Trader's wife guilty of running over man on first date while trying to show off her Porsche, then blaming her Louboutin heels

A wealthy Texas woman has been found guilty of running over a man with her Porsche while he was out on a first date. Kristina Chambers was accused of driving drunk and high when she struck and killed Joseph McMullin on April 19, 2023. McMullin, 33, was walking along the main road in Houston's Montrose neighborhood with his date when Chambers plowed into him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Chambers was trying to show off her new sports car when she sped through the intersection at speeds of up to 70mph, approached a curve in the road and jumped the sidewalk where McMullin was walking with his date, prosecutors told her trial. They also shared how Chambers had gone bar hopping with friends that night and drank at least six alcoholic beverages. She also used cocaine, the trial heard. Her attorney, however, declared the wreck a 'freak accident' and blamed the crash on his client's designer Christian Louboutin heels getting stuck on the gas pedal. The jury seemingly rejected the defense and late Thursday afternoon convicted her of manslaughter, The Houston Chronicle reported. Chambers faces up to 20 years in prison. She is scheduled to appear in court for her sentencing Friday at 9am local time (10 EST). Jurors deliberated for eight hours before handing down their guilty verdict. But McMullin's mother, who was flocked by two dozen loved ones, was seen embracing her family after the jury handed down its ruling. 'This is what justice feels like - I get it,' she told the newspaper as she left the courtroom. Neither defense attorneys nor prosecutors addressed the media after the verdict. Rand Nolen, the lawyer representing the McMullins in a separate civil case, hailed the jury's decision as a win for the family. 'This is a beautiful family, something horrible has happened, there will be a missing chair forever. Today is a good day for them,' he told KTRK. Nolen also doubled down on his claim that there was an 'overwhelming amount of evidence' against Chambers, who was 'drinking, high, being reckless, driving down an urban street.' The jury, which heard four days of testimony during the trial, will hear additional testimony Friday before determining Chambers' punishment. Chambers is facing two to 20 years behind bars, but could also get off with just probation as she has no prior felony convictions. The defense is expected to present evidence that will sway the jury to pursue a lenient sentence, such as the fact that she is reportedly pregnant. The prosecution will likely try to paint her in a negative light and may highlight her juvenile arrest in 2008 for possessing pills at a high school, the Chronicle reported. McMullin, an audio technician and music lover, had been on a first date with Briana Iturrino when tragedy struck on April 19, 2023. They pair wanted to cap off their first date with a walk to get doughnuts from nearby Voodoo Doughnuts. As they left the shop at around 2.25am to walk half a mile back to their cars with their snacks and coffee in hand, Iturrino said she noticed a pair of headlights speeding toward them. Iturrino testified in court last week how she realized the Porsche was going to make a precarious turn and head straight toward them. But the sports car narrowly missed her, and when Iturrino went to go warn McMullin, she noticed he was gone. 'I thought he had gotten out of the way, because I couldn't find him,' Iturrino said from the witness stand. At the same time, however, she felt something graze her hip, which she at first thought was the car. Now, though, she said she realizes she felt her date being tossed 30 feet away as Chambers allegedly continued to drive before she finally crashed the car into a pole. Alfredo Ponce, the general manager of a nearby pool hall, also took the stand last Friday. He told how he heard the crash and rushed outside to help, as he has sone several other times before. But this was the worst crash he had ever seen, Ponce said, noting that the car smelled of alcohol. Police have since said she was almost four times over the legal drinking limit at the time of her arrest - about an hour after the deadly collision. Chambers has since been living in the $1.5 million three-bedroom, five-bathroom home she shares with her hedge fund manager ex-husband, Xuan Si, who filed for divorce from her just days after she was released on bail. Under the terms of her release, Chambers was not allowed to drive unless she finds a job, was forbidden from consuming alcohol and must adhere to a curfew between 8pm and 6am. But the restrictions have not seemed to stop Chambers from living a life of luxury, as she was reportedly splashing money on designer labels at the luxury department store Neiman Marcus and threw a glamorous birthday brunch for herself. The details were included in a $1 million wrongful death suit filed by McMullin's family against Chambers, Si and the four Houston bars she allegedly visited the night of the crash. The suit accused Si of negligent entrustment for purchasing Chambers the $100,000 Porsche that fatally struck their son, which was paid for in cash just days before McMullin's death. His family members argue in the civil suit that Chambers was unemployed and financially dependent on Si, and he entrusted her to operate the powerful sports car despite knowing she was an 'unfit driver' due to her alleged history of alcohol and drug use. Si has denied purchasing the car for Chambers, claiming instead that she bought the car herself using cash from their joint account. He also denied that his wife had a drinking problem, and said he had never seen her consume drugs or drive drunk. Yet records show Chambers told a social worker at the hospital following the crash she drinks four to five alcoholic beverages at least twice a week. Sebastian Lopez, a close friend of Chambers, who was in the Porsche on the night of the crash, also said in his deposition that Chambers was an 'alcoholic' and claimed Si knew she drank often and did drugs. Lopez further testified that Chambers had driven drunk on multiple occasions with him, including a 'handful' of times after she got the Porsche. Another passenger, identified in court records as Ms. Reyes, also told the McMullin family attorneys that Chambers was bragging that evening about how fast her Porsche could go, according to court records. Since learning of Chambers' alleged alcohol and drug issues, Si admitted he still hasn't encouraged her to go to rehab. 'I'm not a doctor,' he said. 'I don't infringe on people's medical decisions.' The McMullins' wrongful death lawsuit was filed in June 2023. Si filed for divorce from Chambers a month earlier, on May 3, just two weeks after the crash. Attorneys at the criminal trial are not allowed to bring up the allegations made in the civil case, which is scheduled to go to trial in April.

