Breaking Down Tom Aspinall vs. Jon Jones After Watching Both Face Ciryl Gane

At UFC 321, fans witnessed arguably the most unsatisfying main event ending of the year. With just 30 seconds left in the first round, Ciryl Gane accidentally double eye-poked Tom Aspinall, forcing the bout to be ruled a no-contest. As a result, the Brit retained his heavyweight title, but the fight left a space in everyone’s minds — what could’ve happened if the fight had moved on? While many fans were understandably disappointed, some also pointed out how, for the first time, Aspinall seemed to be facing a real challenge. Heading into his first title defense, most people expected Aspinall to make quick work of Gane, just as he had with everyone else before. The reigning heavyweight champ’s power had already built his reputation as the man who could potentially flatline Jon Jones. However, the Abu Dhabi main event told a slightly different story. ‘Bon Gamin’ actually managed to take a round off the defending champion, proving that Aspinall wasn’t untouchable after all. Because of that, the doubts have started creeping in. Can Tom Aspinall really beat ‘Bones’ if they ever share the Octagon? Tom Aspinall’s UFC 321 performance vs Ciryl Gane isn’t a fair comparison for Jon Jones fight Before Tom Aspinall stepped into the cage with Ciryl Gane in the UFC 321 main event, he finished every single opponent in the first round and earned a reputation as an unstoppable juggernaut. However, after defending his interim title by knocking out Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in July 2024, the Brit found himself sidelined for over a year before returning against Gane in Abu Dhabi. That long layoff might’ve played a part in what looked like a touch of ring rust. Looking closely at the fight, Aspinall still moved well, bouncing on his feet, but his punches seemed just a bit more labored than usual. Even Daniel Cormier pointed it out on commentary. As the round went on, though, Aspinall started to find his rhythm, landing some solid combinations. Still, credit where it’s due, Ciryl Gane looked sharper than ever. His stand-up had clearly evolved, and his takedown defense showed massive improvement. ‘Bon Gamin’ smartly worked behind his jab and leg kicks, making it difficult for Aspinall to close the distance. He kept his strikes compact and precise, never overextending, which actually allowed him to read and stuff the champ’s takedown attempts. In short, Aspinall wasn’t facing the same Gane who froze against Jon Jones at UFC 285. This was a more calculated, cautious, and technically evolved version.

Vinicius Jr responds to criticism following unsavoury El Clasico clashes

Vinicius Jr has insisted that he “didn’t want to offend anyone” after he was embroiled in post-match clashes with Barcelona players following Real Madrid’s El Clasico win. The 25-year-old cut a frustrated figure following his 72nd-minute substitution, going straight down the tunnel before re-emerging for the final whistle at the Santiago Bernabeu. After his side sealed a 2-1 win over their fierce rivals, Vinicius was one of a number of Real Madrid players to confront their Barcelona counterparts, chiefly 18-year-old Lamine Yamal. Vinicius was among five players to see yellow as tensions boiled over, while Real's substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was shown a red card for his part in the brawl. "El Clasico is like that," Vinicius told Real Madrid TV. "There are a lot of things happening on and off the pitch. "We try to maintain a balance, but it's not always possible. We didn't want to offend anyone, not Barca players, nor the fans. "We know that when we step on to the pitch, we have to defend our side, and that's how it was today." Yamal has stoked the fire between the two Spanish giants before kick-off, suggesting that Real Madrid “cheat” and “complain in a televised interview. Manager Xabi Alonso had declined to comment on the jibe, instead choosing to focus on a game that saw Los Blancos go five points clear at the top. However, tensions appear to be rising between Alonso and Vincius, who following his substitution was reportedly caught on broadcast cameras saying: "Always me! I'm leaving the team. It's better if I leave, I'm leaving." Alonso revealed that the Brazilian’s reaction be “talked about” internally while playing down the post-match fracas. "I interpret it with normality. We don't have to make too much of it,” the Spaniard said. "It's the tension of the moment, for them and us. These scuffles have always happened."

Chicago's progressive Democrat mayor says it is 'racist' and 'nasty' to use the term 'illegal alien'

Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson slammed a reporter's choice of words as 'racist' after he called undocumented immigrants 'illegal aliens.' Johnson labeled the term 'nasty' in a press briefing on Friday, after a reporter asked about city spending related to 'illegal aliens' that he was allegedly supposed to file with the White House. Video posted to the mayor's Instagram account showed Johnson immediately responding to the question as soon as the reporter finished speaking. The reporter told Mayor Johnson 'their sources said he was supposed to have filed a report on spending on illegal aliens in Chicago.' 'You were supposed to have filed a report on spending on illegal aliens on Chicago with the White House by now,' he asked. 'What has happened with that?' 'We don't have illegal aliens,' Johnson said. 'I don't know if that's from some sort of sci-fi message that you wish you've had.' 'Well listen, the legal term for my people were slaves. You want me to use that term too? So, look, let's just get the language right,' he added. He continued, 'We're talking about undocumented individuals that are human beings. 'The last thing I'm gonna do is accept the type of racist, nasty language, to describe human beings.' The Democratic mayor pivoted to his 'spendings on Chicagoans,' ensuring that he enabled a $16.7 billion budget into the city. 'We're investing in education, transportation, housing, youth employment, environmental justice, as well as ensuring we have safe communities,' he said. Johnson added that he's going to 'challenge the ultra wealthy' to make sure they 'pay their fair share.' After the press conference, Rep. Pramila Jayapal added to the blue city mayor's remarks, saying 'immigration violations are not criminal offenses.' 'It is very important that people in Illinois and across the country understand the immigration system is a civil system,' Jayapal said. 'Undocumented presence in the United States is not a criminal offense. And so thank you for the clarification on language.
