across the South China Sea, the ships operate as commercial boats to provide plausible deniability, but secretly provide the location of submarines or the activities at ports to Beijing. Their use has expanded under President Xi Jinping and they have previously encroached on military vessels or entered the waters of rival countries such as India. The Foreign Office was approached for comment.

Ten missing children between 13 and 18 years old rescued on Oahu

Ten missing children were found and recovered in Oahu, Hawaii, the state attorney general's office and the Hawaii Department of Human Services announced Thursday. Several arrests were made as part of an operation that involved the FBI, the Secret Service, the US Marshals Services and the military. The missing childrens' ages range from 13 to 18. The child victims were identified, but their names were not immediately revealed. 'Our goal is to make every child in the state of Hawaii safe from predators who seek to harm them online or in person,' Internet Crimes Against Children commander Edward Arias said. The recovery was part of Operation Shine the Light, which looks to recover missing children and youth reported as runaways across Oahu. The number of arrests made was not disclosed. Authorities said investigations were ongoing. Hawaii's Attorney General Anne Lopez said: 'I want to acknowledge and thank all our dedicated federal, military, state and county law enforcement and community partners whose collaboration and tireless efforts made this mission a success.' As of Thursday night, the Hawaii Department of Human Services reported 28 missing children in the state. David Porter, FBI special agent in Honolulu, said: 'Protecting our children is at the core of the FBI's mission. 'This operation - in close collaboration with our law enforcement and community partners - is just one example of the work we do around the clock to safeguard our keiki and their futures.' Keiki refers to the Hawaiian word for children. Authorities said Operation Shine the Light started in 2020 to prevent missing children from being trafficked and exploited. After finding the children, authorities then provide them with 'essential services and care'. The 2014 Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act requires state social service agencies to report any missing or abducted children to law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) within 24 hours of learning the child is missing. In 2024, 18 percent of missing children were 'likely victims' of sex trafficking, NCMEC said. Justin Davis, US Marshal of the District of Hawaii, called the recovery 'the very best of what can be accomplished when state, local and federal partners come together with a shared commitment.' He added: 'The efforts of investigators and officers over the past several days reflect an extraordinary level of dedication, compassion and teamwork and the US Marshals Service is proud to stand alongside the Attorney General's Office and our partners to locate missing children, hold predators accountable and create a safer future for all of Hawaii's families.' Authorities said they would use 'every' resource, intelligent tool and partnership to track down criminals linked to missing children. Amanda Leonard, a coordinator for Missing Child Center-Hawaii, told KHON2: 'The reasons why children run away are multifaceted. 'They may have a substance abuse. They may have an older boyfriend or an older girlfriend. They may have met someone online.' The full list of agencies who worked on finding the missing children included the Hawaii attorney general's office, Hawaii Department of Human Services, Honolulu Police Department, FBI, US Marshals Service, Secret Service, Army Criminal Investigation Division, state Department of Law Enforcement Sheriff's Division, Hale Kipa Statewide Trafficking Victim Assistance Program, Oahu First Circuit Family Court and NCMEC. This story is breaking news and developing.

EXCLUSIVE: Shocking Reasons for Musicians' Idolization of Nazis and Hitler Revealed — From David Bowie to Kanye West

David Bowie's flirtation with fascist imagery in the 1970s remains one of rock's darkest and most puzzling episodes – and RadarOnline.com has the inside track on why it is far from unique. Author Daniel Rachel explores in his new book, This Ain't Rock 'n' Roll: Pop Music, the Swastika and the Third Reich, how some of music's most influential figures became entangled with Nazi iconography and ideas.A Dark Chapter in Rock HistoryThe writer, best known for his books Walls Come Tumbling Down and Too Much Too Young, says his latest work was driven by both cultural history and personal reckoning. "It felt important to collate pop music's history with the swastika and the Third Reich," he explained. "There are personal reasons too, which go back to my childhood." Rachel, who grew up in Birmingham, England, in the 1980s, recalls being captivated by punk before fully understanding its provocations. "I would happily sing along to Belsen Was a Gas," he said. "I saw images of Sid Vicious with a swastika armband and thought it was funny. At the same time, raised in a Jewish house, I began to understand what the Holocaust was, and to see images of mass burial sites at Belsen while singing Belsen Was a Gas triggered an emotion that was difficult to unravel. It has stayed with me ever since."Bowie, Lennon, and the Dangerous Allure of Fascist ImageryIn his book, Rachel traces how artists from the 1960s onward used fascist imagery to shock or seduce audiences – often with little awareness of its true weight. Bowie's 1970s incarnation, the Thin White Duke, was described by the singer himself as "a very Aryan, fascist type." In 1975, he called for "an extreme right front (to) sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up," later telling Playboy, "Adolf Hitler was one of the first rock stars." "Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Bryan Ferry have talked about the impact of Leni Riefenstahl's film of the Nuremberg rallies," Rachel said. "When you watch Triumph of the Will, it's easy to see a parallel between Hitler doing a Sieg Heil before thousands of people and a rock star on the lip of a stadium stage, controlling an audience. But in rock'n'roll there has been an attempt to divorce the spectacle from the reality, which was an attempt to exterminate the Jewish people." Rachel points out Bowie's statements – later dismissed by the musician as the product of cocaine addiction and confusion – were not isolated. John Lennon once drew himself as Hitler, while The Who's Keith Moon once dressed in an SS uniform and marched through north London's Golders Green, a largely Jewish area. More recently, Kanye West has praised Hitler and sold swastika-themed T-shirts online.Provocation, Ignorance, and the Roots of Shock Culture"I don't want to be the Simon Wiesenthal (a famous Holocaust survivor) of rock'n'roll," Rachel said, "but it's happening in plain sight and being digested by, in some cases, millions of people. Having laid all this out in the book, I'm asking, why is this still going on?" The fascination of musicians with Naziism and Hitler, he believes, stems from rock's impulse to provoke. "Both stupidity and provocation are the substance of rock'n'roll," he said. "I was in a band for most of my younger years, and not thinking about what you're doing is a mainstay of band life. But that's why the infrastructure around it has to take responsibility." Rachel adds ignorance has also played a role. "The Holocaust was an orchestrated genocide," he said. "That understanding wasn't necessarily present in the history of rock'n'roll, but it should be now."A Personal Reckoning With the PastVisiting Poland's concentration camps while researching his new book, Rachel admitted to confronting his own curiosity. "I found myself almost wanting to buy SS memorabilia, to hold these relics associated with mass murder," he said. "So I do understand the fascination. But Keith Moon parading around Golders Green in an SS uniform only 20 years after the Holocaust? That can't be right."