Scottish Government ‘utterly irresponsible’ over deposit scheme – Alister Jack

The Scottish Government was “utterly irresponsible” in they way it tried to implement its deposit return scheme (DRS), a former UK government minister has said. Giving evidence at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Friday, former Scottish secretary Lord Alister Jack said the Scottish Government had withheld “commercial information” from businesses about a risk the scheme would be blocked. Lord Jack was Scottish secretary when the UK government refused to grant the Scottish DRS an exemption for glass bottles under the Internal Market Act (IMA). This decision led to the Scottish Government changing its plans for the scheme in 2023. A UK-wide DRS is planned but it is not expected to begin before 2027. Biffa Waste Services is suing the Scottish Government at the Court of Session, seeking £166 million of reparations over the decision to delay the DRS. Lord Jack said he was “appalled” by a letter sent to businesses about the scheme by circular economy minister Lorna Slater in May 2022, which he said “misled” business about the true commercial picture. READ MORE: Legal team in Sheku Bayoh Inquiry quits days after chair Lord Bracadale “I am staggered that a letter was produced by officials and signed by a minister and sent out to companies that were investing their shareholders’ money or their own money – and lots of it – and not knowing the inherent risks of the whole picture,” he said. He added: “It was, for me, irresponsible not to tell companies that are spending money what the whole story is, and explain to them the risks. “There was a high level of risk and it was utterly irresponsible to send this letter, and that’s my opinion.” He pointed out the letters were sent after the government had been made aware it would need to apply for an exclusion from the IMA, which he said had been made clear by the UK Government in March 2022. He explained that an exclusion from the IMA had a “high bar” and required impact assessments to be carried out. Don’t miss the Scotsman’s daily newsletter However, he said the government had done “nothing” to advance this work or to warn businesses of the risks before it formally applied for an exclusion in March 2023. As soon as they knew this was required, he said “they should have sharpened up, got their exclusion request in, told their partners it was what they were doing, told their partner companies there was massive commercial risk for them”. He said that as Scottish secretary he had a number of “concerns” about the scheme, including the impact it would have on businesses and consumers, and its impact on inflation at a time of the cost-of-living crisis. Lord Jack said more than 1,000 businesses and stakeholders had written to him “saying it was going to seriously impact and damage their business, supermarkets telling me it was going to damage their business, consumers and so on”. He dismissed the suggestion his concerns were politically motivated, insisting it was “beholden” to him as Scottish secretary to “ensure our businesses and our consumers were protected”. The Conservative peer said the fact the Scottish Government was still working out how the scheme would work when it applied for an IMA exclusion in 2023 was “farcical”. He said “It was a comedy of errors. Farcical. The whole thing was farcical.”

Trans nurse allowed to use female changing rooms was trying to impregnate girlfriend at the same time, tribunal hears

A transgender nurse who was allowed to use female changing rooms had been trying to get their girlfriend pregnant at the same time, a tribunal has heard. Rose Henderson allegedly asked a colleague who was expecting a baby whether she had 'those pregnancy breasts' and wore tight boxer shorts with holes - among other misgivings - as they roamed the female space. Concerns were voiced in 2023 after 26 nurses sent a letter to hospital managers demanding their colleague be banned from the room. And an employment tribunal heard today that Henderson had told colleagues they were trying to impregnate their girlfriend, whilst sharing the changing area. Jane Peveller, a part-time staff nurse at Darlington Memorial Hospital in County Durham, said in evidence that in early 2024 she and a colleague, Lisa Lockey, were in the 'eye room,' an area where all eye patients that come through the Day Surgery Unit are admitted. She said: 'We had a conversation about Rose Henderson with a member of the theatres staff team. 'I do not know this staff member's name or precise role, but during the discussion, she told Lisa and I that Rose Henderson had informed theatre staff that he was trying to get his girlfriend pregnant.' A letter sent soon afterwards from the worried nurses to hospital managers stated: 'Rose Henderson has made no secret that he has stopped taking female hormones and is trying to inseminate his female partner.' Mrs Peveller told the tribunal: 'If it was correct it meant I would be getting changed next to a sexually active biological man. I was happy to take the information as correct. Why would my colleague lie to me?' Simon Cheetham, KC, for the Trust, asked whether she had tried to verify the information by asking Rose Henderson whether it was true or merely a rumour. She replied: 'No, I did not ask Rose Henderson about it.' Another nurse, Vivienne Robinson, was left feeling concerned when Rose Henderson spoke about her breasts while she was pregnant. Bethany Hutchison, the nurse who took the lead in bringing concerns to hospital managers, told the tribunal: 'Vivienne told me that she had been in the changing room together with Rose Henderson, whom she had never spoken to before, although she knew that Rose Henderson identified as a 'transgender woman'. 'I understood Vivienne as saying that it was just the two of them in the changing room. Vivienne said that she was pregnant at that time, and as she was in the changing room, she initially had her back to Rose Henderson but later turned around. 'According to Vivienne, Rose Henderson then said to her: "You do not look as big as this from behind". 'Vivienne was shocked and made no answer. Rose Henderson then asked her: "Have you got those large pregnancy breasts?"' Despite voicing anxiety about Rose Henderson's comments and demeanour, the nurses said they felt their concerns were not being taken seriously by management. Mrs Peveller told the tribunal: 'I attended a meeting with Tracy Atkinson, the Head of HR on 20 May 2024. There were quite a lot of DSU nurses present at the meeting, so I hoped the management would understand that a lot of people were unhappy about the situation. 'I was happy to let Bethany Hutchison take the lead in explaining our concerns and asking questions on our behalf. My impression from the meeting was that Ms Atkinson was not really taking us seriously. 'For example, when we asked how she would feel if she had to change in front of a biological male, she said it would not bother her because she had previously been in the Army. 'Then she proceeded to ask what we wanted, which was fairly simple. We explained that we wanted a gender-neutral changing room to be provided for Rose Henderson. 'Ms Atkinson indicated she was going to do something, but I did not get the impression she was going to do anything as a matter of urgency. I felt that this was wrong since the Trust had known about the situation for quite a long time and had not done anything about it.' Carly Hoy, a band 3 healthcare assistant, at the hospital, told the hearing of her stress at seeing Rose Henderson walking around in holed boxer shorts - claiming this led to anxiety which needed medication. She said: 'On many occasions I saw Rose Henderson just walking around the changing room wearing nothing except very tight black boxer shorts with holes all over them. I did not want to see that and was not paying close attention, but he would just catch your eye since it was very conspicuous as he would be walking up and down the changing room. 'I would usually see his side profile. It was very hard to ignore but as soon as I saw him, I turned away. 'I normally wear a dress rather than trousers, so to change from my uniform, I need to strip down to my underwear to put my tights on and then put my dress on. I was really uncomfortable changing if Rose Henderson was in there. I am not going to get changed in front of a biological man. 'Rose Henderson just stood there and stared at you, waiting for you to change. When he was there, I would either get my belongings from the locker and go to the toilet to change, or go outside the room, wait until they had come out and then go in and get changed. 'The problem was that there was not always time to wait. The situation has made me feel extremely anxious, and for some periods of time, I was prescribed medication for anxiety.' She said she began calling her mother or sister when she went into the changing room and if Rose Henderson was there she would make sure to stay on the phone for the duration of the time she was getting changed. The tribunal has been told hospital managers suggested Rose Henderson helped to 'educate' the nurses expressing concern. It was suggested Rose might be able to 'broaden their mindset' about trans matters and was approached to talk to female colleagues. Bethany Hutchison told the tribunal: 'The ward manager Claire Gregory informed me that she had been told that 'the Trust were in support of Rose' and we, the 26 nurses who signed the letter, had to be educated, broaden our mindset and be more inclusive. 'To add insult to injury, Claire told me that Tracy Atkinson (a hospital human resources manager) suggested that Rose Henderson should be the one to educate us, to broaden our mindset and become more inclusive. 'From what Claire told me, I understood that Rose Henderson had been approached by his managers prior to this meeting and agreed to 'educate' us himself. 'I remember this conversation with Claire so well because I was extremely upset by the news I heard from her. I realised that the management were not going to support us and were only going to label us bigots, unreasonable, unkind and not inclusive. ' Seven of the 26 nurses launched an employment tribunal against County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust (CDDFT) claiming sexual discrimination and sexual harassment. They say the Trust's stance flies in the face of a Supreme Court ruling in April of this year which found the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the Equality Act refer only to a biological woman and biological sex. The tribunal has heard they have been publicly supported by public figures, including the Health Secretary Wes Streeting, the Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch, Harry Potter writer JK Rowling, olympic swimmer Sharron Davies OBE, the businessman and philanthropist Duncan Bannatyne, the women's rights campaigner Maya Forstater, and politicians Baroness Claire Fox, Miriam Cates MP, Rosie Duffield and Lord Toby Young. Ms Hutchison told the hearing: 'All those politicians publicly expressed their unreserved support for our demand to have a safe single-sex changing room at work.' The hearing, expected to last a month, continues.

British IT consultant who 'couldn't bear to live with non Muslims' so flew business class to Syria to fight for Islamist terrorists is jailed for nine years

An IT consultant who flew business class to Syria to fight alongside Islamist terrorists has been jailed for nine years. Isa Giga, 32 from Hounslow in west London, devastated his family when he told them he was going to Birmingham but instead quit his job and travelled to Syria via Turkey in 2015. He then sent them a bombshell email informing them he was travelling to the war torn country and hoped to become a martyr with Islamists from Jaysh al Fath - an alliance of anti-Assad forces which included al-Qaeda linked groups. 'I have come here to fight for jihad,' he told them. Today at the Old Bailey, Giga has been convicted of preparation of terrorist acts after claiming he only went to Syria in 2015 to live an Islamic life. The Recorder of London, Judge Mark Lucraft sentenced Giga to nine years with an extended licence period of one year. He will be subject to notification requirements for terrorist offenders for 15 years. Prosecutor Joel Smith, KC, said: 'By 2015, Syria was in the middle of a bloody, brutal and long-running civil war. 'That civil war involved many groups and factions and one of those groups was Jaysh al Fath. In English that translates as "The Army of Conquest"'. Mr Smith described Jaysah as 'an alliance of armed, Islamist factions including an Al-Qaeda affiliated group whose aim was, by military force, to establish an Islamic State in the area of Idlib, in Syria'. He continued: 'One of the main groups that was part of Jaysh was called Jabhat al-Nusra. They attempted to appeal to foreign fighters by portraying themselves as a more "moderate" alternative to ISIS. 'They were intending to overthrow the Syrian government by force to establish an Islamic State.' Mr Smith said multiple messages show Giga admitting he was involved with Jaysh and jihad. In 2015 Giga was 22 and living with his parents and sister in west London. He handed in his notice at the business company ANS on August 2015 after five months. One week after finishing work on September 7 2015 Giga flew from Heathrow to Asana in the south of Turkey via Istanbul. He paid £808.86 for a business class return ticket with no intention of returning on that flight. Giga's family gave police access to emails he sent them. He emailed his sister to say he had dropped his phone and it was not working on September 8 2015. The next day Giga's sister emailed him saying she had tried to contact three hotels in Birmingham to get hold of him saying: 'How are we supposed to contact you? parents aren't happy and nor am I'. Giga had not told his family he had quit his job but did so via email. He said: 'On sunday night I did not go to bham I went to ibis in hayes and I took a flight to Turkey on late Monday. 'I crossed the border into Syria on tuesday evening. 'I have come here to fight for jihad. I'm based in idlib province and I fight for Jaysh al Fath which is the rebel coalition which includes the free Syrian army up to al-Qaeda linked groups 'I have come here to fight against assad and also to fight against isis. I cant sit at home when fellow muslims are in need and their religion is in danger.' He said he did not need his parents permission to fight for jihad and said he needed to emigrate from Britain 'where I cannot bear to live with non Muslims.' Giga added that he loved them all so much and that it was 'painful for me to leave and say goodbye'. He continued: 'But ultimately a muslim knows this life is a transition to an everlasting life and my life belongs to the one who created me. Not the ones who gave birth to me. Allah has commanded jihad. I am the servant and must obey. 'I have planned this for about a year now. No I was not brainwashed by am internet personality. I came to jihad after reading the quran and books by classical scholars. 'I am in good hands here. At the moment I live with some westerners and some Arabs. I start military work in 3 weeks. 'This won't be easy for you guys but once again I love you all so much but religion comes first. Hopefully we will spend eternity together in Jannah.' His sister replied: 'Can not believe you have done this Isa. We loved you so much gave you total trust and you have just gone and thrown it our faces.' His dad said: 'My Dearest Isa, We all hope and pray you are well. 'I will make this message short, but request as a father who always loved you from the bottom of my heart. 'I have tried in every little detail to hold your hand and guide you forward to adulthood. 'Please don't do anything that will break my or your mothers or families heart, stay within the bounds of true Islam and humanity, stay away from extremism and follow the Sunnah. 'If ever you need your families help you contact us without wasting a minute (any time day or night). 'I am returning the money I borrowed from you last week minus a few deductions so that you can feed and clothe yourself and maybe if you don't like the place use some of it to return to your family. 'Keep in touch and take special care of yourself.' He sent £4,500 to his son's Lloyds bank account, the court heard. Giga emailed his sister on 17 October 2015 saying: 'I wanted to send you another email a while back but I don't have much internet access anymore because of the russian planes and drones all around us. 'I wanted to send an email without seeing you initial reply because i can't bare to see words from you guys which show that you are upset, i did see the first reply, but at the moment i don't have the strength to see whatever other emails have been sent. 'Honestly i love you all so much and even when writing this i can't hold back the tears, if it wasn't a religious obligation for me to have gone of course i would never have left, more than anything what i want is to spend eternity with you guys. 'I know it probably seems like empty words to you but that is far from the case.' He told them that if they did not hear from him for more than two months they should assume he had passed away and that he hoped 'more than anything to gain martyrdom while fighting against isis or against the Assad regime'. 'I hope more than anything to gain martyrdom while fighting against isis or against the assad regime but i fear death as much as anyone else. Giga's father travelled to Rehanley, Turkey to try and contact his son and sent a letter to him begging for him to return. 'I can't bear to see your mum cry everyday and be depressed and her life destroyed,' he said. Giga replied: 'I have not come here with the intention of returning back. 'I will not walk away from Syria, how can I walk away when there is death all around me, I feel like paradise is very close here, just two days ago one of my friends from the UK was martyred while in a battle. 'Even though I long to meet my parents, more than anything else I want to enter into paradise without being punished, and I want to be able to intercede for my family. 'You may think that me leaving you guys means I don't love you, but one of he primary reasons I am motivated to be here is I want to spend eternity with you guys in paradise.' In the email Giga included a link to a book by Shaykh Abdullah Azzam who was a mentor for Osama Bin Laden in his youth. He continued to insist he had gone to Syria simply to carry out 'private religious study.' Giga, of Hounslow, west London, denied but was convicted of preparation of terrorist acts.

Stalker who accused business owners of affairs, murder bids, slashing her tyres and poisoning her cat in 'unrelenting' years-long campaign is jailed

A social media consultant who stalked two business owners and launched an 'unrelenting' campaign of harassment by posting offensive and false accusations online was today jailed for two years and four months. Sam Wall, 55, made a series of fake claims about her 'totally innocent' victims, accusing them of having extra-marital affairs, trying to kill her, breaking windows at her home, slashing her car tyres and even poisoning her cat. In one particularly offensive post she even falsely branded a businessman a sexual predator online. Both had either met Wall fleetingly at conferences or simply connected with her over social media, yet she inexplicably targeted them for years. She posted the malicious lies on LinkedIn, X and Facebook, to her 30,000 followers, in rants that were sometimes more than 21,000 words long. One victim – motivational speaker Brad Burton, 52, who met Wall for just two minutes when he posed for a selfie with her at a business event - said he was driven to the brink and even contemplated suicide because of the prolific 'trashing' of his reputation online. Wall's own posts claimed Mr Burton was using his business to destroy and gaslight her – at one stage she even falsely claimed he had been arrested and sent to jail for harassment. In reality, he lost revenue and his company collapsed into insolvency because of her 'relentless' attacks, which included falsely labelling him a sex offender and bully. Another victim – tech entrepreneur Naomi Timperley, 53, who also only saw Wall in passing at two business events – was subjected to similar 'distressing' messages. Wall even falsely claimed to have attempted suicide because of Ms Timperley's apparent behaviour. Ms Timperley said she and her husband and children had been left 'scared' and constantly looking over their shoulders because of Wall's 'hideous' harassment. Jailing Wall, who has been diagnosed with a chronic delusional mental illness, to 28 months imprisonment, Judge Neil Usher told her she had unleashed an 'unrelenting barrage of abuse' against her victims which was designed to 'maximise fear and distress.' 'The breadth and scale of your online campaign…is breathtaking,' the judge, sitting at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court, said. 'This was a deliberate and calculated campaign of online stalking of the most egregious kind.' The judge also made Wall, of Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire, the subject of an indefinite restraining order. The court heard that Wall admitted three offences – two of stalking and one of posting false messages about Mr Burton and Ms Timperley - at a previous hearing in November. They were committed between January 2019 and July 2023, but the Mail has spoken to several other victims, not part of the court case, who were also targeted by Wall up to four years earlier. One woman, personal assistant Lauren Dale, 31, said she was stalked by Wall around 2015 and 2016. She sent Ms Dale gifts, such as cakes and plants, was spotted at bus stops close to her place of work, sent abusive Tweets accusing her of sleeping with her boss, and even contacted her clients to bad mouth her. Like Mr Burton and Ms Timperley, Wall also bizarrely accused Ms Dale of poisoning her cat. Ms Dale said she believed Wall had also been stalking her boss at the digital agency where they worked and had targeted her in spite, after she once turned Wall away from their office. The harassment became so bad that it forced her off social media and to switch jobs. Ms Dale eventually reported Wall to Greater Manchester Police, in March 2016, after she sent her a death threat online which said: 'RIP LAUREN DALE, TICK TOCK.' The court heard officers served Wall with a formal warning, known as a police information notice, and Ms Dale blocked her on social media. She didn't hear from her again but contacted Mr Burton and Ms Timperley after reading about their ordeals at Wall's hands on LinkedIn earlier this year. Today Ms Dale, of Oldham, said the fact that Wall had been jailed was 'good enough for now,' but she added: 'Whether it stops her in the future…I hope so. I just hope she gets some mental help where she is.' Mr Burton and Ms Timperley both also said they were 'relieved' that the judge had made an example of Wall and sent her to prison. Ms Timperley said: 'It was important for Brad and myself that she received a custodial sentence, so that she understood the consequences of her actions. 'It's been a very, very long process to get to today and incredibly difficult. But I do have a sense of relief.' Earlier, Nicholas Flanagan, prosecuting, told the court that the first and only time Mr Burton met Wall was in January 2019 at a networking event at Aston Villa Football Club. He said he had a brief two-minute chat with her, engaging in 'small talk about how exciting the forthcoming day would be.' He also posed for a selfie with her and another delegate. But some months later, at the end of 2019, colleagues told Mr Burton about posts being made by Wall online. At first he tried to ignore them, but as they continued, he sent a legal letter, urging her to stop, but Wall refused. 'The attacks then intensified,' Mr Flanagan said. 'The defendant claimed that Mr Burton had poisoned her cat, had continually called her and made claims that he was having affairs. This was particularly distressing, as Mr Burton is happily married. 'Further attacks by the defendant alleged he was facing a custodial sentence – as well as being a sex offender.' Wall was eventually arrested, in September 2022, and denied wrongdoing and repeated her claims that Mr Burton was harassing her and trying to destroy her life. She was bailed but, when that expired a month later, she re-started her attacks. 'This included claims that Mr Burton was in prison, and that he had a psychopathic twin brother who was covering for him whilst he was in jail,' Mr Flanagan added. Wall also posted fake messages which claimed Ms Timperley had also targeted her and warned: 'Time to take criminal action with you all. You won't like it.' Mr Flanagan said: 'Ms Timperley took this as a direct threat and it left her terrified.' Burton, a married father of three, broke down as he read a victim impact statement to the court which outlined how he and his family had been left traumatised by Wall's actions. 'For four plus years, her relentless campaign of lies, harassment and character assassination has dominated every corner of our existence, mentally, emotionally, financially, and digitally,' he said. 'Her actions have damaged my career and invaded every aspect of my personal life. 'The stress, sleepless nights, dread have pushed me to one of the darkest periods of my life.' Ms Timperley also described her 'peace being stolen' as messages came in on her mobile phone 'until even silence felt unsafe.' 'For over two and a half years, I was hunted through hashtags, chased through timelines, cornered in comment sections, my name dragged through the dirt of digital spaces,' she said. 'The internet was weaponised against me. Used to intimidate, to control, to humiliate. Digital stalking is still stalking. That fear is real, even when the threats are typed, not spoken. That harm is harm whether it's hands or hashtags.' Mr Burton also criticised social media companies, who he claimed had 'failed' to take action or remove Wall's upsetting posts. 'Social media companies need to do better and maybe if they had, we wouldn't all be where we all are today,' he said.

Kerry legend Kieran Donaghy joins Jack O'Connor's backroom team for 2026

Kerry manager Jack O’Connor has added county legend Kieran Donaghy to his backroom team in a clear statement of intent from the All-Ireland champions for 2026. The four-time Sam Maguire Cup winner in his playing days has spent the past five seasons as part of Kieran McGeeney’s coaching set-up in Armagh. The Orchard county reached the holy grail themselves in 2024, adding to Donaghy’s reputation, and he now joins the Kingdom in advance of the defence of their title. “Jack O’Connor, Kerry senior football team manager, has confirmed the addition of former player Kieran Donaghy to the backroom team for next season,” read a short statement from Kerry GAA. “Kieran’s welcome involvement further enhances an already strong support team. We wish them the best of luck for 2026.” Donaghy was a Kerry minor in 2001, and a Kingdom U21 in 2003 and 2004, before being brought into the senior panel by O’Connor during his first term at the helm. Initially known as a midfielder, the Austin Stacks man was catapulted into the number 14 jersey during the 2006 championship, and the rest is history. Making the position his own, and becoming one of the great full-forwards in the modern game, Donaghy won four All-Ireland senior medals before his inter-county retirement in late 2018. At the conclusion of an illustrious career, he also garnered three All Star awards, and ended up making 139 league and championship appearances in the Kerry jersey. At club level, Donaghy was part of the Austin Stacks team that lifted the Bishop Moynihan Cup as Kingdom county champions in 2014 and 2021. Initially a performance coach with the Galway senior hurlers, Donaghy also joint-managed MTU Kerry in the 2020 Sigerson Cup, before making the move to Armagh. Hugely popular with players, the 42-year-old’s enthusiasm, coaching pedigree, and experience outside the county, will be a sizeable addition to the Kingdom fold. In late August, O’Connor agreed a new two-year deal to remain as Kerry senior manager, even though he had originally hinted at stepping down after the All-Ireland final win over Donegal. Donaghy now joins a backroom team that already includes selector/head coach Cian O’Neill, selectors Aodán MacGearailt and James Costello, and selector/assistant coach Pa McCarthy. Jason McGahan and Arthur Fitzgerald are responsible for Kerry’s strength and conditioning, while 2014net-minder Brian Kelly is the goalkeeping coach. Donaghy’s addition to the mix will inevitably prompt speculation that the Tralee man will be one of the candidates in the race to succeed O’Connor when his latest spell is due to conclude in 2027.

“When women lead and lift each other, we create lasting impact in our professions, our communities and the world we shape.” Dr Saira Ali FLI FRSA From boardrooms and classrooms to courtrooms and community halls, a formidable new force has emerged: the ‘BPA Lionesses’ – a powerhouse of female leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers rewriting the rules of leadership and collaboration across the North. Born out of the Business Power Empowering Women Awards 2025 held in July 2025, the BPA Lionesses began as a winners’ circle – a glittering celebration of success and resilience. But what started as recognition on stage has evolved into something far more enduring: a movement of solidarity, peer-ship and circle of trust. Led by the ‘BPA Lionesses Consortium’, the BPA Lionesses will deliver a series of mentoring ‘Coffee & Collaborations’ women-only safe-space sessions tackling real-world challenges faced by women across all career paths. From access to finance and leadership barriers, to confidence and cultural expectations, sessions have been carefully curated and designed to equip participants with practical tools, peer support, and confidence to thrive. “This isn’t just a network – it’s a movement of purpose. It’s a movement of intergenerational support – particularly for South Asian women,” said Andleeb Hanif, Chair of the Business Power Awards and Managing Editor of Asian Express Newspaper. “Our incredible BPA Lionesses bring together consulting members from diverse professional backgrounds including law, education, health, finance, media and the creative industries – reflecting the richness and diversity of Yorkshire’s business landscape. We’re all united by the same purpose – empowering other women to rise! Andleeb adds: “Many of us in this group had to grow in our careers challenging stereotypes, glass ceilings, facing cultural barriers and patriarchy all alone – we don’t want that for the next generation. “We’re creating spaces where women can grow, collaborate, offer intergenerational advice and support… not just for today, but for the future.” “As a leader in education for the last 30 years, contributing outside of my profession and being a part of the BPA Lionesses Consortium is a privilege,” Rizwana Mahmood MBE adds. “Being surrounded by such talented, committed and authentic women is heartening and inspiring to say the least. With an amalgamation of such talent, I am certain that the consortium will become a movement to execute much needed positive change.” A blueprint for empowerment At the heart of the initiative is a commitment to intergenerational mentorship – connecting established professionals with younger women seeking guidance in business, education and social enterprise. Upcoming sessions include ‘Work-Life Balance & Wellbeing, ‘Money Matters: Financial Literacy & Independence’, ‘Leadership & Mentorship Circles’ and ‘Unspoken Barriers’ – each designed to equip women with the tools, confidence and peer support to thrive. Rifhat Malik MBE, director & co-founder of Give a Gift comments: “Empowering women matters deeply to me because I’ve seen how confidence, opportunity, and support can transform lives – not just for women, but for entire families and communities. “I’m passionate about the BPA Lionesses initiative because I believe every woman deserves the chance to realise her potential, use her voice, and create her own path without barriers holding her back. Sarah Khan-Bashir MBE, solicitor & founder of SKB Law adds: “As a South Asian woman in the legal profession, I’ve seen first-hand how courage, community and representation can change the trajectory of a career. “Being part of the BPA Lionesses Consortium allows me to champion those values in a meaningful way. This initiative celebrates everyday ambition and honours the people who quietly build, create and uplift others while balancing life’s many pressures. “In the long run, I believe the BPA Lionesses can open doors for diverse entrepreneurs, give them the confidence to take up space, and spark a culture where success is shared, supported and truly inclusive.” Dr Saira Ali comments: “Being part of the BPA Lionesses is both a privilege and a purpose. As a landscape architect and change-maker, my work has always been about creating spaces where people feel seen, valued and connected – and that same ethos defines this incredible network. “The Lionesses embody solidarity and empowerment, showing how transformative it is when women come together to uplift one another. This network offers a circle of trust, collaboration and growth – shaping a more inclusive, equitable and connected future. “When women lead and lift each other, we create lasting impact in our professions, our communities and the world we shape.” To subscribe to the BPA Lionesses Newsletter and events, send an email to: bpalionesses@businesspowerawards.co.uk

The cherished Edinburgh family restaurant business that's still a favourite after 55 years

The cherished Edinburgh family restaurant business that's still a favourite after 55 years

If you’re an Edinburger, there’s a decent chance that you’ve found yourself in at least one of the Vittoria Group restaurants. There’s their first, Vittoria on the Walk, which opened back in 1970, as well as wine bar Divino, all-day café Taste of Italy, Bertie’s Proper Fish and Chips, Brunswick Book Club, and their baby - the most recent opening, with the year-old Landy’s Fish and Chips. As they celebrate 55 years and four generations in the hospitality business, we asked Tony Crolla - son of Alberto and Dina, who opened the first restaurant, and current owner of the Vittoria Group - to tell us more. What was it like, growing up in the restaurant business? From an early age, I learned the importance and value of hard work and consistency from my parents, who founded the business. While other children spent their summer and Christmas holidays relaxing, I was either working or spending time in the restaurant. When my parents opened Vittoria on The Walk, it quickly became a part of the community. I had little free time but didn’t mind as our regular guests who visited often felt more like extended family. How has the food scene in Edinburgh changed over the decades? Back in the day, guests were much more loyal. Everyone had their favourite local Italian, pub, or Chinese that they’d visit week after week. Edinburgh has changed so much over the years, even since the early Noughties, and the sheer number of restaurants and the diversity of cuisine is fantastic for locals. With so much choice out there, it just means we have to keep working harder to stay relevant, consistent, and deserving of our guests’ loyalty. What's your favourite of the seven restaurants and why? I’m very parental when it comes to our restaurants - I love them all and take great care to protect their reputations. They really do feel like my children in many ways; some give us more challenges and worries from time to time, while others seem to just tick along nicely and look after themselves. Each venue has its own personality, and I take pride in seeing how they’ve grown. What have been the toughest times? And the best times? The pandemic closures were definitely the toughest period I’ve experienced. Being told by the government to close for public safety was incredibly hard on the business, our family, our staff, and our guests. The uncertainty was challenging, as we often had no idea what would happen next, and navigating the rising costs and inflation that came after certainly brought its own set of challenges. On the other hand, the good memories outweigh the hard ones. Opening new venues, hosting celebrations, and receiving awards have all been highlights. But most of all, watching my sons Alberto and Leandro grow up in the business and now take over the day-to-day running has been a true joy. I’ve also met and employed so many good people along the way, many of whom have stayed with us for years and progressed into senior roles. Seeing people grow with the business has always been really satisfying. Any celebrity customers? Over the years, we’ve welcomed all sorts of ‘celebrity’ guests. From royalty to football and rugby stars to politicians, including every First Minister of Scotland. Plenty of Edinburgh’s well-known faces have also popped in, and on one occasion, the actor Gerard Butler was spotted enjoying a meal at Divino Enoteca - moments like that are always unforgettable. Any favourite customers? Every guest feels special, but what I particularly love is seeing those who first came in as children with their parents, now grown up and visiting with their own families. It’s a wonderful reminder of the passing of time and fills me with pride to see that connection continue across generations. Vittoria on the Walk especially has been a part of so many family stories over the years, and it’s something we really treasure. Tell us about the 32 Vittoria babies that have been born, because couples have met while working at your restaurants. Is working there an aphrodisiac? Maybe! If you love what you do, work can definitely lead to love. Many of our staff have met their partners while working with us and have gone on to start families, which is incredibly rewarding to see. It’s also wonderful that so many former team members keep in touch years after leaving, showing the lasting impact we can have as employers. Where do you see the business in another 55 years? I hope it continues to grow sustainably and brings enjoyment to everyone involved. There will no doubt be challenges along the way and tough moments that eventually pass, giving way to happier days again. The future really rests with my sons and their partners, and our grandchildren, with Angela and me there to support them. For us, it’s always been family first, business forever. This year, as we celebrate our 55th anniversary, we’ve also started something new, called Vittoria Giving Back, where we pledge £1,000 a month to local projects that need support. It feels right to give back to the community that has supported us for so many years, and it’s a way to keep the family values and the people a focus for generations to come. www.vittoriagroup.com Read more: “I’m always asked where to find Edinburgh’s best Sunday lunch, now I know what to tell them” Read more: “I visited a wonderful new Edinburgh cafe that’s made me love my city’s lively coffee scene even more” Read more: “I moved to Leith two months ago, and this is what I’ve learnt about Edinburgh’s ‘coolest’ area”

Time for this accidental sports journalist to fall into another phase of life

It started on the first Monday of 1998. Stepping into an office in Terenure for the first time while wearing a black velvet suit bought for 60 punts in the Dunne's Store sale. Start as you mean to go wrong. A job had come up in The Star and, despite dubious fashion tastes, I got the nod. During the 1990s up to then, I'd worked as a teacher in Italy, as a barman in Dublin, gone back to college to do a Masters in film which was quickly abandoned, and had spells as a journalist with a radio station in Dublin, three newspapers in London and one in Cork. So I was moving around regularly, or couldn't settle - take your pick. Thought it would be the same in The Star, so how did I end up as the longest serving member of staff? Maybe I got institutionalised somewhere along the way. Whatever. This is my last piece, written on my last day. Why am I going? To borrow a book title of a man from my home parish of Gleann Cholm Cille, it's partly due to rotha mór an tsaoil. I had open heart surgery in 2023 and stage four cancer this year. That sharpens the focus and the mind. There are things I want to do, and that means leaving the comfort zone behind. There's a way to do these kind of pieces. Detail the number of Olympic Games and World Cups and All-Ireland finals and Six Nations and world title fights covered, and all that jazz...and talk of how it was a blessing and a privilege. Maybe throw in a photograph of lanyards and accreditation passes to add to the humblebrag (a word that wasn't invented until I was in this job for 12 years). I have a confession to make, I don't think it was a privilege. I don't really feel I was lucky. Don't want to go all Roy Keane on it but it was the job. If I didn't cover an Olympics well, I wouldn't be going to the next one. Someone else would get the gig. That's the way things operate - or how they should operate, anyway. Here's the thing: I never had to qualify to go to an Olympics. No journalist had to do so. There aren't A and B qualifying standards of typing speed. As for the lanyards etc, I have the match ticket from the 2005 Champions League final - because there will never be a game like that again - and that's it. I am not a hoarder. I love sentimentality in country music, but nowhere else. Of course, it was a buzz to be there to watch Sonia O'Sullivan dash to Olympic silver in Sydney or to witness Katie Taylor's ear-bleeding victory at London 2012 or to see the unlikely lad Jason McAteer sinking the Dutch or to be up close and personal during the year of the Saipan bother or to feel the stands shake when Kevin McManamon rattled the Kerry net in 2011 or to gaze on in wonder when Shane O'Donnell's smile transformed the hurling world. But doing the job right was what mattered. Trying to find the words to do all of the above justice. That was the job. Usually, I failed. That's the reality that comes with the pressure of daily journalism. Going back over old pieces is a painful exercise. For the first decade, at least, I veered between poor and mediocre, for the most part. Day after day after day. Things have improved a bit in recent years but, even if chippers no longer wrap a one and one in old newspaper, what we do is still as ephemeral and flimsy and transient. If there were five pieces in a year I was happy with, that was a great year. That is not a lie. Adrenaline and being under the cosh did help. So many of us curse deadlines but struggle to write a sentence without the pressure of one. When big stories come along, the pressure is greater and that often gets the best out of you. It wasn't just about glory days. There was as big a buzz in chasing the stories in Irish sport when things went badly wrong - like the omnishambles of the double whammy of Pat Hickey and the Irish boxers in Rio, like the house of cards built by John Delaney, like Daniel Kinahan's takeover of professional boxing, like trying to show the real face of Conor McGregor. I know some will reach for that Simpsons meme of 'old man shakes fist at cloud' but there have been a lot of changes for the worse in sports journalism. It's now common on air, in print, and online for reporters to use 'we' when talking of Ireland teams. The few greybeards that are still around who were reared in the sean-nós cringe at this - there should always be a distance between us and them, and national teams should be a 'them' too. The narrowing of focus in sports media is a major issue too. Even in a much bigger market like the UK, specialist correspondents have been laid off for years. In Ireland, GAA, soccer, rugby, horseracing and golf dominate the sports pages, but even the latter pair are feeling the squeeze. The coverage of sports like athletics and boxing - which have a long and proud history here and are full of stories - has been squeezed. But we should study closely what has happened to, say, the boxing media. Fan sites and YouTubers have been cultivated and are given ringside seats because they dutifully cheerlead and repeat whatever nonsense is fed to them. Experienced and competent reporters have been either refused accreditation or seated in the Gods as punishment for asking relevant questions. Rather than seeing that as a salutary lesson in how not to operate, the real fear is that there are other sports who will look to follow what boxing has done. The sports media doesn't reflect the changing Ireland, either. In 1998, there was one female sports editor. In 2025, there is still just one. There are as many women working as sports reporters in newspapers now as 28 years ago. Here's a secret, it's not very many. Where are the sports reporters from different cultural backgrounds? Irish sport is full of star performers from migrant families, but that change isn't reflected in the media. Also, where are the mavericks? Paul Kimmage started out as a plumber, Eamon Carr was the drummer in a rock 'n' roll band. Journalism needs cranks and eccentrics. We should be wary of going on about an interviewee being 'honest' too. Honesty is always selective. My experience with Ryan Giggs taught me that. Somehow, I got a one-on-one interview with him in 2008 in Manchester the week before Manchester United's Champions League final with Chelsea. When I came back, I was talking up his honesty to all and sundry. Subsequent events made it clear that I was being played. I was far from alone. Truth to tell, I was always an accidental sports journalist, falling into the trade by accident. People are what interest me most and I got to meet so many great and fascinating ones. There were many memorable nights out with Eamon Dunphy that blurred into one, but there is photographic evidence of us strong-arming Tom Jones into a sing-song. Somehow, along the way, I managed to have a row with the nicest man in Irish sport, Sean Boylan. A few months into the job, I asked Stuart Carolan - later to write Love/Hate - to pen a column in the guise of his comic character 'Navan Man', previewing a Meath/Offaly Leinster Championship quarter-final. The piece wasn't overly kind to our Offaly brethren... Boylan got hold of my number and ripped me to shreds. I remember him bellowing 'are you a man of honour?' and I spent the rest of that day questioning my life choices. Things improved from there, though I did get punched in the mixed zone after the 2005 Champions League final while standing in front of a bemused Jamie Carragher with his medal around his neck. And a former Ireland assistant manager once tapped me on the shoulder to inform me that I am a REDACTED. Who knows what's next? I certainly couldn't have predicted what was coming over the past few years. I'll finish with the words of a former teacher, the late Brendan Kennelly. ''Though we live in a world that dreams of ending that always seems about to give in Something that will not acknowledge conclusion insists that we forever begin.

Celtic rocked as star player faces 5-month lay-off as injury crisis deepens ahead of Hearts title clash

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is facing a five-month absence after injuring his Achilles during Thursday’s 2-1 win over Sturm Graz. Carter-Vickers was carried off the pitch by a physio at the of the Europa League match and manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the centre-half has suffered a significant injury. It comes as a major blow for Celtic ahead of Sunday’s top-of-the-table Premiership match against Hearts at Tynecastle, with the defending champions - who trial the Jam Tarts by five points - also set to without right-back Alistair Johnston plus forwards Daizen Maeda and Kelechi Iheanacho due to hamstring issues. “It’s not great news,” Rodgers said on Friday afternoon. “He looks like he’s done his Achilles which could mean he’s out for anything between three and five months. So we’re just awaiting confirmation of that. “Cam’s been a very important member of the squad and been a great centre-half for the club. But I always think what it does is opens the door and gives an opportunity to someone else. “That opportunity came to Liam Scales and he’s been brilliant during my time here and you saw his performance last night, he was so good. “He's been my most consistent player [second time around]. He's been absolutely fantastic. He's been a real robust stalwart for the team. “You see how strong he was against Graz. He can score goals. I said before that we need everyone to contribute to goals. The goal comes from us playing at the tempo. We get the ball in, we get it going quickly. And then he makes the finish look a lot easier than what it was. “I thought he was one of our really outstanding players.”

'We were taught how to sexually please husbands as child brides aged just 14'

A disturbing ritual once used to groom child brides for "marriage" is now being transformed by young women in Zimbabwe who are rejecting the custom that schooled children in sexually satisfying their adult spouses. "Nhanga" - a local expression meaning "girls' bedroom" - was traditionally a female-only environment used to instruct teenage girls in submission. The guarded hut served for "secret, musical rites of passage render young girls eligible for lobolo, bride-price negotiation," wrote Thomas F. Johnston, in The Secret Music of Nhanga Rites. He added: "Through song, mime, and mild forms of physical mutilation, the old women overseers of the Nhanga teach initiates how to please the husband sexually, and rehearse them in the duties o f a junior wife: carry water long distances, clear village fireplaces o f ashes, gather firewood, tend the fields, pound maize in the mortar, and show humility to senior co-wives." In Shamva, this custom is being revolutionised, reports the Express . Here, the Nhanga is "a safe space, every girl feels free," 18-year-old Anita Razo, who joined the group at 14 and now mentors younger girls, told the Associated Press. Within the shelter, guided by a mentor, the girls candidly discuss sexuality, child marriage, teen pregnancy, gender bias, education, economic empowerment, and the law. The objective is to strengthen girls against child marriage in the nation where one in three girls marries before 18, according to the United Nations Children's Fund, calling it "a national emergency demanding urgent action". "Zimbabwe and other African nations have banned child marriage, but destitution, sluggish law enforcement and cultural and religious traditions make it difficult to eliminate it entirely. Samantha Chidodo was coerced into an abusive marriage at 17 to a man almost 10 years her senior, but now she is 26 and studying her final year of law. "All I wanted was to play and think of my future. Suddenly I had to be a mother and wife," she revealed at a camp that combined tent sessions with a "girls and goals" football tournament, "I didn't even know what to do. I would be dead asleep, oblivious that I needed to breastfeed. A woman next door would take the crying baby, feed him and return him to the sleeping teenage mother," she explained. After two years, she departed, but was shunned by her neighbours. With the backing of Rozaria Memorial Trust, she returned to school and became one of the modern Nhanga trailblazers." "Initially, we were only about 20 girls. Almost 90% of us did well, some went to college, others started projects. The community began to see our power, and encouraged their children to join," she said. "Nhanga is now seen as cool. " Now more than 200 girls in her village take part with many schools across Zimbabwe adopting the model. Xmas Savanhu, a local village headman, said leaders now enforce rules against early marriage and offenders reported to police and forced to pay a cow as a fine held in trust by the chief for the girl's education. He said: "This ensures she can return to school without financial worries." Enet Tini, a teacher and mentor for girls whose school has adopted this model, said that despite their efforts and government policy, cultural attitudes persist. "The gap that we have lies with the adults. They view pregnancy or child marriage as indiscipline so they think the girls should be punished," she added. Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda, deputy executive director at U.N. Women and founder of the Rozaria Memorial Trust, labelled child marriage as "essentially rape and sexual exploitation" and a global issue, but "much higher in Africa." "Laws are important ... but it is critically essential to reach to the girls themselves, to do the shift in the social norms in our communities," said Gumbonzvanda, who established Rozaria Memorial Trust in 2007 in memory of her late mother, who was married at 13. Razo, the young mentor, concurs that the long-term solution should involve the young girls, stating "If we can pressure each other into behaving badly, then we can also influence each other to act positively. "
